Set on a West Indian Island, Force Ripe portrays the story of Lee, a little girl growing up in a northern village in the 1970s, when it was normal for children to be left with grandparents while parents went abroad to work and send money home. She is subsequently rescued when the Rastafarian commune is disbanded by the People’s Revolutionary Army-(PRA), and struggles to bury her secret past.

Cindy McKenzie was born and raised in Grenada. She was fortunate to grow up in a village where the road was her playground and doors were never locked. Thought provoking and challenging

An excellent read depicting life growing up in rural Grenada. It is written in dialect - both the narration and the dialogue which can be challenging to read at times for a non Grenadian, but it is readable. There is a glossary of local terms in the back which helps with unusual words. It is an eye opener for those of us from the West, who look upon Grenada as an idyllic paradise. We learn about the people and the hardships and struggles endured in every day life. Well worth the read if you are looking for a read which is different, thought-provoking and challenging.

What an unforgetable journey!

Cindy McKenzie’s novel, Force Ripe, is a literary gift to Grenada, an inspiration to children, and a powerful lesson to parents everywhere. This novel touched my soul. Its magic is in the simple but profound observations of Lee, a young girl facing the challenges and dangers of a harsh existence that no child deserves. It’s an unforgettable journey of abandonment, betrayal, and painful secrets. Yet, she prevails, giving testimony to the resilience and strength of the human spirit. When I turned the last page, I wanted to meet her, to hear her voice, and experience her strength. The story rings so true, the details so vivid, I know Lee is out there somewhere. When you read this book, you will have the same experience too.

A very touching journey.

Well worth the read.... the author truly described the hardship and abuse (physical & mental) some children went through by the hands of their caregivers even their own family. It was heart wrenching go through the journey of the young life of the author with her as she told the story. I'm so thankful I have not been through what she has described. I truly respect this young woman for the strong and graceful person she is today. Kudos to a true nubian princess.

Drakulic (How We Survived Communism and Even Laughed) notes that Eastern Europeans are so anxious to become like their Western counterparts that every city and town has a Cafe Europa that is a pale imitation of similar establishments in Paris and Rome. She presents here a collection of essays that explore life in various Eastern European countries since the fall of communism. As a citizen of Croatia (formerly a part of Yugoslavia) living now in Vienna with her Swedish husband, she writes knowingly as a survivor of a communist regime, as one who realizes that pitfalls still lie ahead for nations emerging from the Soviet yoke. In Albania, she observes rage everywhere in people who seem to want to smash all vestiges of the Hoxha regime. In Romania, she comments on the execrable state in which public toilets are maintained: "[T]he standard of Romanian toilets reflects the nature of the communist system of which it is a legacy"; "the absence of any improvement is... a warning for the future of democracy" there. Drakuli'c '(How We Survived Communism and Even Laughed, LJ 3/15/93) has a rare reporting talent. She observes country soil rising from beneath urban asphalt, and she knows how to explain to urbane reader the passions and desires of a marginalized Eastern culture. The specter of an international European community may be a mundane sidebar in Western newspapers, but for Drakuli'c it represents far more. Diapers, royalty, Bucharest toilets, and presumptuous cafes serve as apocryphal symbols in her collection of political essays. To the daughter of an antifascist hero, the West represents the realization that money can transcend the future and that there is more to life than the "living in the present" that communism offered. Rather than using the language of traditional economic and political analysis, Drakuli'c offers the language of everyday life to describe a momentous cultural evolution. This important book from a very talented European writer is highly recommended.

