Relevant, Necessary, Comprehensive and Potentially Transformational

In today's connected, complex world, where the ability to cultivate and sustain trusting relationships with myriad stakeholders is vital to personal and organisational credibility, ethical leadership has never been more needed. Countless recent scandals are testament to the sad fact that the demand for such leadership has frequently been let down by its supply. From the exploitation of garment workers in Bangladesh to the underwhelming figures on employee engagement in most countries, there is a sense that we are frequently let down by those who lead us. And yet there are multitudes who want to collaborate well across increasingly global boundaries to address the numerous universal issues that threaten the stability and sustainability of our world. Linda has written this book for all of us who seek to make a positive difference in lives, organisations, communities, and the world.

One of the things that we have lacked is a clear, unambiguous and practical framework for agreeing on what is right, so that we can apply common principles and standards to our leadership adventure, contextualised appropriately to geography, industry and interest. This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to the theories, techniques and applications of image fusion. It is aimed at advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate students in electrical engineering and computer science. It should also be useful to practicing engineers who wish to learn the concepts of image fusion and use them in real-life applications.

The book is intended to be self-contained. No previous knowledge of image fusion is assumed, although some familiarity with elementary image processing and the basic tools of linear algebra is recommended. The book may also be used as a supplementary text for a course on advanced image processing.

Apart from two preliminary chapters, the book is divided into three parts. Part I deals with the conceptual theories and ideas which underlie image fusion. Particular emphasis is given to the concept of a common representational framework and includes detailed discussions on the techniques of image registration, radiometric calibration and semantic equivalence. Part II deals with a wide range of techniques and algorithms which are in common use in image fusion. Among the topics considered are: sub-space transformations, multi-resolution analysis, wavelets, ensemble learning, bagging, boosting, color spaces, image thresholding, Markov random fields, image similarity measures and the expectation-maximization algorithm. Together Parts I and II form an integrated and comprehensive overview of image fusion. Part III deals with applications. In it several real-life examples of image fusion are examined in detail, including panchromatic sharpening, ensemble color image segmentation and the Simultaneous Truth and Performance algorithm of Warfield et al.

The book is accompanied by a webpage from which supplementary material may be obtained. This includes support for course instructors and links to relevant matlab code.

If you're a woman with more money than you know what to do with, buy this book.

I learned about 3 useful websites from this book, so reading it wasn't a total waste. But I kept feeling that it was written for women who are already a lot better off than I am, yet novices at managing their own money.

How about this--"You might not be able to quit your job and still make your annual pilgrimage to Tuscany. The new BMW every two years might be out of the question initially." In a section about maintaining what you already own, she talks about having sprinkler systems repaired and having your treadmill serviced. She encourages us to join a gym, and go to a spa. Give me a break!

My husband and I haven't had a vacation in 10 years, and are driving 8- and 13-year old cars. Around here a gym is at least $360 a year, an impossibility for us and not necessary anyway when you can walk, and buy dumbbells and used exercise videos for a few dollars. Spend money at a spa when I can take a bubble bath? A sprinkler system to keep the crabgrass green? Good grief.

She talks about controlling your expenses by cutting down on emotional and impulsive spending, which for my husband and I is a paltry sum. But she doesn't say much at all about dealing with health care and insurance costs, which is a big worry for lots of people.

In other words, she just doesn't get my life and the lives of many Americans. Judging from what I *know* to be bad advice for someone like me, it makes me take the rest of the book with a grain of salt as well.

Who's the Target Audience?

I didn't find this book especially helpful. It seems the author could not decide who her target audience is: is it middle aged women who make $100K a year or 23 year old women making $25K? I also didn't think the financial advice was nearly as interesting or helpful as books written by finance professionals; the author is a therapist by training. It also seems that much of the advice is for women who are entirely passive, and I'm not sure most women fall into this category (I certainly do not.) Save your money.

What Kind of Girl Are You?

