I am very pleased with it

Received my copy today. (I do wish Amazon would label softcovered books as such so they aren't bent and shoved into mailboxes) So far, I am very pleased with it. Explanations are clear and concise. Lessons dive right in, so make sure you know your kana first. The vocab section can help you muddle through if needed, but you'll find it easier if you already know the kana. To help you, there is a handy and complete table in the early pages of the book.

Essential Japanese Kanji Vol 1 is complete in the sense that it doesn't require the use or purchase of other books. It provides tables of relevant information. The quizzes have the answers in the back. It even talks about the kanji radicals.

If you are an Anki user, there is plenty of information for you to populate a thorough deck for yourself from the contents.

One practical Kanji book

I like the way this book organizes its Kanjis into themes that you'll encounter in real life. Each chapter is laid out according to where you'll see them in everyday situations. For instance, one chapter dedicated to common Kanjis found in train stations, one to those found at the bank and on ATM machines, one to those found in hospitals, etc.

I think this book is for someone who has some grounds on using or seeing a few Kanjis before because the chapters are not arranged in order of difficulty as you'll see them in many other 'learning Kanji' books.

This book helps me reorganize those Kanjis I've probably learned or seen them somewhere before but somehow found it difficult to find an occasion to use each of them in real life. So buy this book if you're having the same problem like I was.

Looking forward to the revised edition of Vol.2

Organized to be effective

Just got my copy--but already I can tell it's systematic, clear, and useable at several levels. It finally explained to me the two "sound" systems--of Japanese and Chinese origins. It is geared to those trying to pass the (U.S.) College Board Advanced Placement test--with a set of exercises at the end of each unit that more beginning learners can ignore. My only complaint is that some of the writing is too small and too gray, especially for the many-stroke characters. Maybe not a problem if you're 15 years old. There are several short appendices: Japanese names, main radicals, kanji compounds. There is also an on-kun index and a vocabulary index ordered by the syllabary. I've just pre-ordered vol. 2, due out in Oct. 2016.

If your destination is honesty, you need a ROADMAP!

Working Actors make instinctual choices that are dead on, this is why they are working actors. Often these same actors in a teaching position lack the ability to articulate the process. Many don't posses a concrete vocabulary to share with their students that specifically describes what it is they do as a working Actor to bring about those dynamic, believable qualities for the Stage and Screen. This is the beauty of THE SCENE STUDY BOOK. Miller's text provides a clear and systematic approach to what is far too often an ephemeral art-form. Like any good map it shows the actor how to get to the desired destination, especially if that destination is the truth of a moment, a unit or a scene. There are many ways to get to this place (as we all know), but a good map is invaluable! This is especially true if you are going somewhere within the bounds of the human experience. I have been teaching Acting to Conservatory and Bachelor of Arts students at the undergraduate and graduate level for years and the "Roadmap To Success" should be in the backpack or hands of every would-be-actor in American.

Mr Miller has written a soup to nuts guide for the actor in training and on the job. This book details with clarity, simplicity, brevity, and humor the acting process involved in all aspects of scene study. Unlike the typical general guidelines given in most acting texts,The Scene Study Book guides the actor through the entire scene study process step by step. I highly recommend it!

Be prepared to roll your sleeves up and get to work. Bruce miller breaks down scene study in a way that helps the actor make clear choices based on what the script is telling them. This is not a "one time read" book but something to use as a manual to go back to often. My guess is that most people ordeing this book will have NEVER done the things in this book. I will also guess that if you use the ideas in this book to help make choices as an actor, you will be on the road to becoming the actor you know is inside you. Warning to the uninitiated. this book will have you do a lot of work to prepare a scene properly. If you want to "just wing it" when you pick up a script, this is NOT the book for you. But, if you are willing to do the work that the script demands, you will come out ahead and, I believe, a better actor. Have fun!

Excellent book! Details how local governments use drought money in India

This is an eye opening and profound book! You would be surprised how local governments in India are using drought money. In each of the books chapters the author tells a story (narrative) that sounds as entertaining as a novel because the author is such an excellent writer--about specific incidents in different prefectures of India where federal drought money was allocated. In each case the money was never spent or utilized in a manner that aided the actual drought survivors or the families of those who had perished.