Much like Vladimir Nabokov's observations of kitschy American materialism in his novel Lolita, Croatian journalist and novelist Drakulic is similarly amused at Eastern Europe's bizarre embrace of capitalism. Almost every city has a Viennese-style "Cafe Europa." Any tiny food shop is a "supermarket." A Western name means everything, such as the "Point West boutique" selling jeans. Drakulic's chronicles of her travels throughout Eastern Europe are pockmarked by similarly absurd observations, all of which underscore the desperation of the recent Communist past. In Bucharest, prosperity is defined by a bathroom with toilet paper. In Albania, an entire nation lives vicariously through television, craving the material goods they see on Italian broadcasts. Elsewhere, corruption flourishes, as everyone lives for the present, fearful of the future and a return to Communism. Above all, Drakulic herself deplores the destruction of the Communist past. Beyond material deprivation, she laments Eastern Europe's lack of national identities, where history is recycled, ending on the whim of the ruling regime. Ted Leventhal

interesting, very well-written, slightly outdated

This book is about the 1990's in Eastern Europe, especially in the Balkans. It seems slightly outdated, but it is so well written that it definitely kept me going. It reads very fast. The book gets better and better as you go on. Some of the very pessimistic prophecies of the author were wrong, but many of her observations and thoughts seem to be very accurate and straight to the point. The relationship with her own country is very troubled and most of the Non-Croat readers, without any deeper insight into regional politics, will not be able to fully understand her point of view. Whether she is right or wrong, she always writes well. Most of the time she is very pessimistic. The book is actually completely soaked in sadness. There is in it no sign of excitement about freedom, democracy or free market economy...Instead, there is a strong conviction that the peoples of Eastern Europe are not mature enough to benefit from and build on any of these. I personally don't agree; the results of the systemic changes in the region have been mixed, with some extremely successful and some extremely disappointing and troubling cases. In fact, the 1990's were the last decade when the region could be still discussed as one item. Today, these are all very different countries.

Drakulic Again Considers Everyday Life in Eastern Europe

Drakulic delivers another series of short essays, in the style of her earlier "How We Survived Communism". In "Caf� Europa", the reader is carried from Croatia across western Europe during the few short years since Croatia emerged from war as an independent state, caught somewhere between its Balkan history and its European ambitions. She ruminates on subjects as far afield as her distaste for the word "we" because of its communist overtones, which leads to the verdict that the western concept of "I", of self-reliance and modernity in a civil state, is a notion still to be embraced in eastern Europe. It is for precisely the same reason that she admires Americans their fetish for perfect teeth, because they represent self-respect and independence from shoddy state-sponsored dental care.
Many of the essays in the book deal with the peculiar talent in eastern Europe for hiding and forgetting the past, thereby evading responsibility and missing the opportunity to learn from it. This flair for forgetfulness causes Drakulic's mother to fear for the sanctity of her husband's grave, marked by a communist star vulnerable to those who would destroy symbols of forty years of communism. It is this same talent that allows fascist "Ustasha" symbols from the 1940s to be revived in the 1990s under the guise of nationalism. The same phenomenon that impels each generation of politicians to rename streets and plazas in order to avoid any public recognition of historical figures whose views place them, at least temporarily, on the wrong side of today's political fences. It is this same failure of history that forces a Croatian journalist to mince words and ask facile questions during an exclusive interview with Dinko Sakic, the notorious concentration camp commander.
Drakulic is a bit exasperated when, on a visit to Israel, she is barraged with questions about Croatia's fascist role during World War II. "To grow up under communism means to live forever in the present. Once the final social order had been established, there was no need to look backwards - or forwards, for that matter.... Perhaps this is the reason why we are now, with this recent war, sentenced to live in the past. Sometimes I ask myself whether this is the punishment for our lack of interest in history, for our fear, silence and irresponsibility towards ourselves. For our ingnorance." She realizes that Croatia as a society has failed to examine and integrate the lessons of its fascist period, and this failure, this willful forgetfulness, is itself a type of evil complicity perpetually spawning new crises, including the high-tension ethnic conflicts that yielded the 1991-1995 wars.
The only jarring note is the essay titled "Why I Never Visited Moscow", in which Drakulic bemoans the fact that she has been categorized as an eastern European writer. This seems a bit hypocritical given that all of "Caf� Europa" including the very cover blurbs, much like her previous books, is premised on the fact that she is a particularly talented eastern European writer and astute social critic who has interesting and insightful things to say about the region. Perhaps Drakulic, who has won awards, fame, and money with her admirable accounts of eastern Europe, is being a bit self-righteous when she complains about being viewed as an eastern European writer.

