Pawns in the Game, FBI Edition, by William Guy Carr

Here is a TRUE story of international intrigue, romances, corruption, graft, and political assassinations, the like of which has never been written before. It is the story of how different groups or atheistic- materialistic men have played in an international chess tournament to decide which group would win ultimate control of the wealth, natural resources, and man- power of the entire world. It is explained how the game has reached the final stage. The International Communists, and the International Capitalists, (both of whom have totalitarian ambitions) have temporarily joined hands to defeat Christian-democracy. The solution is to end the game the International Conspirators have been playing right now before one or another totalitarian-minded group imposes their ideas on the rest of mankind. The story is sensational and shocking, but it is educational because it is the TRUTH. The author offers practical solutions to problems so many people consider insoluble.

About the Author
William Guy Carr, R.D. Commander R.C.N. (R) Retired was born June 2, 1895 and died October 2, 1959.

At the early age of twelve the author was thoroughly indoctrinated into the Bolshevik ideology by two revolutionary missionaries who travelled on the same ship with him out to the Orient in 1907. Unlike many others he didn't swallow the bait they offered him "Hook, Line, and Sinker." He decided to keep an open mind, and to investigate matters thoroughly, before reaching any conclusions. His investigations and studies of all angles of the International Conspiracy have taken him to nearly every country in the world.

Commander Carr had a distinguished naval career. During World War I he served as Navigating Officer of H.M. Submarines. In World War II he was Naval Control Officer for the St. Lawrence; then Staff Officer Operations at Shelbourne, N.S.; then Senior Naval Officer at Goose Bay, Labrador. As an Officer on the staff of Commodore Reginald Brock he organized the 7th Victory Loan for the twenty-two Royal Canadian Naval Training Divisions.

Maybe the Most Important Book Ever Written
By Brian J Hay
This may be one of the most important books ever written. It should be required reading in all schools (if there's ever to be a chance of straightening out our mess of a society that is). That won't happen though, not with America's system of public education in the hands of the Rockefeller Group. That's one point Commander Carr didn't catch. It's also one of the few.
Pawns in the Game is the culmination of a lifetime of research. If understood it shakes the beliefs of most readers to their core. The amount of documentation Carr found is staggering. The occasions where he produces it are the times when it's absolutely necessary to make what he says believable. Communism was created and funded by American bankers. Members of the same group were Roosevelt's advisors during World War II. Carr produces enough evidence to make it believable. Hitler tried to form an alliance with Britain in order to hunt down financiers from that same group. He didn't want to fight England. It makes sense. England and Germany were never natural enemies. Germany was the first nation to recover from the great depression. That's well known. Carr explains why. Hitler broke away from the International Bankers and enacted a system of monetary reform. Austria (Hitler's home Province) had enacted a similar system in the years that followed World War I. It was successful until the Rothschilds raised trade sanctions against them. Hitler's actions provoked the bankers to the point where they initiated war against him. Carr produces solid evidence when he states these cases. Much of what he has to say contradicts most of what we spend our lives being taught. But, when placed alongside historical events most of us know about what he says makes sense. The events we knew about end up making more sense as well.
This is only a small part of the book though. Carr traced the history of the money lenders from their beginnings through to the formation of the Illuminati by Adam Weishaupt. He also traced the House of Rothschild from their beginnings as the head of the group of Goldsmiths that financed the English Revolution. He explains their involvement in almost every facet of our history. He explains how these things were funded, and by who. He gives detailed analysis of their methods. The book isn't perfect. Often, he traces lines of involvement rather than chronological history (which results in moving from era to era and then back again in the next chapter). There are times when his guess work is obvious. But these are minor complaints. When a reader finishes the book they understand not only what's happened in the past, but also to see how those same things are being initiated now. This is just a small part of what this book covers. When a person is through it they don't see a conspiracy. They see a money trail.
This work should never be out of print. As a guide through the past it's astonishing. As a guide toward the future and how to influence its shape, it's invaluable. It's inaccurate to refer to this book as something one "finishes". Anyone with an appetite for truth never finishes with it. There's too much truth in there to keep from going back to it again and again.

