A gripping page-turner

This first thriller/mystery from author Malcolm Richards really nails the genre. From an unlikely starting point, it will have you on the edge of your seat, unable to put it away until it reaches its climax. It has it all: A sympathetic and haunted protagonist, incredibly evil villains and a great deal of action and suspense. You know that book that follows you around a whole working day because you were forced to put it away as it was reaching its dark and twisted peak? This is one of those books. So, why just four stars? Well, It's not War and Peace, is it. But then, it was never meant to be, either. Two thumbs up!

Well crafted mystery

I really enjoyed Richards' first book, so I was really looking forward to this, and devoured it within a couple of days. It has a slightly different, more dynamic feel to it, than the The Hiding House had, but it still has the strong character work that I loved from that book. There are two mysteries on the go here, one a missing person that Emily is trying to find, and the other a much more personal one from her past. Both strands were very cleverly, and excitingly, unraveled and I'm left wanting more. I hope Volume 2 doesn't take too long!

Creepy mystery-- not exactly plausable, though.

I thought this book was well written, but the story was pretty far fetched. It tells the story of doctors run amok, experimenting on patients and a fragile vulnerable girl. who single handedly tries to expose the conspiracy. I did like the charter development and the depth of the main character and her neighbours, Despite the unlikely heroine, and her motivations for putting herself at risk, the story makes several excellent points about existing social issues. They include the tendency of people to turn away from domestic violence, rather than come to the aid of victims; the stigma that exists against those labelled as mentally ill and the systematic oppression of people who don't have a voice and the preying upon marginalized people by certain elements of society by both sanctioned and unsanctioned methods and groups. The book illustrates the power of lies and propaganda and the dark history of medicine and human experimentation. It's something to ponder and the book takes a rather grim, dim view of institutionalized care, particularly when consent and free will take a back seat. My main objection to the story was that the plots been done before... by many authors. Not exactly original.

John Carr’s life changed forever on Christmas 40 years ago, when he received a present from his father that is still giving to him today. There in the cool basement of his grandparents’ Chicago home, his father and uncles smoked cigars and told war stories. One hero stood out: Roger Bushell, the British fighter pilot who had successfully dug his way out of a German POW camp, overcoming great obstacles to escape the Nazi regime.

Roger Bushell’s heroism stayed with John as he grew up and watched “The Great Escape” movie and read books. But on Sept. 11, 2001, Bushell became more than an inspiration. It was a calling.

In “Serving With Roger Bushell,” new author Carr tales readers in vivid detail through two very different yet truly connected war stories. Carr takes you back into the 1930s and 1940s, telling the story of how Roger Bushell changed from hot-shot skiing playboy in Britain to a respected fighter pilot who spent much of World War 2 trying to regain his freedom. At the same time, Carr deftly weaves in his own war story:
•Compelled to act after the terrorist attacks on New York City, John Carr joins the U.S. Army
•After years of training, Carr is sent to Iraq as part of forces overseeing the post-Saddam Hussein transition
•Carr explains the war’s impact – really, its drain – on American soldiers, insurgents and Iraqi civilians

Just as he learned that Hollywood’s version of Bushell’s heroism was far from reality, Carr takes you through his stark realization about the war’s legacy. Yes, these troops had overcome an evil regime. But now, years later, casualties mounted and natives were as eager for Americans to leave as the troops themselves were OK with escaping endless sand and heat. What was all this for?

Carr’s memoir gives readers an inside look at the reality of war, beyond the battlefields. On one short visit from Iraq back to be with his then-fiancee in New York, Carr writes:

I looked down at pedestrians walking to work. Do they know how easy their civilian lives are? What if the city shuts off the water and electricity supply? Can they manage? Do I have anything in common with them? After Melissa got dressed and we walked through the lobby, I felt an urge to stop her because she wasn’t wearing any body armor over her doctor’s coat.

To say I liked this book is an understatement

To say I liked this book is an understatement. I have long heard about, read about, and admired Roger Bushell, but he never really came to life for me until I read this book. He became so real to me that I cried, despite knowing how the story would go, and his story lingered fresh in my mind long after I'd finished reading. Carr's ability to weave in his own story made it that much more powerful and current. I can't believe this is Carr's first book. He is an excellent writer and I highly recommend this book!

A compelling and beautifully written account of two men and the illusions and beliefs they carry with them to war. What is most admirable here is the author's determination to bring Bushell to life and to rescue his great escape from the enduring myth that Hollywood spun so shamefully. We realize now just what a spectacular failure that tunnel was and how each man who dug it, was actually digging his own grave, including RAF pilot Bushell who was the ringleader and the escape plan's greatest champion.