This book may be a nineties look at how things will turn out in Europe, so some may say it's out of date, but its perspective on history makes it that much more valid. Drakulic's experience doesn't change, what happened to the East doesn't change. This book is a brilliant, detail-oriented look at how Europe was before and after the Soviet Union, and I want to read everything else she's written. Love it.

I have seen other artists use programs such as Manga Studio, Corel Painter, and Adobe Illustrator to draw their comics. These are all fine choices, but Adobe Photoshop is the primary program I use when digitally illustrating comic books, and it's the program I use in this book. Although I go in-depth in this book about how to create comics digitally, this is not a how-to or step-by-step book on the fundamentals of Adobe Photoshop itself. Instead, this book is targeted at intermediate to advanced users of Photoshop, so if you are unfamiliar with it or any other computer programs I refer to, I highly recommend that you look on line for in-depth tutorials, purchase one of the many books on the subject, or even take an introductory course in using Photoshop.

So Much Better Than I Could Have Expected...

I was excited when I first learned about this book coming out because it's difficult for me to set up a normal artist's station in my house. Not knowing who this Freddie Williams guy was, I ended up going to his website and checking him out. It was here that I first became dismayed.

His website has a section labeled "DigiArt Quick Tools," in which one can find several Photoshop tools Freddie has available. These include several variations of his MasterPage file, which tend to cost a little bit of money (the bundle pack that gives you all the Master Pages runs I think about $125). I also noticed a blurb in which Freddie mentions that an entire section of the upcoming book is devoted to the Master Page. I immediately started thinking that the book was going to end up being a $15 commercial for the various tools he has to offer.

Never have I been so glad to be so dead wrong.

The section on Master Pages walks you through the process of making your own Master Page, and while he mentions his website, he never tells the reader to go buy anything. Instead, he teaches you how to do it yourself. In fact, there's only one thing that Freddie tells the reader to download, and that's the perspective tool that he created... and its free (as is a generic version of the Master Page, if you don't want to make your own or pay money for a company-specific Page).

As far as the rest of the book goes, it was a massive wake-up call in regards to realizing how powerful and how fast creating sequential artwork on the computer is. In fact, it seems that Freddie's main goal is to get the reader to create better artwork, faster, and he constantly discusses ways to make your work faster and more streamlined.

Be warned, though... this is NOT a "how to draw" book. If you don't know how to draw, this book won't be that helpful to you. This book is more accurately described as a "how to use the computer to draw" book. Additionally, if you don't know how to do any basic drawing in Photoshop, you might want to learn, quick. I have a very basic understanding of how to draw and paint with Photoshop, and this book has my mind racing with all the possibilities I have available to me now. Be prepared to think and imagine when you read the book.

Not every aspect of Freddie's work method will work for everyone, and he acknowledges fact. He describes his methods to the reader, and for key areas offers alternative paths for the reader to take that may be more comfortable for the reader.

Did I enjoy this book? Yes, I did. Did I learn anything from this book? Almost every step of the way. Would I recommend this book to the serious hobbyist or the artist getting into the comics field? Without a doubt and with no reservations, yes!!!!

I've grown up reading how-to books for comics since the age old "How To Draw Comics the Marvel Way"-- whichas a twelve year old, blew my mind. "Understanding Comics" by Scott McCloud brought the unique concepts behind comics to the forefront, and as I prepared to launch my professional career in comics, it helped give me a set of mental tools to focus on storytelling that I still use to this day. But Freddie E Williams II has written and illustrated The DC Comics Guide to Digitally Drawing Comics as a book that focuses on the draftsmanship and technical tools that will help define comics through the 21st century.

Written in a friendly, easy-to-understand style, Mr. Williams leaves the basic discussions on HOW TO DRAW, and assumes the reader already has enough books on that. This book really focuses on creating comics in either a completely digital way, or (addressing most traditional artists' fears) creating comics as a hybrid between the computer and the hand drawn comics in a variety of ways that can cater to one's strengths. I have always been a writer/penciller, and can only describe my own inking as though I inked with a chocolate bar instead of a brush. When I picked up the book, I immediately went to the Inking section, and immediately found the methods to be completely within my technical abilities in Photoshop (a must have, along with a wacom or cintiq tablet for the methods described). And while I have over 15 years experience with Photoshop, Williams really makes this a doable thing for anyone who takes the time to learn just a few of the tools in Photoshop.