Excellent Historical Outline of Globalist Conspiracy to the 1950s
By H. Guentert
One reviewer stated, "This book was recommended highly by Ted Gunderson, a former FBI agent who now speaks out agains the Globalists. Gunderson claimed this book is the best intro in the the plan for a one world government."

Compared to other, more current, books I have read this book provides more information in fewer pages. It also had footnotes and references to most (if not all) the source information and even a glossary.

I agree that this book is the best intro to the Globalist conspiracy that I have read so far. Even though there are many more current books, this one provided many answers to questions regarding the period from the time of Christ to to near the author's death in 1959. Once you have read this book, the more current books like those by Col. Donn de Grand Pre (2 new ones coming out in Sept. 05) will be easier to absorb.

I only found a few points that I would question on accuracy; but considering the amount of information provided that would seem to be expected, and I continue to find the "anti-semetic" label inaccurate. Carr is anti-Zionist and anti-Globalist, and he also makes the point that only a small number of Jews and Gentiles are part of the "New World Order" or Illuminati.

He is describing the most ruthless of international organized criminals who have murdered regardless of race, religion, or political party; so we all need to oppose it while we still can. The CFR appointments, the Federal Reserve System, the United Nations, the corrupt lobbyists, the Rothschild Empire, the thriving illegal drug trade, the assassinations of Presidents, the no-bid government contracts, the funding of both sides of wars, and the use of "terrorism" to destroy soverign democratic counties is history not theory, but it is certainly conspiracy, and this is the tip of the iceburg.

Buy it before it is too late
By daretolive2011
I have read many books concerning the supposed global financial conspiracy and I consider this to be one of the most cogent and well-researched. I agree that the author has been, and will continue to be, labelled anti-semitic. That is logically equal to calling someone anti-Italian because the accuse the mafia of having Italian members. The author does offer clear explanations that a small group of very powerful and rich men who may have a large number of members who are considered Jewish in their ranks. It makes perfect sense, without any need for conjecture as to the motives of the author. I believe the purpose of the book is to expose the reader to the reality of the world in which they live. It does conform with many Biblical teachings and prophecies, without being preachy. It is informative and any clean thinker will find this book enlightening. In short, buy it and learn or do not buy it and remain fooled. Make the right choice.

The legacy ofthe sacred feminine

The Chalice and the Blade tells a new story of our cultural origins. It showsthat warfare and the war of the sexes are neither divinely nor biologicallyordained. It provides verification that a better future is possible—and is in factfirmly rooted in the haunting dramas of what happened in our past.

Amazon.com Review
Some books are like revelations, they open the spirit to unimaginable possibilities. The Chalice and the Blade is one of those magnificent key books that can transform us and...initiate fundamental changes in the world. With the most passionate eloquence, Riane Eisler proves that the dream of peace is not an impossible utopia. -- Isabelle Allende, author of The House of the Spirits

From Publishers Weekly
Women played leading roles in the first Christian communities; Jesus' teachings had a feminist bent; ancient Hebrews worshipped the prehistoric goddess-mother well into monarchic times; and Nazis, with their system of male dominance, were a direct throwback to the Indo-European or Aryan invaders whom they crudely imitated. These controversial ideas and findings suggest the thrust of Eisler's highly readable synthesis. She convincingly documents the global shift from egalitarian to patriarchal societies, interweaving new archeological evidence and feminist scholarship. In her scenario, as womenonce veneratedwere degraded to pawns controlled by men, social cooperation gave way to reliance on violence, hierarchy and authoritarianism. The book, despite its jargon, is an important contribution to social history. Eisler wrote The Equal Rights Handbook.

From Library Journal
In this first of a projected three-book series, Eisler covers terrain also described by Marilyn French in Beyond Power ( LJ 6/1/85) and Gerda Lerner in The Creation of Patriarchy ( LJ 7/86). In prehistorical times, Eisler argues, women and men lived together in egalitarian communities devoted to nurturance; with the imposition of male domination, female values gave way to creeds of hierarchy, aggression, power, obedience. Eisler, a futurist, posits a new society based on the recovery of more humane values. She gives us a broader reach of time than Lerner, and she does not swamp her outline in detail as French did. An imaginative and persuasive work, Eisler's effort is undermined by jargon; her view of the future is exceedingly optimistic. For a select audience. A key to reading between the lines, and lies, of history and society
By kpoling
This book, citing numerous learned sources from the fields of archaeology, theology, science, visual art, and literature, to name a few, vividly illustrates much that is missing in the dominant view of western historical perspectives. The central message of this book, presented in an engaging but no less thorough style, is that, with the relatively recent scientific approach in archaeology, new information about the history of civilization has come to light that clearly challenges the long-held assumption that civilization has always been based on the ranking of one half of humanity over the other: the familiar domination of men over women, masters over slaves, etc.

