THE NEW TESTAMENT SCHOLAR LOOKS AT THE RESURRECTION AND RELATED DOCTRINES
By Steven H Propp
Merrill Chapin Tenney (1904-1985) was an American professor of New Testament and Greek, as well as the general editor of the Pictorial Bible Dictionary With Topical Index, and served on the original translation team for the New American Standard Bible.
He wrote in the Preface to this 1963 book, "The purpose of this book is not to defend a doctrine that is no longer tenable but to show that the resurrection has a direct bearing upon contemporary intellectual and spiritual tensions... The intent is... to present a cogent statement of the Biblical truth and to let the reader apply it for himself." (Pg. 8)
He notes, "If there was a continuity of revelation between the prophets of the Old Testament and the apostles of the New Testament, one might logically expect to find foreshadowings of this truth in the sacred writings of the previous age... The Pentateuchal law contains no clear reference to life beyond the grave either in the Decalogue or in the religious and civil ordinances that accompany it. There are occasional allusions to the unseen world of Sheol, but it is comparatively unimportant to the theology of Israel prior to the Exile. Two miracles of restoration to life were performed by Elijah and Elisha... they indicate that bodily restoration took place and was acknowledged under the Old Testament dispensation, so that the miraculous renewal of life cannot be excluded from consideration." (Pg. 25)
He adds, "Occasional references in the Apocrypha and the Pseudepigrapha of the inter-testamental period enable one to follow the progress of Jewish thought between the Testaments... The quotations reflect a firm belief in the bodily resurrection of the individual, yet they do not predicate it specially of the Messiah." (Pg. 26-27)
He states, "The value of the sermons [in Acts] has been challenged on the ground that ancient writers not infrequently put into the mouths of their characters speeches fabricated to fit the man and the occasion. Such procedure was not considered dishonest; it was a conventional device of historians. On the other hand, one cannot conclude that Luke manufactured the speeches simply because such procedure was customary. He had direct contact with many persons who had heard them, and, in the case of Paul, he could have obtained a digest from the speaker himself." (Pg. 48)
He suggests, "Eleven manifestations of Jesus are cited in the Gospels and Epistles as evidence for the resurrection. They differ widely in time, setting, persons involved, and results. They agree unanimously, however, that His physical presence was attested by competent witnesses, who were willing to stake their lives on the fact that He had risen." (Pg. 123-124) He admits, "The order of the Galilean appearances cannot be established easily." (Pg. 130) He adds, "Certain common elements characterize all of the appearances. No one of the Gospel writers has an artificial or stilted presentation of the return of Jesus from the dead. Their accounts contain no grotesque exaggeration of His powers, nor any acts of exhibitionism or vengeance. The short descriptions of His manifestations treat them as a normal part of His career, so that the ministry of the forty days is no more supernatural than the preceding three and one-half years." (Pg. 133)
Though fifty years old, this book may still interest some modern Christians studying the resurrection, or biblical accounts of the afterlife.