The topic sounds sad. But the shenanigans that happen, as we see the route the money takes to get to the local people, are almost funny because of the way the author uses his skills with words and his use of the "understatement" to heighten the absurdity of the situation.

This book is very eye opening about the government in India. It almost reminds me of how ineffective the U.S. has been in its attempt to implement funds for natural disaster relief like with Katrina or others.

The book tells so much about the mentality of the people of India, their perseverance and strength and, in the end, their wisdom in dealing with the government.

Excellent read! Informative and, in a absurdist way, humorous.

Sainath's book provides vignettes of soul-destroying poverty and degradation in the poorest states in India. It is an attempt to correct the `event' approach which the majority of the media takes to India's ills, which tends to view India's problems simplistically as singular aberrations, rather than taking a broader `process' approach, which looks to less immediate causes. His writing is angry and passionate, but always clear.
What certainly comes through in Sainath's book is the incredible arrogance of much of the Indian administration. Save a few isolated cases, the examples of the arrogant official class are myriad - the official insistence that they know better than the very natives who had lived in an area for years; the mass sterilisation of perfectly good cattle, already adapted to the environment, in order to make way for a so-called "super cattle", which turns out to be useless; or the mass uprooting of millions of people to make way for useless dams, now brought to the attention of the West through the thankless activism of Arundhati Roy (the author of the God of Small Things). A consistent theme running through Sainath's reporting is a lack of honest and sincere consultation with the very people the `reforms' are supposed to help.
There are hopeful stories too - like the story of women's collectives. Sainath tells of how groups of women have gotten together and formed organised labour, and which do a better, more efficient work than the more `sophisticated' industries and companies. Indeed, industries come across as monopolies only interested in maintaining their corner of the market, and more than willing to resort to nasty tricks in order to maintain their dominance (for instance, creating rival groups to undermine the administration's trust in such organised groups, social ostracism, even physical abuse). Corrupt officials don't help these collectives' chances either - since the collectives' cheaper and more efficient labour threaten the kickbacks the officials get from the industries.
The Indian middle class are also chastised by Sainath. Like their Western counterparts, they require a diet of horror stories to grab their attention. Hence, stories are often reported as ahistorical events, rather than dealing honestly with the process which led to the `event' in question. More than this, the middle classes have become so numbed to the poverty of the majority, that they require exceptional suffering to warrant their time - thus, there are reports of `epidemics' and `droughts' which are often exaggerations or mistruths.
After a while, I felt myself becoming numbed by the stories. There were simply too many tales of woe. This isn't really a complaint about Sainath's reporting, but maybe more of a plea for longer, more detailed stories from him. But this is the nature of his book, which is essentially a compilation of newspaper articles. Although Sainath makes a plea in his book for a view of Indian poverty as process rather than event, sometimes I felt his stories were too short to support the process approach he himself advocates. Still, this should not stop any reader interested in India from reading this book. It is a shocking indictment of the India that should have been.
A standard criticism of works like Sainath's would be that it is merely critical, and doesn't provide any answers. How can one learn from the mistakes of one's predecessors? The impression I got from Sainath was that the best that could be done is more consultation, more historical awareness, more backup studies, more studies of the actual effects of the reform process itself on the environment and the people actually involved, and so on. It's not a particularly innovative conclusion, but it's probably realistic.

Of all the 25 years old books I've read lately this is the most topical

While I bought and read the paperback version of this book when it first came out this is a review of the preview Kindle edition published by Castila House. When a situation is bad enough people will be tempted to want to burn things down and start all over again. The "Let It Burn" caucus in this year's political season is just the latest example. This volume of the "There will be war" series illustrates why that would be an extremely bad idea. The stories are mostly of the post Armageddon sub-genre but as typical of the series there are all excellent stories without a single bad one in the lot. "Half the Battle" is probably the best short story that Harry Turtledove ever wrote. "The Contract" and "The Voice of the Cockroach" explore themes of just where duty lies when everything else is gone. A word of warning - Norman Spinrad's "Journals of the Plague Years" is not for younger readers. While the non-fiction is also good it is also dated. They frequently mention an organization known as "the Soviet Union" which readers under the age of 25 may remember as the bad guys from the last Indiana Jones movie. Nevertheless while he doesn't actually come out and say that the Soviets will collapse, it is amazing to read this 25 years later and see just how much Dr. Pounelle and his fellow contributors got right. As is typical of the series poetry is not neglected. The complete version of "Horatius at the Bridge" is in here. It doesn't really fit the post Armageddon theme but it is still a welcome addition. A great installment of one of the best science fiction anthology series ever.