As we are presented with mounting archeological evidence from a great many Neolithic cultural sites that proves humanity was capable of peaceful social organization and technological advances, Eisler presents an excellent social analysis of what this new knowledge implies for our present and future.

The crux of her message, that human potential is stunted in dominator societies that use force to maintain their rigid social hierarchies, is supported by ample evidence from numerous sources. The new alternative, a continuation of the interrupted ancient partnership model that emphasizes the linking of humanity in peaceful equality, starting with the most fundamental step of linking women with men, as opposed to the ranking of one half of humanity over the other, is presented as essential to our very survival as a species.

The book is superbly researched, and though it presents a broad, sweeping view that often leaves unanswered questions (one of my persistent questions is how to defend against force without simply presenting a counter-force), it offers a great array of resources for further reading. While I thought this book would answer my questions, it actually made me ask new questions and awoke within me a voracity to learn more, which I suspect is its intent. Above all, it gives us useful tools and terminology for reading between the lines and lies of our dominate cultural worldview, and these help dispel confusion and hopelessness for all who work for a peaceful world.

Now to address the inaccurate nature of some prior reviewers of this book (you know who you are):
Eisler clearly defines, numerous times, the difference between dominator hierarchies, in which a pyramidal social system uses force to maintain its power structure, and systems hierarchies, in which functions increase in complexity and function, as in biological systems such as cells to organs. The social parallels to the latter are virtually nonexistent, but Eisler is very careful with this definition nonetheless, to avoid confusion. Also, as it would be very clear to anyone who actually read the book, the characterization of life-affirming values such as caring, nurturing, creativity, and intuition as "feminine" in this book is always done in the context of how these values are perceived in a social system based on ranking and enforced by violence. The characterization of these qualities as feminine in this context is meant to discourage the male half of humanity from espousing them. The characterization masculine the qualities of domination and violence is how these rank-based systems maintain the status-quo. This idea of assigning a gender to specific life-affirming or destructive attributes is horribly damaging to men and women. To anyone who actually read the book, it would have been obvious that the alternative to social structures in which men dominate women is NOT those in which women dominate men. It is a society in which women and men are linked as equals. And if women happen to get mentioned ahead of men in this book, it is a literary courtesy whose time has come.

another look at our collective history
By BeingBreath
Eisler reframes the age old idea of the 'war between the sexes' into something equally polarizing, yet more inclusive. Many people have examined the problems of humanity as an inevitable outcome of our innate aggression and territoriality. Our history clearly how the forces of war, colonialism, nationalism and greed have shaped the world as we know it.

On closer inspection, however, the picture is less clear than we have long believed. I was surprised to learn that archaeology, as a science, only became serious after World War II. Before this time, Egyptology and the like were mostly a front for imperialistic grave robbers, vying for the shiniest addition to their national museums. Dating of artifacts was done through assumption until the advent of carbon 14 technology and dendrochronography. All of this combined created a vision of the past that was heavily tainted by the expectations and experience of those who unearthed ancient sites.

Proper dating technology has painted a new picture of the ancient past. It seems that in many parts of Old Europe, there were Goddess worshiping cultures that harnessed their intelligence towards creating healthy communities. In these cities, sometimes occupied for millenia, there is no evidence of weapons, ruler-kings, or the glorification of war. In fact, some sites were occupied for thousands of years without any evidence of war. These cultures showed a surprising equality between the sexes, as well as a lack of hierarchy. The concentration of wealth by the powerful that we take for granted is something that came much later.

As the nomadic herding tribes migrated into the regions occupied by these Neolithic culture, they found great wealth and little defensive technology. The cities were rather ripe for the plucking. Once this occurred, people reorganized their focus, working hard to develop weapons technology for offensive and defensive purposes. This arms race continues in the present day.

