Statistical Tools for Nonlinear Regression, (Second Edition), presents methods for analyzing data using parametric nonlinear regression models. The new edition has been expanded to include binomial, multinomial and Poisson non-linear models. Using examples from experiments in agronomy and biochemistry, it shows how to apply these methods. It concentrates on presenting the methods in an intuitive way rather than developing the theoretical backgrounds.

The examples are analyzed with the free software nls2 updated to deal with the new models included in the second edition. The nls2 package is implemented in S-Plus and R. Its main advantages are to make the model building, estimation and validation tasks, easy to do. More precisely,

Complex models can be easily described using a symbolic syntax. The regression function as well as the variance function can be defined explicitly as functions of independent variables and of unknown parameters or they can be defined as the solution to a system of differential equations. Moreover, constraints on the parameters can easily be added to the model. It is thus possible to test nested hypotheses and to compare several data sets.

Several additional tools are included in the package for calculating confidence regions for functions of parameters or calibration intervals, using classical methodology or bootstrap. Some graphical tools are proposed for visualizing the fitted curves, the residuals, the confidence regions, and the numerical estimation procedure.

This book is aimed at scientists who are not familiar with statistical theory, but have a basic knowledge of statistical concepts. It includes methods based on classical nonlinear regression theory and more modern methods, such as bootstrap, which have proved effective in practice. The additional chapters of the second edition assume some practical experience in data analysis using generalized linear models. The book will be of interest both for practitioners as a guide and a reference book, and for students, as a tutorial book.

Sylvie Huet and Emmanuel Jolivet are senior researchers and Annie Bouvier is computing engineer at INRA, National Institute of Agronomical Research, France; Marie-Anne Poursat is associate professor of statistics at the University Paris XI.

Lean Leadership

To engage in meaningful change, leadership is not optional but a necessity. There are key elements of our behavior that move us beyond complacency for change and that leadership must be modeled. Continuous improvement and lean have much more to do with organizational cultures changing than simply making processes better. Jerry does a great job of laying out the important characteristics of lean leadership, while sharing valuable stories. If you're looking to engage change within your organization this is a very good read.

The Divine Prescence

The divine feminine, it is contained albeit on a quiet level in all three of the major monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, although they are male dominated. In the kabbalistic works of Jewish mysticism this is commonly known as the Shekina, or the divine presence. In gnostic Christianity it is known as Sophia, considered the Goddess of Wisdom. In Islam the Shekina is called Sakina.

THe book traces the very beginning of the feminine divine from the early pagan goddesses of the Middle East all the way to the development of Sophia the Wisdom Goddess. The Hebrew God had a wife. Jewish theology developed from strains of influence stemming from surrounding cultures like the Egyptians, Sumerians and Canaanites. In the Canaanite Pantheon, El , the head Canaanite God had a wife Ashera. In the Hebrew bible God's wife was also called , Ashera.

Ashera would later give way to the Wisdom Goddess. The wisdom Goddess drew from such influences as Isis, Inanna, Maat and Ashera. They were Goddesses who taught mankind wisdom. The Wisdom Goddess would later transform into the Shekhina. The Shekhina drew primarily from the Near Eastern Wisdom Goddess. Many symbol associated with the Shekina were the dove, light, Trees, incense smoke and the burning bush. The Shekina is mentioned several times in Kabbalistic literature. By the way the authors make excellent references to the Kabbalistic literature and Near Eastern Sources.

An examinatination of Jewish sources show that there are two Shekinas, an earthly and a heavenly one. The heavenly Shekina is wrapped around the male counterpart like a blanket of fire. The Earthly Shekina hovers in the earth and is the planets soul. It is the earhtly Shekina that is in exile with the Israelites.

Sophia, the Christian divine prescence drew heavily from Greek, Jewish and other Christian souces in her creation. There was a concept of Gaia ingreek theology that was likened to the soul of the world. The Sophia was often equated with the Holy Spirit, The Virgin Mary and sometimes even Jesus himself.