Other topics that surprised me for their ease and flexibility include the sections on creating backgrounds, working from a library of art for warping to fit perspective and placement, and other items that caused a few "Why didn't I think of that?" moments.

Whether you draw funny animals, super heroes, or manga, I highly recommend this book to anyone that is ready to delve into the process of creating comics in what can ultimately be a more efficient, flexible, and ultimately more creative way.

Very useful, if a bit one-sided

As someone who's been creating comics digitally for a few years now, I'm always curious to see how my peers do it. It's nice to have means of comparison and new reference.

Freddie's DC Comics-endorsed book presumes a few things: 1. That you have a kick-ass computer with a big monitor and 2. That you have a full, newer version of Adobe Photoshop. He addresses this, of course, but the fact is, this book won't do you much good if you don't have the means to drop a few thousand $ on good digital production gear. Oh, it also presumes YOU CAN DRAW. This is not an art instruction book, kids. It's really designed for the working or hobbyist illustrator who wants to step up their game to the next (digital) level.

That being said, his obsessively detailed workflow -- from filing schemes to Photoshop layering to making backups of backups -- is covered in very clear and concise detail, setting somewhat of a high bar from which the reader can scale back to their preference.

Freddie covers a lot of ground on all aspects of creating comic book line art, and even as a journeyman myself, I found myself having a lot of lightbulb-turning-on moments. The book even addresses hybrid digital-traditional workflows for penciling and inking.

The point at which it stops is coloring, so if that's something you're into, I'm guessing there's a DC Guide to Digitally Coloring Comics as well. If not, there should be.

One measure, perhaps, of a book's worth, is its intergenerational pliancy: do new readers acquire it and interpret it afresh down through the ages? The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, translated and introduced by Gregory Hays, by that standard, is very worthwhile, indeed. Hays suggests that its most recent incarnation--as a self-help book--is not only valid, but may be close to the author's intent. The book, which Hays calls, fondly, a "haphazard set of notes," is indicative of the role of philosophy among the ancients in that it is "expected to provide a 'design for living.'" And it does, both aphoristically ("Think of yourself as dead. You have lived your life. Now take what's left and live it properly.") and rhetorically ("What is it in ourselves that we should prize?"). Whether these, and other entries ("Enough of this wretched, whining monkey life.") sound life-changing or like entries in a teenager's diary is up to the individual reader, as it should be. Hays's introduction, which sketches the life of Marcus Aurelius (emperor of Rome A.D. 161-180) as well as the basic tenets of stoicism, is accessible and jaunty. --H. O'Billovich

It's worth trying different translations

I don't know who did the translation for this one but I found it very difficult to follow. This prompted me to look around and I found another translation by George Long (Thoughts of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus 1862). Even though it's not a recent translation, Long's version is often easier to understand. Compare the translations of the first paragraph for example:

This version:

Of my grandfather Verus I have learned to be gentle and meek, and to refrain from all anger and passion. From the fame and memory of him that begot me I have learned both shamefastness and manlike behaviour. Of my mother I have learned to be religious, and bountiful; and to forbear, not only to do, but to intend any evil; to content myself with a spare diet, and to fly all such excess as is incidental to great wealth. Of my great-grandfather, both to frequent public schools and auditories, and to get me good and able teachers at home; and that I ought not to think much, if upon such occasions, I were at excessive charges.

George Long's version:

From my grandfather Verus I learned good morals and the government of my temper. From the reputation and remembrance of my father, modesty and a manly character. From my mother, piety and beneficence, and abstinence, not only from evil deeds, but even from evil thoughts; and further, simplicity in my way of living, far removed from the habits of the rich. Having said this however, it's still worth comparing both translations which are free on the Kindle.

