About the Author
C. Clifton Black (Ph.D., Duke University) is Otto A. Piper Professor of Biblical Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary. He is associate editor of The Catholic Biblical Quarterly and Horizons in Biblical Theology and a series editor for The New Testament Library. Black's books include The Eighth Day of Creation: An Anthology of Christian Scripture (2008), Anatomy of the New Testament (2006), and The Rhetoric of the Gospel: Theological Artistry in the Gospels and Acts (2001).

Duane F. Watson (Ph.D. Duke University) is Professor of New Testament Studies at Malone College. His most recent titles include The Rhetoric of the New Testament: A Bibliographic Survey (2006), Fabrics of Discourse: Essays in Honor of Vernon K. Robbins (2003), and The History of Biblical Interpretation, Volume 1: The Ancient Period (2003).

Not exactly a thriller, but very interesting for the engaged reader of the New Testament

This book is part of the series, Studies in Rhetoric and Religion (volume 8) and consists of 11 relatively short chapters written by scholars using rhetorical analysis in the study of the New Testament. Each chapter is extensively endnoted, at the end of the book there is a final bibliography of 30 pages which is preceded by an 11 page Curriculum Vitae of George Kennedy, then an index of primary sources followed by a subject index (18 pages of indices). In other words, academic paraphernalia (62 pages at the end, excluding endnotes) takes up a good chunk of this 255 page book.

The essays are concerned with the influence of Kennedy's proposal for employing Rhetorical Analysis from classical models in New Testament interpretation. In general the essays tend to summarize their topics, more to whet the appetite for what one might glean from a more detailed rhetorical analysis of specific texts. There is also be a bit of repetition in the "kind words" scholars typically make when assessing another scholar's particular work. Interestingly, the final essay, an Afterword, written by Kennedy himself, I liked the least of all the essays because he made too many assessments of various religious traditions relative to his experience with them, that I found to be (rhetorically) off putting or left me wondering why he had to say this. None the less, the book is a pretty good survey of the impact of Kennedy's appeal to use rhetorical analysis in New Testament criticism and interpretation.

Bethany Valachi, PT, MS, CEAS is recognized as a leading dental ergonomic expert. She is a physical therapist, dental ergonomic consultant and President of Posturedontics®, a company that provides research-based dental ergonomic education. Clinical instructor of ergonomics at OHSU School of Dentistry in Portland, Oregon, Bethany has provided expertise on dental ergonomics to numerous practicing clinicians and schools, including faculty training at NYU College of Dentistry. She is a member of the National Speakers Association, and lectures internationally at dental meetings, schools, associations and study clubs. She is ergonomic columnist for Dental Economics journal, and has been published in many peer-reviewed dental journals, including the Journal of the American Dental Association, Contemporary Oral Hygiene, Australian Dental Practice and others. David Brill, an established magazine writer, directs a communciations office for a University of Tennessee research center and teaches journalism there. He is also the author of "A Separate Place" (2000). Brill and his dog, Benton, live in a frame cabin in rural Tennessee.

A Nostalgic Journey on the AT

Unlike most AT books, this is not a chronological narrative. Its chapters are thematic, each creating an impressionistic image of some aspect of the trail. It was written by a young man who wanted to be a writer, and that is exactly how it reads. Written in the 1970s, it will remind some readers of the book A Walk Across America by Peter Jenkins, who set out on a hike during the same period searching for the same things. Although dated in many respects, AT hikers will recognize some things that never change such as the eternal battle between mice and those who try to sleep in their shelters. The last few short chapters are about the author's return to the trail many years later, and the overall tone of the book is nostalgic as he reflects on the greatest adventure of his life, and then seeks to recapture some of it once more.

A Young Man's Journey To Adulthood On the Appalachian Trail

David Brill's "As Far As The Eye Can See" is about the author's late-70s Appalachian Trail thru-hike. I've read numerous books by other authors who have done the same thing, but this one is one of the best.

