A further four chapters discuss sea severity, extreme sea state, the directional wave energy spreading in random seas and special wave events such as wave breaking and group phenomena. Finally the stochastic properties of non-Gaussian waves are presented. Useful appendices and an extensive reference list are included. Examples of practical applications of the theories presented can be found throughout the text. This book will be suitable as a text for graduate students of naval, ocean and coastal engineering. It will also serve as a useful reference for research scientists and engineers working in this field.

Lots of hard-to-find information in one compact place.

In the first few chapters, this book provides ample references to foundation work by Phillips and Pierson, and then provides a detailed and robust presentation of a wide variety of different ocean spectra, with comparisons against plots of observed data. Previously I've had to search many different sources to find all of this information, and it's great to have it all in a compact, concise, consistent text.

If this text were digitized, it would be great to somehow have access to the actual measured data, such as that from the JONSWAP program, so that other statistical measures could be made.

A specific approach...

This guide might be good for people specifically trying to balance a diet with exercise for a specific weight-loss plan. The author gives some specific meal ideas, which is nice, but this book doesn't match up with the philosophy I was looking for, nor should it be considered a comprehensive "ultimate" guide. The author recommends protein powders and Splenda as a sugar substitute, so after that I honestly tossed this book (before finishing) because I was looking for basic nutritional information and a more holistic approach. If artificial sweeteners and processed supplements fit your lifestyle and you want a diet guide for weight-loss, you might enjoy this book. If your focus is holistic health, lifestyle and wellness, this book misses the mark.

Excellent....but if you own The Frugal Diet this is a repeat

I found the nutritional advice in Mr. Schiemer's book to be a breath of fresh air and very do-able! However, the information included in this book is expanded upon in his title "The Frugal Diet". In fact, I have to say that this title is an exerpt.

The Frugal Diet has this exact information, PLUS SOME! It also includes many more recipes that I think you are really going to enjoy.

One of the things I liked most about the advice given (on eating) is ...it takes into account that we are, in fact, living in 2011. We ARE NOT cavemen, and DO have to face the temptations of processed food every day.

Some may frown upon his limited use of artificial sweeteners or caffeine...but overall his approach is much more do-able than others that I have read. (and much healthier than the average American diet) Do yourself a favor and read his advice...either this title or The Frugal Diet!

Introduction

This book is an easy-to-follow and practical introduction to Ayurveda, the traditional natural healing system of India. Ayurveda is an ancient philosophy based on a deep understanding of eternal truths about the human body, mind and spirit, which is rapidly growing in popularity in the West. It offers us advice about how to keep ourselves healthy and to rebalance us when we become unwell. This book is ideal for anyone wanting to discover how Ayurveda can help them in their own life as well as for practitioners wishing to increase their healing repertoire.

The first part of this book, 'Understanding Ayurveda', defines Ayurveda and describes its history, placing it in the wider context of the development of medical philosophy in the East and its influence on that of medicine in the West. Ayurveda has survived through millennia until now largely as an unbroken tradition; two of its greatest values are its timelessness and its application to every facet of daily living today, just as it was relevant all those centuries ago. This book goes on to explain the philosophy and cosmology of Ayurveda, and explores its fundamental principles in detail. It describes and explains the basic tenets of Ayurvedic theory which are important to understand before you go on to consider treatment. It includes the five elements, the three doshas and their subtypes, the seven dhatus, the malas, the 20 attributes, and the srotas.

It explains how to assess your Ayurvedic constitution, the balance of your three doshas, and includes a questionnaire. It goes on to explain the vital role of Agni, the digestive fire, in health and the prevention of disease and explains how the six tastes of foods and herbs can be used as tools for prevention as well as treatment.

Part 3, 'Ayurvedic diagnosis and treatment', looks firstly at the causes and stages of disease from an Ayurvedic perspective, then at the art of diagnosis in all its forms, including tongue and pulse diagnosis. It explores the range of treatments you can use at home to balance the doshas and treat the dhatus, and the importance of detoxification to restore health to body and mind.

Lastly, part 4, 'Tools of Ayurvedic treatment', comprises a comprehensive directory of 50 of the most commonly used and available Ayurvedic herbs, followed by details of well-known Ayurvedic preparations and formulae. It describes Panchakarma, the deep and thorough detoxification practices of Ayurveda, and finishes with a discussion of Rasayana, the Ayurvedic science of rejuvenation.

I have used Ayurveda in my own practice as a herbalist for 20 years or so. As my knowledge of Ayurveda has increased I have found it an invaluable tool for helping myself and others understand how to prevent and treat health problems.

The Ayurvedic approach emphasizes the importance of addressing the roots of health and disease rather than the thousands of disease symptoms which arise from these roots. It is an approach that is simple without being simplistic and can be grasped by any of us wanting to maximize our healing potential through an understanding of ourselves and the universe around us.