Memoirs of an Amazing Leader

When it comes to Stoic philosophy, Marcus Aurelius is second to Epictetus in the discussion of avoiding the indulgence of emotion. However, Aurelius' "Meditations" is different simply because it's the first leadership memoir based on Stoic philosophy.

The book is raw - it seems that these were never going to be published, so it had a bluntness to it and an honesty rare for a military leader, let alone one of the best Roman Emperors in history. He was a spiritual man, and tried to rationalize his duties. It lacks rhetorical flourish but it's honest.

I don't know if the book stands alone as a philosophical work, but it is an interesting work about self improvement, duty and service. Despite his reputation as a "philosopher king," the book remains a valuable book in leadership and history.

The Kindle version itself is pretty well laid out with ample enough notes and historical background on Aurelius himself to help you better understand the man himself. His notes range in length from a few sentences to multiple pages, so there's no real orderly format to the book (to me, this makes it more appealing.)

Since the Kindle version is free, give it a try. You'll find yourself better for it.

a superlative translation

Other reviewers here have commented about the work itself, so I would just add a note about this specific translation.

One of the most difficult tasks for a reader interested in non-English language work (and works from classical times in particular) is to choose an appropriate translation. Of course, what counts as `appropriate' is somewhat subjective.

What I was looking for was a translation that is clear and accurate; one that manages to convey something of a feeling for the both the person who wrote, and the times they wrote in. In this Staniforth excels.

Unlike say, the Benjamin Jowett translation of Plato which (at least to my ears) has a distinctly Victorian ring, or the popular new age paraphrases of many of the Stoics (and in truth they are paraphrases or adaptations rather than translations), to me Staniforth (whose translation dates from 1964) strikes just the right balance.

The words of Marcus Aurelius are rendered intelligibly and with a dignity and awareness of the historical context. The reader is neither forced to re-read and ponder (i.e., speculatively re-translate), nor wince at inappropriate colloquialisms of 21st century English. Better still, one can immediately perceive and appreciate the times in which the work was written. No mean accomplishment, to say the least.

Of course, each reader needs to make this judgment for themselves. Amazon provides an excellent (and free) way of doing this with its `search inside this book' feature, which is enormously useful for anyone making this decision.

A Carefully Crafted Rip-off

Have you ever received a colorful package of materials from IMP (International Masters Publishers)? Has it amazed you with the company's generosity ("Enhancing your Mind Body Spirit gives away over $1,000,000 in free gifts!"), enchanted you with a feeling of mystery ("The secrets of Mind Body Spirit can now be yours...") and tickled you with a feeling that you're just plain special ("Congratulations! You've already been awarded a Free Gift Package.")? The deal sounds good enough. After all, it couldn't hurt to get a free sample valued at up to $47.95 and a free gift if you reply quickly. It only costs $9.95 for the next set of cards, so why not?

This product, along with IMP in general, is an example of manipulative marketing scams at their best. Throw away the solicitation you received now before you get sucked into spending well more money than you bargained for. Sure, each packet of 12 cards "only" costs $9.95 (more like $12 after postage and tax), but what they don't tell you is that there are some 99 packets in the collection. Even with their "savings" options, this means the entire set will run you up around $1000, with each two-sided color card costing $1 a piece. Given that you can buy better books covering the same material for a significantly less amount of money, steer widely clear of IMP's scam. The little extras they throw on don't make up for the inflated cost either. The essential oils, for instance, are always diluted in a carrier oil and of generally poor quality and while I liked some of the incense they sent, five small sized sticks is hardly generous.

It's really too bad that the product is such a scam to collect. After collecting about a dozen packets myself, I found a seller on eBay offering the completed set for about $130. This, I thought, was a pretty reasonable price, and it gave me a chance to evaluate the content on its own merits aside from the unfortunate marketing. There really is some great material in the set. The pages have the visually-oriented in mind and are full of beautiful color pictures, artwork, and diagrams. I particularly like the posters, whose beauty sometimes makes them suitable for wall decorations! While lacking authority given the absence of authors and a bibliography, if you're discerning, there are plenty of gems to mine from this product in spite of its occasional factual errors. The breadth of topics includes: aromatherapy, herbal remedies, stress relief and good sleep, healthy eating, a massage course, a meditation course, a yoga course, a feng shui course, spiritual healing, world healing traditions, friendship bonds, spiritual sexuality, interpreting your dreams, an astrology course, a tarot course, a palmistry course, fortune telling traditions, using crystals, charms and symbols, nature magic, casting spells, Wiccan traditions, spiritual experiences, the craft of mediums and clairvoyants, and encounters with ghosts. That's a lot of stuff, with some sections are longer than others. If I were rating the content alone, I would probably give it three stars (slightly above average). If you can manage to get the entire set for cheap like I did, you're bound to find something that you like. Otherwise, stay away from IMP; this set is nice, but not that nice.

