Imagine a place so remote it has escaped evolution. Imagine prehistoric footprints leading back in time--imagine they were made yesterday. Stranded in the African savanna, paleoanthropologist Ken Lauder encounters the inconceivable--a protohuman boy from a breed thought to have been extinct for two million years. From this irresistible "what if" premise, Popescu blends fascinating scientific speculation with scientific fact to explore the mysteries of how we become "human." 4 cassettes.

Amazon.com Review
In an unexplored Kenyan savanna, a paleoanthropologist finds a boy whose physical characteristics match those of the "missing link" and realizes that he's discovered a place that has escaped the normal evolutionary processes. Soon the modern world threatens to encroach on his bond with the boy as a poacher tracks them down and another anthropologist threatens to steal the discovery. Their only hope is to disappear into the forest with the boy's tribe.

From Library Journal
Ken Lauder has made one of the greatest scientific discoveries of all time, but he may not live to announce it. On a remote Kenyan savanna and mountainside he has found evidence of existing protohumans, perhaps the long-sought "missing link" in humankind's evolutionary chain. But Kenya is in political turmoil and on the verge of civil war-which for Ken may be the least of his problems. He has been abandoned on the deadly savanna with neither supplies nor weapons and is pursued by murderous thugs who for unknown reasons already have attempted to kill him. Are they simply poachers into whose terrain he has intruded, or have they been sent by the government? Or have they been hired by a world-famous scientist with a reputation for appropriating what others have found first? Befriended by an eight-year-old boy of the protohuman tribe, Ken, if he is to survive, will have to live as one of them. A riveting thriller and an accessible crash course in paleoanthropology, this novel by the author of Amazon Beaming (LJ 8/91) also grapples with the fundamental question of what it means to be human. Highly recommended. From Booklist
What results from crossing Arthur Conan Doyle's Lost World with Jane Goodall's chimpanzee observations? Monstrous popularity--or so the publisher is gambling, with a six-figure print run. A fantasy containing the collision of the present with the prehistoric, Popescu's tale justifies the risk. Popescu invents a plateau in East Africa frozen in evolutionary stasis. Wonder not how it remained undiscovered in an age of satellite surveillance: Popescu's protagonists, American Ken Lauder and Kenyan Ngili Ngiamena, suspend their disbelief, and we must follow. The two stumble upon the place in the course of excavating hominid fossils, one of which seems to be only 10,000 years old. Returning to Nairobi to figure out this problem, their activities attract the interest of various parties, most of them nefarious. The eminence grise of paleoanthropology, Cyril Anderson, resents the upstarts' intrusion into his bailiwick, while Ngili's family becomes embroiled in the underworld of Kenyan politics. These subplots percolate while Lauder goes back to the dig area to pursue his mounting suspicion that australopithecine still lives. Slowly revealing what Lauder discovers on the plateau, Popescu teases and pleases by stages in suspensefully dramatized, exhilarating speculations about the appearance and behavior of the protohumans. He builds to a crescendo when the subplotters finally converge on the plateau in a fiery, bullet-crossed conclusion. A wild encounter of human ancestors and descendants that will captivate legions. A good start
By A Customer
This is a promising work from someone new to the Anglo-Saxon literature. Petru Popescu is Romanian, and therefore his style and language are not as polished as expected from your average American author. His Latin lyricism translates oddly at times, and his descriptions are long and detailed. Character developing is uneven, but this is a minor sin compared to other aspects you will find worthwile.
Overall, it's a good book, and shows an great interest in social studies. This twist brings new life to an idea as old as Arthur Conan Doyle's "Lost World". Give it a chance - if you want more than other (similarly-priced) brainless slam-bang, you might like it.

An Unexpected Find
By A Customer
I bought this book two years ago at a "dollar store" during an ice storm which left us without electricity for two weeks. There wasn't much to do so I bought this book thinking it probably wouldn't be too great; I mean I spent three bucks on it at the dollar store. But, I hoped it would ward off the boredom. I didn't get to start reading it until a month ago and was I ever surprised. This is a great book! As the last reviewer stated, it's a great way to teach science through fiction. I had never put too much thought into how humans evolved. I have even found myself watching The Discovery Channel to find out more about the protohumans.

Aileen's view on PMP Exam Preparation

To learn to ride a bike, a person must ride a bike. To learn to pass the PMP Exam, a person must practice with hundreds and hundreds of PMP Exam Prep sample questions.