The divine feminine is considered the mother of angels and planetary forces. The Shekina's role in creation is amply explained in the final part of the book. This final part gives an excellent over view on Kabbalitic mytholgy. This is the first book I have read by Soritia d'Este and David Rankine and I must tell you that I am thoroughly blown away by this book. It is excellent and understandable. I defeinitely plan on reading mkre book by this team of scholars.

The book has excellent sources in their bibliography for further research.. Everything is well documented. They make comparison to other Goddesses and give great background and periphery information. This book get five stars out of five stars.

Shekinah

This is a must get title along with Sophia, godess of wisdom, Bride of Christ, On the Wings of Shekhnah. As a historian, one presumes we have no idea what the Shekinah glory as found in the Bible is. This show the lack of understanding of the modern man of the cloth when it comes to how the early church taught, what the early Jews believed. These three books shows a plethora, indeed a goldmine of information on this subject. It is modern mans lack of knowledge and personal bias that makes this topic hard to understand. I recommend you grab these three title and go back to how the early church and early Jews viewed this all important topic.

Beautifully written and well researched

Beautiful book, very well written. The only thing I missed was illustrations, when reading it I just googled for pictures of the statues and monuments mentioned in the book and I hope the writers will include them in their next print/issue. A book definitely worth reading! The vast knowledge of the authors of the material they discuss is brought in easy manner - but while reading you will not only get an understanding of the evolution of Sophia, but some interesting insights in kabalistic thinking as well.

A delightfully intricate tale

Once again Jeff Wheeler weaves a delightfully intricate tale, this time going earlier in the Kingfountain tales and filling in some action with characters who faded early in the first three books. The maid's war stands alone as well and, in the manner of Wheeler's prior books, I kept turning the pages, looking forward to the next surprise or fulfillment in the coming paragraph. Based on the life of Joan of Arc, with fantasy and magic mixed in, it's a great read from beginning to end.

Difficult to put down!

A great book that really pulls you in. It has characters with whom it's easy to sympathize and it evokes quite the range of emotions. I love that even in some dark situations there is always a bright ray of hope. I also love that although there is quite some violence (it IS a book about a war after all, as the title implies! ) that violence is not described in a glorifying or explicit way as some other authors do. This will likely still make it enjoyable for mature YA readers or people who have previously been traumatized by real-life violence.

Very interesting prequel to the Kings Fountain series which sets the stage nicely for the series. It will be interesting to see if the author writes more prequels or even perhaps writes sequels for the King Fountain series. It wraps them together nicely. Very good book, characters and interweaving of plots.

Risk hungry versus risk conscious

For someone like me, who uses the ISO 31000 standard extensively in my daily work, the main topic of Risk Appetite versus Risk Attitude in this book has brought a whole new perspective on risk and risk management to my attention. Basically, what the books states is that every company should ask themselves two questions: 1) How much risk do we want to take? That is risk appetite. 2) How much risk do we think we should take? That is risk attitude.

As the authors say, "so when we face a risky and important situation and we need to decide how much risk to take [...] we could just go with our gut, and make an intuitive decision [..] that might lead to a good outcome. But i might not. This is where is risk attitude comes in, allowing us to chose an appropriate positioning towards the risk." Risk appetite comes from the heart, or rather, gut, whereas risk attitude comes from the head. Simple as that.

In addition, there are four more risk terms and their respective questions:
Risk propensity: How much risk do we usually like to take?
Risk appetite: How much risk do we want to take?
Risk capacity: How much risk can we take?
Risk perception: How much risk do we think we are taking?
Risk attitude: How much risk do we think we should take?
Risk exposure: How much risk are we actually taking?

These risk terms or risk elements are brought together in what is called the RARA-model, RARA meaning risk appetite and risk attitude, constructing risk inputs and risk outputs.

At first glance the RARA-model appears unnecessarily complex, and the case examples, using every single element of the model, are very elaborated. However, what the model really is all about is answering the six questions above. I like this book, but it takes a while to sink in.
