Its owner had been plagued for the past two years by odd disappearances, manifestations of a shape-shifting entity the Ute Indians called a "skinwalker," floating blue orbs of light, cattle mutilations, a giant wolf that seemed unaffected by bullets, and a sinister, hyena-like creature. Biochemist Kelleher tells the story of the team's experiences on the ranch as "an ambitious if unconventional example of what science is supposed to do--explore the unknown." About the Author
Colm A. Kelleher, Ph.D., is a biochemist with a fifteen-year research career in cell and molecular biology. Following his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Dublin, Trinity College in 1983, Kelleher worked at the Ontario Cancer Institute, the Terry Fox Cancer Research Laboratory, and the National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine. For the past eight years he has worked as project manager and team leader at a private research institute, using forensic science methodology to unravel scientific anomalies.

George Knapp is Nevada's best-known journalist. For 20-plus years, he has served as anchor, chief investigative reporter, and commentator for KLAS TV, the CBS affiliate in Las Vegas. He is a six-time Emmy winner, has earned the AP's Mark Twain award for news writing seven times, and twice was given the Edward R. Murrow award for Investigative Reporting. His reporting on Nevada's infamous Area 51 military base was selected by UPI as Best Individual Achievement by a Reporter in 1989. He also writes an award-winning weekly column for a Las Vegas newspaper.

A few months ago, one of my favorite Podcast stations did a three part series regarding Skinwalker ranch. I was so intrigued by the saga, that when the hosts repeatedly referenced this book - I knew I had to read it.
The book exceeded expectation. Couldn't put it down. Regardless of ones personal level of skepticism on matters of the paranormal; it's written in such a way that you can scarcely stand living without an explanation. Perhaps that's what piques an interest in the paranormal for many.
The chronicle of events at the Utah ranch are retold with respect for accuracy, while using creative language and imagery. I read the entirety in two days, and felt an unexpected sadness when I'd finished it. Science may never be able to prove, conclusively, that anything "other worldly" took place here - but it's a riveting story nonetheless.

Thought-provoking

I'm glad I read this book and it has many fascinating scenes, but I'm only giving it 3 stars, rather than 4, because ultimately it provided no "answer" as the blurb seemed to promise it would. That may be an unfair rating and I could easily give it 4 stars, but there were also several anecdotes that left me hanging, with questions about what happened next that it seems the author could have followed up on further. Such as when the author mentions a related story in which a witness sees several UFOs land on a lawn and then leaves it at that without telling us what happened next. In the main story of the subject ranch there are also details mentioned that could have been fleshed out more for the reader, especially involving the poltergeist-like phenomenon abouthousehold objects being moved around.
The end of the book does include various hypotheses -- all very thought-provoking -- as to possible explanations, including the current belief by modern physicists that parallel universes actually exist.

More Than A Mere "Paranormal" Book

I liked 'The Hunt for the Skinwalker.'

The writing is solid and functional, with a simple narrative and format appropriate to a book of its type. Content-wise, the text is unexpectedly rich, as well as multidimensional. The description of the events at the Gorman ranch, and its subsequent study, is fascinating and substantial in itself, with enough interesting, first-hand information to comprise a book on its own. But 'Hunt' doesn't stop with a mere account, for from there the authors branch out into the implications and tentative conclusions of their observations, which expands the book's scope to the universal (and, perhaps, beyond, into the "supercosmic" space of multiple realities and universes). In these discourses, the authors demonstrate a superb and balanced logic, without erring into the biases and blindspots so common to such subject matter -- neither discounting the phenomena nor cheerleading it, as it were. I found the authors' perceptiveness and broad-yet-conservative thinking to be rather refreshing.

The book's finest and most valuable facet, however, is probably its most subtle: not the description of the fascinatingly traumatic events the Gormans experienced at their ranch, but the family's _reactions_ to them. That is, the book provides an account of what might happen when one is confronted with events and circumstances which they had previously rejected as impossible (or never imagined in the first place). In this, we can all learn a thing or two, more than can be taught by any purely academic or even philosophical treatment of such lofty incidents.

So, a big thank-you to the book's authors, subjects, and publisher. I have benefited from your work.

Divided by Serbia and Montenegro during the Balkan Wars, occupied by the Austrians during the First World War, the Sandzak was then incorporated into the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1918. The area was again occupied by Italian and German forces during the Second World War, during which internecine conflicts between competing domestic political forces intensified. Granted autonomous status by the communist-led Partisans in 1943, the Sandzak was again divided between Serbia and Montenegro in 1945. Yet this short period of autonomy remained a powerful symbol, and as Yugoslavia began to unravel in the 1990s, the 'Sandzak Question' re-emerged.
The Sandzak: A History attempts to demystify the enigma of this little-know part of the Balkans. About the Author

Kenneth Morrison is a Senior Lecturer in Modern European History at De Montfort University, Leicester, and a Visiting Senior Fellow at the London School of Economics (Research on Southeast Europe--LSEE) in 2011-12. He has written extensively on the history and politics of the Balkans and is the author of Montenegro: A Modern History (IB Tauris, 2009).