This book is the second book in our series of mini- books - PMP Exam Preparation Simplified Series Over the last 16 years Aileen has helped over 10,000 project managers in her workshops obtain their PMP credential. Often the participants in Aileen's workshops are successful project managers who may lack experience is specific topics on the PMP Exam. The topics that participants seem to struggle with the most are:

  • Earned value Management (EVM)
  • Contract types and calculations(FPIF, CPIF, PTA, etc.)
  • Network diagrams including float, free float, project float, leads and lags
  • Financial based questions including IRR, ROI, etc.
  • Statistical based questions
There is one thing all of these areas have in common and it is math.

Aileen has decided to create mini-books in each of these areas so that students can gain both the knowledge and the confidence to get these questions right.

Many project managers want to study just enough to pass the PMP Exam and not one second more. Aileen's view is to practice on enough sample questions in each area so that the project manager is confident he/she will never get a question in that area wrong.

While the primary goal of this book and Aileen's workshops is to help you pass the PMP Exam, Aileen hopes that you will also walk away as a more knowledgeable and successful project manager.

Another great reference book from Aileen Ellis
By Amazon Customer
Another great reference book from Aileen Ellis. In preparing for the PMP, I was familiar with some contract types, but had only worked with a few of them. This book helped me understand how to rapidly break down the information in a question, select a good pricing model, and set up a solution. When I took the exam, I found that her problems were representative of what was on the test. Just as importantly, each problem is set up to teach a principle of concept. Her methodology prepares you to plug and chug to get numeric answers while also teaching you to do well on conceptual questions as well.

Great mini-book!
By AFay
I think this is a great mini-book, very useful for studying for the PMP exam. The book consists of a short overview of the topic, although I think it would be more helpful to know the material before you buy this book. It's a good refresher though and then it jumps right into 50 questions and answers. For some the questions might seem repetitive but this is the best way to learn and memorize formulas. I didn't take the PMP test yet but I'm hoping this mini-book will help me as that day is arriving quickly. I hope Aileen Ellis puts out more mini-books soon to address all the topics on the exam.

Now a major motion picture from Sony, starring Jennifer Garner and Queen Latifah--Miracles from Heaven is the true story of one little girl, her journey to heaven, and an amazing story of healing. Annabel Beam spent most of her childhood in and out of hospitals with a rare and incurable digestive disorder that prevented her from living a normal, healthy life. One sunny day when she was able to go outside and play with her sisters, she fell three stories headfirst into an old, hollowed-out tree. Implausibly, she survived without a scratch. While unconscious inside the tree, with rescue workers struggling to get to her, she visited heaven. After being released from the hospital, she defied science and had inexplicably recovered from her chronic ailment. A remarkable family drama and uplifting, hope-filled memoir, Miracles from Heaven will change how we look at the world around us. Includes discussion guide.

A little girl's life, a family's faith and a mother's heart hang in the balance.
By Pirate2240
The hardest thing for any parent is watching your child suffer and knowing there isn't anything you can do to help. That is the life that Christy and Kevin Beam witnessed for years as their daughter Annabel was diagnosed with a devastating digestive disease for which there is no cure, and would likely claim her life in the very near future. So for them, they never knew when Annabel's final day would come, so they did what most parents would do, is to try and make the remainder of those days the very best they could be.

Annabel's faith in God was always strong, despite the many tests, trials, medications, surgeries and lengthy hospitals stays she had to endure, she remained as strong as any child could. She held on to her faith in God. Being the middle daughter, her life was challenging at best. Sitting back watching others enjoy food was a luxury Annabel couldn't afford. Just taking a bite of food could set her in the hospital for obstructions in her intestines, and as you know, people celebrate life with food as part of life. How hard for a child to watch people open their stockings filled with candy and have to hand it over to others to enjoy.

But the Beams would never know how a seemingly innocent day turned into a nightmare and would forever change the outcome for Annabel's life. An aging cottonwood tree on their property with a gaping hope thirty feet up in the air would trap Annabel as she fell head first into the black hole while her sisters watched in horror. Had they not been present, who knows if anyone would have found her. Annabel's claims that during the time she remained trapped into the darkness of the tree, she went to Heaven where Jesus assured her, it was not her time to come home despite her many pleas to her parents to "let me got to Heaven with Jesus where there is no pain." What follows can only be a series of miracles for the lives of the people who were a part of this life changing rescue.