The unfortunate side effect of this race is that early technological advances in city planning, in art, and other technologies of peace were put aside in the face of this new human created danger. Earlier assumptions about the dates of some primitive looking artifacts turned out to be wrong; after war came to these cultures, their technological development came to a halt, and much technology was lost and forgotten.

These peaceful Neolithic cultures predate Sumer by millennia. Sumer is often recognized as the cradle of civilization; it would be better to describe it as the cradle of modern culture of warfare. Eisler calls these cultures "dominator cultures", whereas the earlier Goddess worshiping groups engaged in a partnership model. By the time that Sumer was in full swing, the partnership model had been overcome by the warrior culture of the nomadic steppes.

As we hurtle into the 21st century, we spend unthinkable amounts of resources coming with better ways to kill each other. The amount of resources spent on military budgets worldwide could transform our world if we put them to better use. We have the technology to feed, clothe, and house people, but as long as we surrender to the dominator model, resources will continue to be concentrated in the hands of the few while the many suffer from need and lack. Eisler urges us to give up the old ways of aggressive ranking and warfare, and create a new world in which we find solutions that work to build communities, create prosperity, and improve the quality of life for our entire human family.

Probably one of the best and most life changing books I have ever read....
By Erin Funk
If you are someone who looks around at this crap world of ours and wonders what the hell happened to us--- then this is the book for you. I read it years ago on a whim in college and it has changed my life. It was like everything I ever thought about the world, humans, and culture was summed up in one book and backed up by historical fact. I majored in History in college and do consider myself to be a history nerd so this book was perfect for me. For those whose eyes go glossy with a history lesson, this book might be a little difficult. But Eisler is an amazing writer and often summarizes her analysis' throughout the book so it should help.

But I truly believe that everyone should be forced to read this book. But I also feel that we should have to learn about the enslavement of women that has existed for the last 15,000 as much as we are forced to learn and study wars and imperialism (which is the main focus of almost all history lessons). Sigh. Maybe in another couple generations....

If you like this book, I recommend checking out Daniel Quinn's Ishmael. Its more of a manifesto than anything else. But I think it explains several points of Eisler's without the feminist twist to it all (but of course the feminist twist means everything, cause what is it to be free and equal when one half of humanity is brought up to serve another?)

Human Brain Evolution: The Influence of Freshwater and Marine Food ResourcesFrom Wiley-Blackwell

The evolution of the human brain and cognitive ability is one of the central themes of physical/biological anthropology. This book discusses the emergence of human cognition at a conceptual level, describing it as a process of long adaptive stasis interrupted by short periods of cognitive advance. These advances were not linear and directed, but were acquired indirectly as part of changing human behaviors, in other words through the process of exaptation (acquisition of a function for which it was not originally selected). Based on studies of the modem human brain, certain prerequisites were needed for the development of the early brain and associated cognitive advances. This book documents the energy and nutrient constraints of the modern brain, highlighting the significant role of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) in brain development and maintenance. Crawford provides further emphasis for the role of essential fatty acids, in particular DHA, in brain development, by discussing the evolution of the eye and neural systems.

This is an ideal book for Graduate students, post docs, research scientists in Physical/Biological Anthropology, Human Biology, Archaeology, Nutrition, Cognitive Science, Neurosciences. It is also an excellent selection for a grad student discussion seminar.

“This is an ideal book for Graduate students, post docs, research scientists in Physical/ Biological Anthropology, Human Biology, Archaeology, Nutrition, Cognitive Science, Neurosciences. It is also an excellent selection for a grad student discussion seminar.” (Human Evolution, 1 March 2013)

"This volume...is a puissant move away from the heavy, earthbound view of hominid evolution and a move toward a greater emphasis upon the role of water and waterways in hominid development, survival, and diversification" (Phillip Tobias, Foreward, Human Brain Evolution)

From the Back Cover

A multidisciplinary treatment of the importance of aquatic foods in human brain evolution

The evolution of the human brain and cognitive ability is one of the central themes of physical/biological anthropology. Based on studies of the modern human brain, certain prerequisites were needed for the development of the early brain and associated cognitive advances. Important prerequisites included polyunsaturated fatty acids and other brain selective nutrients, which are found in highest quantity in fish and shellfish. Early hominins were able to access these foods when frequenting wetlands, particularly lake and river margins. Increased consumption of this high-quality diet over time exaptively diverted energy to the brain, and was a catalyst for brain growth. The later exploitation of marine shellfish and fish is roughly correlated with the emergence of Homo sapiens, and cognitive advance associated with changing human behaviors.