Expensive but delightful

I've been collecting the cards for the Mind-Body-Spirit kit for over a year now, and I love it. On the downside, it's going to end up costing me QUITE a lot--at $11/month, I'll easily have spent over $200 by the time my collection is complete. On the other hand, I was given the option to collect the cards faster and easier--three times as many, for about $17/month, and I opted against it. Why? Because half the joy is the monthly arrival of the new cards! If I got three times as many in a month, I wouldn't be able to linger over them the way I can with a smaller collection per delivery.

And I *do* linger over them. The photography is beautiful, and each topic gives you a comfortable introduction, or overview, of the topic, whether it's a particular astrological sign or the uses for lemon in healing and magic. If you want in-depth explanations of certain topics, this kit may not be for you. But if you appreciate having a beautiful, glossy-paged overview of scores of topics, giving you a better idea what you might want to research, consider this kit.

As a bonus? At least every other delivery comes with an extra treat of some sort--a CD of relaxing music, a collection of sandalwood incense, a chunk of amethyst, etc.--which has some relation to one of the cards in that delivery.

Bottom line? If you just want to save money and get a book, avoid this. But if you want a reminder approximately every month (I think it's more like every third week) of your interest in exploring ghosts, chakras, healing herbs, and many other areas of mind-body-spirt consciousness? Consider this beautifully arranged kit.

Nice Reference, but SO expensive...

After canceling my membership with IMP, I tried to find the set through an online auction. That's right. I said SET! There are so many inserts...a COMPLETE series would NEVER fit in ONE binder. Please do not be duped or allow yourself to be lied to by a second-hand seller claiming that ONE binder/"book" contains THE ENTIRE, COMPLETE set. The "Natural Healing" section alone can fill up one binder!
If a seller fails or refuses to list all sections, chapters and page insert numbers they are either a.) too ignorant to know what they have (not the orginal owner) or b.) extremely dishonest and hope you will buy one binder that they "think" is complete.
Please be VERY careful when dealing with these individuals.

So...why did I cancel my subscription to IMP? I was getting duplicate inserts and items in the mail AND I was being double charged. Another reviewer mentioned buying the set outright. If I had to do it over, that is probably what I would have done -but I never saw IMP advertise this option.
I hope this helps someone avoid the mistakes that I made...

The photos, layout and design is really nice. Right now I'm weighing my options to decide whether to start over and just buy the set outright. I'm just not sure that for the price, it is THAT nice. :)

One of the best sailing books I own

I own at least 50 sailing books, and there are a number of great books in my collection. I rank Expert Sailing Skills (and I am a novice to intermediate sailor, not an expert) right up with the best of the books I own. It answers a number of questions that I have had - What happens if you find yourself suddenly in a dense fog? How do I handle locks - how do they work? Docking maneuvers with spring lines, rafting up, sail trim, various emergencies and a wide range of sailing topics are all covered in a brief, informative and entertaining style. I am sure that most of these topics have been lifted directly from magazine articles which Tom Cunliffe has written for Yachting Monthly. That does not detract from the text, but in my opinion greatly enhances it through clear photographs. It might just as well have been titled "A Pictorial Guide to Expert Sailing Skills", and because so often a picture does speak a thousand words, it helps to explain the concepts extremely well.

A number of the books I own I have read once and put away. This is a book that I find myself returning to time and time again to answer questions that I have about handling a sailboat in a variety of circumstances. I highly recommend the book.