Elizabeth Roberts is a former diplomat and Balkan scholar who taught Southeast European history at universities in the Republic of Ireland and the United States. She is a recognised authority on Balkan history and is the author of The Realm of the Black Mountain: A History of Montenegro (Hurst & Co., 2007).

Absolutely worth it!

My parents are originally from Plav, Montenegro and now we live in New York City. They taught me basic history growing up, but it wasn't until I started to read this book that I learned so much. It is really interesting and it goes back all the way back from early civilization in the Sandzak to the present day. I was a little worried about the price but now that I've read it, it makes sense, there's so much information. If your looking to learn more about your roots like myself, or just want to learn about the accurate history of Sandzak, this is a must buy.

A must-read for lovers of Balkan History

I purchased a paper version of this book in a brick & mortar store. This is a very well-researched and well-written historical survey of one of the more mysterious parts of the Balkans, the Sandzak of Novi Pazar. Although only a tiny sliver of land straddling the border between today's Montenegro and Serbia, Sandzak played an out-sized role in the Great Power intrigues and power struggles of the second half of the 19th and first decade of the 20th centuries. Morrison and Roberts bring this region to life, as they offer up the first comprehensive overview of its history and often turbulent past. Having studied Sandzak intensively, and having spent much time there, I can highly recommend this book to any and all readers.

I am very pleased with it

Received my copy today. (I do wish Amazon would label softcovered books as such so they aren't bent and shoved into mailboxes) So far, I am very pleased with it. Explanations are clear and concise. Lessons dive right in, so make sure you know your kana first. The vocab section can help you muddle through if needed, but you'll find it easier if you already know the kana. To help you, there is a handy and complete table in the early pages of the book.

Essential Japanese Kanji Vol 1 is complete in the sense that it doesn't require the use or purchase of other books. It provides tables of relevant information. The quizzes have the answers in the back. It even talks about the kanji radicals.

If you are an Anki user, there is plenty of information for you to populate a thorough deck for yourself from the contents.

One practical Kanji book

I like the way this book organizes its Kanjis into themes that you'll encounter in real life. Each chapter is laid out according to where you'll see them in everyday situations. For instance, one chapter dedicated to common Kanjis found in train stations, one to those found at the bank and on ATM machines, one to those found in hospitals, etc.

I think this book is for someone who has some grounds on using or seeing a few Kanjis before because the chapters are not arranged in order of difficulty as you'll see them in many other 'learning Kanji' books.

This book helps me reorganize those Kanjis I've probably learned or seen them somewhere before but somehow found it difficult to find an occasion to use each of them in real life. So buy this book if you're having the same problem like I was.

Looking forward to the revised edition of Vol.2

Organized to be effective

Just got my copy--but already I can tell it's systematic, clear, and useable at several levels. It finally explained to me the two "sound" systems--of Japanese and Chinese origins. It is geared to those trying to pass the (U.S.) College Board Advanced Placement test--with a set of exercises at the end of each unit that more beginning learners can ignore. My only complaint is that some of the writing is too small and too gray, especially for the many-stroke characters. Maybe not a problem if you're 15 years old. There are several short appendices: Japanese names, main radicals, kanji compounds. There is also an on-kun index and a vocabulary index ordered by the syllabary. I've just pre-ordered vol. 2, due out in Oct. 2016.

If your destination is honesty, you need a ROADMAP!

Working Actors make instinctual choices that are dead on, this is why they are working actors. Often these same actors in a teaching position lack the ability to articulate the process. Many don't posses a concrete vocabulary to share with their students that specifically describes what it is they do as a working Actor to bring about those dynamic, believable qualities for the Stage and Screen. This is the beauty of THE SCENE STUDY BOOK. Miller's text provides a clear and systematic approach to what is far too often an ephemeral art-form. Like any good map it shows the actor how to get to the desired destination, especially if that destination is the truth of a moment, a unit or a scene. There are many ways to get to this place (as we all know), but a good map is invaluable! This is especially true if you are going somewhere within the bounds of the human experience. I have been teaching Acting to Conservatory and Bachelor of Arts students at the undergraduate and graduate level for years and the "Roadmap To Success" should be in the backpack or hands of every would-be-actor in American.