Human Brain Evolution: The Influence of Freshwater and Marine Food Resources documents the energy and nutrient constraints of the modern brain, highlighting the significant role of brain selective nutrients in brain development and the evolution of neural systems. There is a particular focus on two long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) in brain development and maintenance—docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (AA). These nutrients are found in the highest quantity in fish and shellfish, and this volume further discusses fossil, morphological, and isotopic evidence for hominin consumption of these foods over time.

The contributors to this volume come from several fields—paleoanthropology, nutrition, neurochemistry, archaeology, and paleobiology—providing a multidisciplinary approach to the complex and challenging topic of the evolution of the brain. The first half of this volume focuses specifically on the biochemical and nutritional requirements of encephalization of the human brain, best acquired opportunistically (exaptively) through consumption of fish and/or shellfish. The second half provides multidisciplinary evidence on the exploitation of initially, freshwater and later, marine fish and shellfish, by successive hominin taxa. These persuasive, thought-provoking discussions and arguments provide the basis for a new perspective and help the reader understand the vital role freshwater and marine foods have in human brain function and, hence, evolution.

Human Brain Evolution is essential reading for graduate students, postdoctoral students, and research scientists in physical/biological anthropology, human biology, archaeology, nutrition, cognitive science, and the neurosciences. It is also an excellent supplemental text for biological anthropology or a graduate student discussion seminar.

Marriage! The Journey: From Neediness & Myths to God's Fulfillment, by Anne Trippe

In Marriage! The Journey, Anne has gone public with the wisdom and insight she has shared privately with couples since 1986. This book is a first. It is not just another book on marriage. Anne has given us a guide for creating relationships that reflects God’s original intention for husbands and wives. Marriage! The Journey confronts commonly held myths about marriage with truth. The book shows how God desires to use even the mate’s imperfections to bring each partner into dependency on Christ’s Life and into intimacy with each other.
Andy Stanley
Senior Pastor

Anne Trippe has captured for us the depths of marital intimacy and what Father designed for marriage. What she has written here is not theory. It is well tested through many applications in the lives of those she has counseled over the years. Anne candidly exposes the lies that have kept couples bound in unhappy marriages, but, along with that, unveils the truth that sets them free. This book will be lifesaving for many couples who think there is no hope for their marriage.
Tom Grady
Founder, SAR Adventures
Founder, Grace Ministries International

It is with great enthusiasm that I recommend Anne Trippe’s book, Marriage! The Journey. Anne offers no behavior modification advice couched in religious language. Her prescription is simple, practical and biblical. With winsome clarity, she points us back to the indwelling life of Christ and shows us how to experience Him as the very life of our marriage. This book is a “must read” for those wanting to know the kind of marriage God intends for us all.
Dr. Steve McVey
President, Grace Walk Ministries

Dr. Anne Trippe and her husband, Vinson, have been married since 1962. They have four children and thirteen grandchildren. Who's fault is it?
By G. Massey
This book not only puts your marriage into perspective, but it also puts your life into perspective.

During conflict we have a tendency to point a finger. The problem is that we point the finger at the wrong person. You see, we can't change others, but we can change ourselves. And this is the start of reconciliation. Is it easy? No not at all?

The problem is that we focus on our spouse to bring peace. Well why would the source of your pain bring you peace? And now you're on a crazy cycle looking to the person who causes chaos to all of a sudden bring peace. And when that doesn't happen, you despise that person more and more, and the cycle continues. It's a lose lose.

This is a Christian Book. If you don't believe that Jesus was the creator of this Universe, this book is not for you.

This book will challenge you. YOU have to be the change. You can't say "Well, I'll change if he/she changes too" or "I'll work on my marriage, if he/she does X, Y, Z." Because if you were to die today, and God asked you about your marriage. Are you going to respond like Adam & Eve and play the blame game? We are all responsible for our own actions regardless of another human being.