Am I an "ostrich" or an "abdicator?" That's the question I asked myself while reading Nice Girls Don't Get Rich! They are just two of the types of women with whom you may or may not identify who are in dire financial straits or, at the least, not reaching their financial potential for behaving like "nice girls."

Following each case scenario, coaching tips are offered to prevent or stop us from falling into female behavior traps that can be financially crippling. Each tip is in bulletpoint format making the information easily accessible for reference.

Dr. Frankel employs an easygoing, winning writing style to deliver hard-hitting strategies designed to knock women out of their financial complacency and dependency. The advice ranges from simply balancing a checkbook or weekly budgeting to setting up a private foundation.

If you've read Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office, this new book provides the tools necessary to build your wealth after you've attained that desired position. I highly recommend adding it to your "nice girls" collection.

While light and easy to read

Over coffee one morning, this book was listed on my Recommendations and it caught my attention. Before I left the kitchen table that morning, I had consumed both my breakfast and this book. Both the author's story and his message intrigued me enough that before I left the kitchen table I had also reached out to Mr. Carson with an invitation to meet. After juggling schedules over email, we found ourselves across the table at a typical, locally-owned coffee shop in South Lake Union across the street from the Amazon.com headquarters.

I am naturally suspicious and skeptical. My experience with self-help books and their authors is that both tend toward the superficial and cheerleading. Mel Carson is neither. When he speaks about his book and his work, you can feel the genuine passion and interest he has to use his talents to help others with personal branding. In spite of a vast expert knowledge on personal marketing and branding, and being a draw for audiences world-wide, he is humble. He is interested in the person he is helping. The voice you read in the words of this book are not a cover; they are the author - friendly, direct, and concerned about helping you be successful.

At 39 pages, this book (paper?) is truly an introduction to personal branding. While light and easy to read, it's value to you isn't in the number of pages or words that is has, but in the many self-examination and reflection exercises in it. At first glance these exercises will appear to be simple. You may feel that you do not need to take them serious or give them much thought. I strongly caution you against submitting to those feelings. Pull out a pen and paper, give yourself time and a place to contemplate, and do the exercises with earnest. What you put into the exercises that Mr. Carson has laid out is what you will get from them in reward.

This is only an introduction. This book will give you a good foundation upon which to build your personal brand, either alone or with the help of an expert. This book is worth reading and keeping with you as you begin your journey to strengthen your personal brand.

A great introduction to the topic of branding.

As an MBA student I have become more interested in the importance of my personal brand, but I have been overwhelmed with the sheer number of article, websites, and books available on the topic. On the recommendation of a friend on Facebook, I decided to give the book a try. I am glad I did.

After an initial read I have started to outline a plan of action to create a virtual presence that will help to guide my future on-line, and off-line, professional goals. A single reading is not enough. My plan is to go back and take a minimum of 10 days to reread it; reading one section each day and reflecting how I can implement that section, and how I can develop ways to ensure that I am working to positively develop my brand.

Who knew your personal brand meant so much? Mel did. He's the one who knew. And he's doing his best to save people from themselves and their silly mistakes. This is a super clean read with many concepts and strategies that just make sense, but that you'd never come up with on your own. While this might be a book every CEO should immediately absorb, it's also extremely helpful for whatever point you are in your career. Because your personal brand is being built constantly, whether you know it or not. So you might as well follow Mel's guide and get it right from the top.

I purchased this book mostly for the chapters on cleaning optical components. Some methods you may have heard of but never learned (e.g. the drag method and chalk method) are described in great detail, by people that actually use the methods on crazy-expensive optics. I learned a lot and what I learned worked well in my practice. There are also chapters on cleaning materials, packing optics, inspecting optics, and so on. There's sage advice throughout the book, e.g. you don't have to clean it at the first sign of a blemish, and which components are especially sensitive to cleanliness.

If you clean expensive optical components, get this book. You'll be able to clean even internal optical components without fear.