Great book for beginners

This is my first book on Ayurveda and the description on amazon was right on for a beginner like me. I am familiar with Ayurveda but wanted to delve deeper. It's a great well rounded book on a expansive subject, but the writer does a stand up job describing the many facets of this ancient practice.

A rare treasure

For those of a deeply spiritual/mystical bent, this book is a rare treasure! It touches the heart, speaking of the priceless relationship between the Lover and the Beloved. At times the attempt to rhyme some lines seems a bit awkward, but this is a small problem and does remind the English-speaking reader that this material was originally Persian poetry and that it must be even more beautiful in the native language.

Gr 1-2–Tally McNally is obsessed with keeping score using tally marks. All day long the cat records who is the faster, smarter, smaller, taller, etc., and due to his sneaky ways, he wins every time. When Tom Cat declares himself the wettest during a rainstorm, Tally goes to extreme measures to prove he's even wetter and ends up in the sewer drain. Now his tallying comes in handy as he knows which cats to ask for help. In the end, all of his friends work together to pull him out, and Tally Cat ends his tallying ways. The final two pages feature an explanation of what tally marks are, how to use them, and how they are used by Tally Cat. This explanation could have been placed before the story for even better effect. The illustrations depict a bunch of street savvy, hip cats with great facial expressions. Andrew Harris makes the most of showing how much tallying Tally Cat does and gives readers ample opportunity to count the marks. Great extra touches include the classic cat "hang in there" motivational poster in the alley hangout. This is a fabulous story of a tallying alley cat, Tally McNally, who learned the value of counting on his friends!

Tally McNally was not only an alley cat, but he was also a "tally cat." Graffiti wasn't his thing, but a bit of tallying was. Of course he always had to come out on top and he tallied everything from the mice he caught to how many lives he'd used up. Kitty used up four, Boots had used up two, and Tally had used up eight. The bricks in his alley were covered with Tally's statistics because "He kept a tally all day long of who was right and who was wrong, / of who was tall and who was taller, / of who was small and who was smaller." He was "scratch, scratch, scritcy, scratch, scratch" not to be undone!

It wouldn't be long before Stripes, Kitty, Boots, and Tom Cat would get really aggravated with his constant one upmanship. It began to rain and all the cats tried to stay under cover. Raincoats, umbrellas, came out and even Kitty spread the pages of a cat magazine over her head to keep the rain from soaking her. Poor Tom Cat got totally drenched and as he threw himself into a ratty old chair, he complained, "I'm soaked to my skin. No cat is as wet." Well, naturally Tally McNally wasn't going to have any of that and poured a bottle of water over his head. "Ten drops for you and sixteen for me / means I'm the wettest. / You'll have to agree." Soon there was a challenge and Tom Cat threw himself into a puddle, but Tally McNally, not to be outdone, accidentally was washed into a drain. "Scratch, scratch, scritcy, scratch, scratch" . . . would anyone be able to save him?

This is a fabulous story of a tallying alley cat, Tally McNally, who learned the value of counting on his friends. I loved how this story easily incorporated the math concept of tallying and the value of friendship in this delightful tale. In the back of the book there is an explanation of tallying and what each line represents and how "we can keep track of more than one thing at a time." Many children don't like the fact that there always manages to be one in the crowd who feels they are better than everyone else, are smarter, and are always the best at everything. Tally is representative of that type of person, but the story very gently and tactfully shows him the error of his ways. The artwork? Well, "Scratch, scratch, scritcy, scratch, scratch," it would be mighty hard to top the adorable factor. This multifaceted book would be an excellent read and discuss book in the homeschool or classroom setting!

Math can be fun!

Trudy Harris did an excellent job to teach math in a fun way. I love the relation to multiple school subjects in one book. The back of the book gives great ways to teach kids how to tally, and there could be multiple extension activities you could use in a classroom or in your home. The illustrations are also very well done (by her son). What a great combination of two talented people from the same family.
I look forward to using this book in my own classroom one day when I am a teacher.

Super funny with a great lesson involved

I love this book! I want to be a teacher one day and I know that this is a great book to read to the class. It has so many different lessons: math, being the bigger person, and it's funny too. I read over a hundred books in my children's literature class and this was for sure one of my favorites. The illustrations are really enjoyable to look at too.

For those that like to learn instead of memorizing!

Widmann's isn't just page after page of lab tests with normal and abnormal values--I recommend Wallach's for that. Widmann's bridges the relevant physiology and pathophysiology over to the clinical tests. This allows me to understand the 'why' behind the numbers. It could use better graphics (I am a visual-oriented learner), and the references to the color plates within the text don't match up to the similarly numbered figures. This alone could cause other reviewers to drop the rating by a star or two. I still rate it 5 stars because it appeals to my sense of actually learning medicine rather than just rote memorization of facts and figures. In my opinion, this is crucial to success on the boards and wards and beyond. This book is recommended reading (along with "Daddy" Robbins) for my Hematology, Oncology and Immunology courses during med school (second year), though I look forward to using it for everything else down the road, including boards preparation, internship and residency.