To sum this book up. Love Christ First. With Christ at the top, you will know how to love all others. You will know how to FORGIVE, as Christ forgives you DAILY.

Oh What An Amazing Journey, Marriage Is!
By TGram
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Pastoral Counselor, thank you Anne for truly revealing our Father's Heart for Marriage! It has always been about "Christ Living His Life In Us, Through Us, and As Us." When the center of most books are on "man" this book really expresses Our Father's Heart...His Son. Thank you for sharing others points of view as well it gave the book even more credibility and hope. This has been the journey for my love and I as well. We have been married for 34 years and are experiencing daily what it means to Rest In the Finished Work of Christ individually and as a couple!! THANK YOU FATHER FOR THE GREATEST GIFT OF ALL AGES... YOUR SON AND THE SECOND GREATEST GIFT...MARRIAGE...

The Best Book on Marriage
By D. Causey
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and I believe this book to be the best book on Christian marriage. So many books are written on marriage, but this book is the answer to healing in a marriage. The book takes you through 4 couples that are being counseled and shows you the journey they took through marriage counseling. It also offers exercises and other supplements that help you determine the state of your own marriage and how you can be complete in life by following the truths in this book. It is a must have for all marriages; ones that are hurting as well as those that just need some enrichment.

Great book for kids, especially reluctant readers
By Honest And Truly
Creature Teacher: The Final Exam follows twelve year old Tommy Farrelly as he heads to summer camp. Tommy comes from a competitive family. Though it’s just four – his parents and his sister Darleen – they manage to compete for everything from who gets to a restaurant first to who finishes eating fastest and more. Everything in life is a competition, except Tommy simply isn’t interested in following their example. Needless to say, his family – very vocally – considers Tommy to be a loser and send him to Winner Island Camp where losers never leave the island. Though his family assumes that means everyone will be turned into a winner, Tommy quickly realizes that there’s a much darker reason behind it.

Winner Island Camp is tormented by a teacher who simply showed up one day. Mrs. Maaargh is really a monster, and Uncle Felix, the camp’s director, has made a deal with her that she can eat the loser of the camp at the end of the session if she lets everyone else go home. With Tommy arriving two days late, he’s already several steps behind, and the fact that he doesn’t believe what his fellow campers tell him about the camp only makes it worse. He’s quickly on the bottom of Mrs. Maaargh’s list.

Though the book is aimed at kids, it’s one that adults can read without rolling their eyes repeatedly. It’s obviously a different world and somewhat over the top, but the characters are so different from book to book and have such definite personalities that it is an enjoyable read. I like that the characters don’t change entirely throughout the book but rather use what others consider weaknesses to overcome their obstacles by the end.

Good book
By Oscar ortega
I love goosebumps this is a good book I have read and I couldn't put the book down. I would rather read it than play video games! It doesn't take long for tommy to figure out the problem. His whole family is with the best and so he is sent off to a special a camp that will make him a winner and the reason his parents send him to the camp was because his whole family is so competitive and jimmy always lost so that's why is parents send him to the camp, but mean while he was in the camp he saw something was not right and then Mrs. Maaargh who takes lessons on to seriously. And it will make you wonder will he survived.

About the Author
Iain Stewart first visited Vietnam in 1991 when he was one of the first wave of travellers to explore the country after the American War. At that time all foreigners were called Ling Xo (Soviets) by the locals, who only had contact with nationalities from the communist bloc. Times have changed but Vietnam remains as fascinating as ever. Iain's been a travel writer since 1997, writing guidebooks for several publishers and covering terrain as diverse as Ibiza and Indonesia.

Generally good all around guide
By Wayne
Vietnam is a fast changing place. Since the time that they first opened up the country to visitors from the US, cities like Saigon have undergone so much construction that a guide book from just a few years ago is sure to be outdated. This one covers things from the old to the new. It's the result of about six months of research from people who visited the area, and covers a lot of ground.

The primary emphasis of any guide book should be to familiarize readers with the country, its regions, what parts to visit and what to expect there. This book does a good job of that, giving lots of details about everything from historical landmarks to beach resorts, and full color photos.

The book also gives you background about the country, its history, politics, and how things developed into what they are now. Understanding the background and culture is important for the enjoyment of any trip.