This book details with clarity, simplicity, brevity, and humor the acting process involved in all aspects of scene study. Unlike the typical general guidelines given in most acting texts,The Scene Study Book guides the actor through the entire scene study process step by step. I highly recommend it!

Awesome information!

Be prepared to roll your sleeves up and get to work. Bruce miller breaks down scene study in a way that helps the actor make clear choices based on what the script is telling them. This is not a "one time read" book but something to use as a manual to go back to often. My guess is that most people ordeing this book will have NEVER done the things in this book. I will also guess that if you use the ideas in this book to help make choices as an actor, you will be on the road to becoming the actor you know is inside you. Warning to the uninitiated. this book will have you do a lot of work to prepare a scene properly. If you want to "just wing it" when you pick up a script, this is NOT the book for you. But, if you are willing to do the work that the script demands, you will come out ahead and, I believe, a better actor. Have fun!

Excellent book! Details how local governments use drought money in India

This is an eye opening and profound book! You would be surprised how local governments in India are using drought money. In each of the books chapters the author tells a story (narrative) that sounds as entertaining as a novel because the author is such an excellent writer--about specific incidents in different prefectures of India where federal drought money was allocated. In each case the money was never spent or utilized in a manner that aided the actual drought survivors or the families of those who had perished.

The topic sounds sad. But the shenanigans that happen, as we see the route the money takes to get to the local people, are almost funny because of the way the author uses his skills with words and his use of the "understatement" to heighten the absurdity of the situation.

This book is very eye opening about the government in India. It almost reminds me of how ineffective the U.S. has been in its attempt to implement funds for natural disaster relief like with Katrina or others.

The book tells so much about the mentality of the people of India, their perseverance and strength and, in the end, their wisdom in dealing with the government.

Excellent read! Informative and, in a absurdist way, humorous.

Open your eyes to rural India

Even though it is based on the events that happened in the last decade, This is the best that I could get to understand the reality of the rural india based on the experience of someone who is not part of the rural India. It made me realize there is so much to do...

Sainath's book provides vignettes of soul-destroying poverty and degradation in the poorest states in India. It is an attempt to correct the `event' approach which the majority of the media takes to India's ills, which tends to view India's problems simplistically as singular aberrations, rather than taking a broader `process' approach, which looks to less immediate causes. His writing is angry and passionate, but always clear.
What certainly comes through in Sainath's book is the incredible arrogance of much of the Indian administration. Save a few isolated cases, the examples of the arrogant official class are myriad - the official insistence that they know better than the very natives who had lived in an area for years; the mass sterilisation of perfectly good cattle, already adapted to the environment, in order to make way for a so-called "super cattle", which turns out to be useless; or the mass uprooting of millions of people to make way for useless dams, now brought to the attention of the West through the thankless activism of Arundhati Roy (the author of the God of Small Things). A consistent theme running through Sainath's reporting is a lack of honest and sincere consultation with the very people the `reforms' are supposed to help.
There are hopeful stories too - like the story of women's collectives. Sainath tells of how groups of women have gotten together and formed organised labour, and which do a better, more efficient work than the more `sophisticated' industries and companies. Indeed, industries come across as monopolies only interested in maintaining their corner of the market, and more than willing to resort to nasty tricks in order to maintain their dominance (for instance, creating rival groups to undermine the administration's trust in such organised groups, social ostracism, even physical abuse). Corrupt officials don't help these collectives' chances either - since the collectives' cheaper and more efficient labour threaten the kickbacks the officials get from the industries.
The Indian middle class are also chastised by Sainath. Like their Western counterparts, they require a diet of horror stories to grab their attention. Hence, stories are often reported as ahistorical events, rather than dealing honestly with the process which led to the `event' in question. More than this, the middle classes have become so numbed to the poverty of the majority, that they require exceptional suffering to warrant their time - thus, there are reports of `epidemics' and `droughts' which are often exaggerations or mistruths.
After a while, I felt myself becoming numbed by the stories. There were simply too many tales of woe. This isn't really a complaint about Sainath's reporting, but maybe more of a plea for longer, more detailed stories from him. But this is the nature of his book, which is essentially a compilation of newspaper articles. Although Sainath makes a plea in his book for a view of Indian poverty as process rather than event, sometimes I felt his stories were too short to support the process approach he himself advocates. Still, this should not stop any reader interested in India from reading this book. It is a shocking indictment of the India that should have been.
A standard criticism of works like Sainath's would be that it is merely critical, and doesn't provide any answers. How can one learn from the mistakes of one's predecessors? The impression I got from Sainath was that the best that could be done is more consultation, more historical awareness, more backup studies, more studies of the actual effects of the reform process itself on the environment and the people actually involved, and so on. It's not a particularly innovative conclusion, but it's probably realistic.