Brill was a recent college graduate in 1979, and like many of us who grew up during that time, he wasn't sure who he was or what he wanted to do with his life. On a whim he decided to hike the entire Appalachian trail. He wasn't an experienced hiker or camper when he started out, but we see him grow from fear of the unknown in the dark woods of Georgia to a seasoned outdoorsman by the time he scaled Katahdin in Maine. He paints a vivid picture of the blisters and thunderstorms, mountains and rivers, and animals and people he met on the trail. But Brill takes his book a layer or two deeper than the average trail diary.

The book is written more as a collection of essays than a daily journal. While the skipping around between before-hike, during-hike and after-hike stories take some getting used to, the overall picture is one of a sensitive and kind young man who found that he feels most at home in nature. I especially appreciated that he spent time getting to know people with different backgrounds and beliefs before judging them.

This is one of the more upbeat books written by a thru-hiker. He doesn't gloss over the rainy nights, stinky bodies in the shelters, the muscle strains or the mosquitoes. But his wonder and enjoyment give the entire book an optimistic feel.

This is a wonderful book and will appeal to anyone who loves the outdoors or who has dreamed of hiking the AT.

As Far as the Eye Can See is Literature that the Eye Can Enjoy

I read this book every year or two, usually after returning from an AT section hike (I've done 300 miles). It's my favorite AT book for many reasons. First, Brill hiked the AT in its infancy as a thru hiking destination. Second, the book is organized by subject matter rather than as a chronological list of details. Third, and perhaps most important, the writing is brilliant and the book is actually literature of the finest sort. Just read his description of the seasons, especially the part about watching the line of new spring foliage creeping up the mountains each day.

This is an excellent guide. It explores many hidden aspects of a Navy Seal’s life. It talks about the dangers that people in this career gross while trying to stay active and be with their family subsequently. Self discipline is key

I have fallen in love with the Navy Seal and everything about them. The book has given us a wide elaboration of Navy Seal and how they undertake their training to be. For sure their training is worth emulating and adopting as at the end you gain self confidence and control. It makes you to be ready to face life just as it comes with a lot of surrounding awareness.

Since its original appearance in 1977, Advanced Organic Chemistry has maintained its place as the premier textbook in the field, offering broad coverage of the structure, reactivity and synthesis of organic compounds. As in the earlier editions, the text contains extensive references to both the primary and review literature and provides examples of data and reactions that illustrate and document the generalizations. While the text assumes completion of an introductory course in organic chemistry, it reviews the fundamental concepts for each topic that is discussed.

The two-part fifth edition has been substantially revised and reorganized for greater clarity. Part A begins with the fundamental concepts of structure and stereochemistry, and the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of reactivity. Major reaction types covered include nucleophilic substitution, addition reactions, carbanion and carbonyl chemistry, aromatic substitution, pericyclic reactions, radical reactions, and photochemistry.

Among the changes:

• Coverage of the importance of computational chemistry in modern organic chemistry, including applications to many specific reactions.
• Expanded coverage of stereoselectivity and enantioselectivity, including discussion of several examples of enantioselective reagents and catalysts
• Chapter 10, Concerted Pericyclic Reactions, has been reorganized and now begins with cycloaddition reactions.
• The treatment of photochemical reactions has been extensively updated to reflect both experimental and computational studies of the transient intermediates involved in photochemical reactions.
• A companion Web site provides digital models for study of structure, reaction and selectivity. Here students can view and manipulate computational models of reaction paths. These sites also provide exercises based on detailed study of the computational models.
• Several chapters in Part A conclude with Topics – short excursions into specific topics such as more detailed analysis of polar substituent effects, efforts to formulate substituent effects in terms of density functional theory, or the role of carbocations in petroleum refining

An extremely useful text for courses involving organic chemistry at graduate level and an excellent reference text, it is much better than many other similar texts on the market. Probably most useful for the study of physical organic chemistry and studying for cumulative exams in the graduate chemistry program. This is probably the only such text you would need for mechanism determination problems. This text also has many example problems to work through which chemistry students would find the most useful.