This book covers the major regions, cities, towns, and just about all the places that a tourist would be likely to go. It won't cover every little town, and in some cases, resort areas are covered well but the surrounding towns are hardly mentioned. If a place warrants a few paragraphs, it would not hurt to mention when it also has a world class resort rather than making sure to list 25 hotels in the city next to it.

On the other hand, there are far more places mentioned than a person could reasonably expect to cover in a several trips, and most hotels mentioned also have their websites or email address listed, making it easy to visit those, and visit travel websites for more specifics.

There's a lot of information on different ethnic groups, how different areas compare to each other, and even a crash course on the Vietnamese language and even a few phrases in some regional languages. It's tougher to cover a language like Vietnamese, and this book tends to emphasize northern pronunciations (it doesn't tell you that.) It also uses some phrases that should be worded differently depending on whether you are talking to a man or woman, somebody older or younger, etc. but it doesn't tell you that part either.

Nevertheless, you should have no problem getting around Vietnam when using this book as a starting point. You'll want to use it to research your trip, and use it as a hands on guide once you get to Vietnam. I've been to Vietnam four times in the last 15 years or so, and would have found this book very helpful. It doesn't cover every place I've been, but points out a lot of places I missed.

Don't bother with Kindle version
By Philip W
I am sure that the print version is great as usual, but the Kindle edition is quite poor:

- the table of contents is trivial (perhaps 10 items), which in an ebook of this size makes navigation almost impossible
- there is no index (I don't know if the print version has one)
- each city section has a set of links to sub-sections, but does not work well in the larger structure

Also, as someone else pointed out: what is Angkor Wat doing in this guide?

Overall, for a relatively modern, forward thinking publishing house appealing to a market that pretty much screams "eBook!", this is a very disappointing effort.

Very good guide!
By Foxx
I believe the fellow from the other post missed the fact that Lonely Planet's Travel Guides are not written by a sole author, but rather by a team of several people.

This information easily undoes the math according to which it is not possible to go (or gather information) on all the places indicated in the Guide.

That being said, the Vietnam, together with the Myanmar, Cambodia and Korea Guides, was my first experience in travelling with Lonely Planet and, in the end, I was quite satisfed with it.

LP's guides contain a lot of interesting historical information and have very nice hotel and restaurant hints.

Bear in mind, however, that the publisher is much more interested in lower income countries and less expensive options.

Therefore, while the Myanmar, Cambodia and Vietnam guides were amazing, the Korea one was very disappointing. Furthermore, LP guides lack information on most luxurious tourism options.

If that is your intention, you should go to Frommer's (that, for instance, has a much better Korea guide.

Amazon.com Review
There Are No Children Here, the true story of brothers Lafeyette and Pharoah Rivers, ages 11 and 9 at the start, brings home the horror of trying to make it in a violence-ridden public housing project. The boys live in a gang-plagued war zone on Chicago's West Side, literally learning how to dodge bullets the way kids in the suburbs learn to chase baseballs. "If I grow up, I'd like to be a bus driver," says Lafeyette at one point. That's if, not when--spoken with the complete innocence of a child. The book's title comes from a comment made by the brothers' mother as she and author Alex Kotlowitz contemplate the challenges of living in such a hostile environment: "There are no children here," she says. "They've seen too much to be children." This book humanizes the problem of inner-city pathology, makes readers care about Lafeyette and Pharoah more than they may expect to, and offers a sliver of hope buried deep within a world of chaos.

From Publishers Weekly
The devastating story of brothers Lafayette and Pharoah Rivers, children of the Chicago ghetto, is powerfully told here by Kotlowitz, a Wall Street Journal reporter who first met the boys in 1985 when they were 10 and seven, respectively. Their family includes a mother, a frequently absent father, an older brother and younger triplets. We witness the horrors of growing up in an ill-maintained housing project tyrannized by drug gangs and where murders and shootings frequently occur. Lafayette tries to cope by stifling his emotions and turning himself into an automaton, while Pharoah first attempts to regress into early childhood and then finds a way out by excelling at school. Kotlowitz's affecting report does not have a "neat and tidy ending. . . . It is, instead, about a beginning, the dawning of two lives." These are lives at a crossroads, not totally without hope of triumphing over their origin. ( Apr .