Hope in a post-apocalyptic world

Another excellent anthology in the series.
What would life be like in a post-apocalyptic world? Well that depends. Here we have a collection of post-apocalyptic scenarios, ranging from survival after a nuclear war, invasion by the Soviets, an H-bomb testing gone wrong and rampant plague. What type of society will arise from the ashes of an apocalyptic event? The anthology explores the possibilities, ranging from Mad Max type roving gangs to aristocracy type societies where strongmen rules. What technology, medical knowledge, any knowledge will survive? These various stories explores the possibilities.
I am convinced survivalist (preppers) would like (and even benefit from) reading this particular volume. After reading this one cannot help but ask: how prepared am I really for survival?
The overall message though is one of hope, apocalypse van be averted, but if not some can survive. To quote from one of the stories, Collector's piece: "To men without hope there is no future and the present can be of little or no value."

Excellent Read

Vol. 9 is the first of the There will be War anthologies that I have read. Since the original anthology is over 25 years old, I was expecting some dated material. However, it’s been enlightening how well the material has held up over time. In Fear and Survival by Reginald Bretnor, he states that since we live in a cleaner, safer world, we forget how dangerous it can be. I think that is even more applicable today. We give no thought for food supply chain, utilities, etc. Any hiccup in food supply or disruption in utilities and we would quickly plunge into chaos. In my opinion, Jerry Pournelle has done a great job with vol. 9 and I look forward to catching up with the other volumes as well.

Helped me learn Perl quickly

Learned Perl quickly with this book.

I would do examples time to time. But most of the times, I looked it up when I got stuck.

It is a good learning tool for beginners and a nice reference for those who are good at Perl.

I suggest combing this book with a more traditional Perl programming book. It will create more synergy.

There's a 5th Edition, skip this one.

I'm disappointed by this book. At the beginning of Chapter 2, the book tells you that if you are new to programming then skip to Chapter 5. Hmmm... okay. So I finish Chapter 5 and I start to do the exercises at the end of the chapter when I notice that the examples are telling me to do things that weren't covered by Chapter 5 and I have no idea how to do. I flip back and double-check to confirm the book told me to skip to Chapter 5 and sure enough it does. Long story short, skipping to Chapter 5 is not correct, I should have only skipped Chapter 2 and not have skipped Chapters 2, 3, & 4 like it said to do. Okay fine, I go back and go through Chapters 3 & 4 and now I know how to do what the Chapter 5 Exercises are asking. At least I think I do, but I'm stuck on one part of one of the exercises and I need to look at the solution to the exercise on the cd that was included with the book for some help. I pop in the cd, browse the chapter folder and I only find the examples that are already written in the book. What I need is to see how the author solved the problem. That would give me a direction I could have gone to solve the problem myself but the solutions to the exercises are neither on the cd nor in the book itself. But not just that chapter, there are no solutions to any of the exercises at all. I checked the website, (informit.com/ph) and they're not there either, nor is there any errata but I know there most certainly is the massive error in Chapter 2 I spoke of earlier. I found another error in Chapter 5 in the explanation of one of the examples that said the value didn't exist in the hash when it clearly does. I'm only up to Chapter 5 so I can't imagine the errors that the remaining 15 chapter might have but I'm going to press on because I really want to learn perl and don't have the money to go buying more books. I can't recommend purchasing this one to anyone else though.

A book for newbie's, A reference for experts

After looking at a few Perl books, I chose Perl by Example as the text book for teaching a Perl class. Perl is a huge topic and while no one book can cover all the topics in the depth and details required for anyone's particular environment, the concepts were explained at sufficient levels providing one the terms and tools to investigate on the Web quickly for further study. The key component of this book that sold me was how the examples in the book were organized. The organization of the book provided the focus in the areas I needed. They provided all the material required for the class. For instance, when working through arrays, hashes and files all the information was at your finger tips. No bouncing around...it's all just right there.