From School Library Journal
YA-- Life in Chicago's Henry Horner housing project robbed Lafeyette and Pharoah Rivers of their childhood and innocence. The crowded apartment housed LaJoe, six of her eight children, and a procession of needy relatives and friends. Bleaker than the overcrowding was the physical condition of the apartment; conditions outside were worse. Drug use, crime, shootings, and other violence were commonplace. Retribution sure and swift followed if someone saw or knew too much. Through his extensive research and his intimate friendship with the Rivers family, Kotlowitz paints a poignant, heartbreaking picture of life in the inner-city ghetto and the overwhelming odds children must overcome to break out of the vicious cycle of poverty and crime. A must-read for everyone. --Grace Baun, R. E. Lee High Sch . , Springfield, VA

Provocative Book
By Firestarter
This book is shocking, troubling, disgusting, and heartbreaking.

The author of this book follows two black boys who live in poverty in a crime ridden housing project in 1980s Chicago. Readers are left to feel sympathy for these children, who not for the stupidity and selfishness of their parents, might have otherwise grown up in a decent neighborhood with better opportunities.

While readers are left morning the lost lives of these children you cannot help but feel contempt for their parents (plural). Their mother began having children while she was young (14 to be exact). She raises her children in the SAME housing project where she grew up. In fact, it is the ONLY place she has ever lived. She has several children by the same man, who would rather shoot a needle in his arm, than use his modest (but good) paycheck to get his family out of the ghetto (and yes, he made enough money to purchase a modest home in a suburban community). His relationship with his children and their mother is that of a homeless person who is allowed to crash on a relative's sofa ever so often. He comes and goes as if he doesn't have any responsibility. The only real glimpse we get into his relationship with his wife is her blaming HIM for ruining her life (she doesn't take any responsibility for her poor choices in life). We learn that he had children outside of their marriage which is what caused the "come and go" relationship with his wife and family.

The family survives off welfare and public assistance. The mother doesn't work (supposedly because she can't due to her hand that was sliced up when she was attacked at knife point) and the father's paycheck goes toward his drug problem. Their poor children are left to survive almost completely on their own through legitimate odd jobs and selling drugs.

One by one the children in book (both main characters and their friends) become victims of poor parenting, poor environments, and poverty. The family's oldest children have their own children out of wedlock and eventually end up in prison. Their friends are murdered by rival gangs and the police. Their hosing project is riddled with gun fire during gang wars (so much so that the family has a "special" hiding place to prevent getting shot).

Readers will walk away from this book wondering what happened to the two boys who are the main characters (a little research and I discovered they both did time in prison for drug dealing...something they swore they would never do as children in this book) and you're left understanding the opposition to welfare, section 8 etc. This is a good book that shows almost everything wrong with the urban poor in inner cities.

A Dose of Reality
By Rich Murphy
I found this to be a telling account of one of America's most shameful faces: allowing our fellow citizens to live under such squalid conditions with no hope in sight. The author depicts realistically the story of one African American family in Chicago with a devoted mother, an impaired and absent father, and kids of indomitable spirit who are buffered by factors not of their own making.

Unfortunately, Ronald Reagan's image of welfare mothers driving Cadillacs persist today, perhaps even more so than when he spoke of it in the 80's. But this book explains the realities of good people in horrible circumstances, doing the best they can for their kids and the kids struggling to survive, never mind thrive, in incredibly bad circumstances.

I only hope that conditions have improved since this book was written...but I strongly suspect they haven't. Until we help people in these circumstances, America in its own right, will be a third world country, regrettably.

Good book. Sparks many questions
By William Fields
This was an outstanding book, especially, when read critically and analytically. I recommend diving into this book with this question in mind, "How do we fix it?" By "it," I mean the racial and ethnic problem in America that is clearly depicted within the "projects." More directly, ask yourself what problems do you see and how as a society and as an individual can we solve them. When reading with this question in mind, many ideas will develop and become clustered in your mind. With all the varying problems (drugs, the criminal justice system, gangs, lack of role models, etc) that are seen within the book, it may seem impossible to answer this question, however, as a society we must try. I recommend this book because it offers a great plot in addition to its educational value.