I received Miracles from Heaven by Christy Wilson Beam compliments of Shelton Interactive and Hachette Book Groups for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions found here are strictly my own. I've read quite a few books about visitations to Heaven, and we may never know what exactly happened in Annabel's life, but what happened afterwards is truly miraculous. This is the memoir of Annabel's life up to the point where this accident happened and how God worked in the life of this family is bound to make even the harshest critic a believer. A truly inspirational true story of one little girl and her journey to heaven and her amazing story of healing. Well worth 4.5 out of 5 stars in my opinion.

But most amazing and heartfelt is Annabel's story that she went to ...
By butterflywriter
Miracles from Heaven tells the story of Annabel Beam told by her mother Christy. The story follows Annabel's journey through her sickness and her family's experiences along with hers. The story culminates around Annabel's miraculous healing after she is rescued from falling headfirst into an old hallow tree on the family's property. Annabel falls about two to three stories and lands headfirst. Miraculously she is pulled out with just minor cuts and bruises and a concussion. After this event as about a year passed Annabel's mother chronicles the family's journey as they realize that Annabel really is healed and no longer has the serious medical problems that she had before the fall. But most amazing and heartfelt is Annabel's story that she went to Heaven while she was 'in the tree' and that she met her Heavenly Father and Jesus.

Annabel's mother (Ms. Beam) does a wonderful job describing her daughter's journey through heart breaking sickness, a miraculous healing and the experience of seeing Heaven and meeting God. The book is written beautifully; it pulled me in from the first page and I finished it in one sitting. I would recommend it to anyone who is a Christian or to those who may be doubting your faith; this book reaffirmed my faith for me in a beautiful non-intrusive way. It's a beautiful story of a little girl and her family's faith and reaffirms the fact for me that God truly does know the end from the beginning and is always doing what is best for us even when we don't realize it.

The rest of the book was about her illness and family life which was good reading nonetheless
By KS7gal
The book was VERY well written. I was hoping for more narration about her experience in heaven. That was maybe 5% of the book. The rest of the book was about her illness and family life which was good reading nonetheless.

Glorious blondes--the famous and the undeservedly obscure
By David J. Hogan
Richard Koper, who has written very pleasing books about actresses Joi Lansing and Barbara Nichols, assembles an enormous cast of fabulous ladies for Fifties Blondes, "an illustrated look at the lives and careers of the sexiest women of the 1950s." Joi and Barbara are included, of course, as are all of the usual suspects: Marilyn, Jayne, Mamie, Kim, Diana Dors, Anita Ekberg, Cleo Moore, Beverly Michaels, and others who modeled themselves on MM. In addition, Koper includes those he describes as "sexy blondes who made a career in B-movies, from Westerns to the teenage genre," and "actresses who turned blonde during their movie careers and got sexier roles because of this hair color change."

The main part of this thoroughly illustrated book is comprised of essays describing the screen work and personal lives of 54 actresses, and a lengthy illustrated appendix that gives capsule information about another 46. Koper's thoroughness is a marvel. Even the most dedicated fans of Fifties films may not already be familiar with such knockouts as June Cunningham, Dani Crayne, Kathy Marlowe, Jill Adams, Sheree Winton, Roxanne Arlen, Gloria Pall, or the jaw-droppingly gorgeous Helene Stanton. These were not prolific actresses, but they had sex appeal and indisputable screen impact. Though obscure, they earned their places in film history.

B-movie buffs will get their fix with the inclusion of June Kenney, Mari Blanchard, the achingly pretty Kathleen Hughes, Leigh Snowden, Peggie Castle, the lovely Marian Carr, Jeanne Carmen, talented and gorgeous Merry Anders, and many, many others.

Koper neatly tells the story of every one of his subjects, combining biographical information with career narratives. Particularly significant films and roles are given special attention.

This is a handsomely designed book with a fabulous, imaginative cover and smart-looking interior pages. Each entry is headed by the actress's name typeset in the same elegant script font that's used on the front cover. The scores of photographs are well placed.

Paper stock is okay, with very slight bleed-through. Photo reproduction, though, is merely adequate. Koper has obviously gone the extra mile to assemble fabulous images, and to see so many of them looking grayed-out is mildly disappointing.

The book is sound editorially, except for some captions that misidentify a number of supporting players, e.g. Ray Walston identified as Leif Erickson, John Archer ID'd as Jack Kelly, Ross Elliott identified as Casey Adams, etc. But these are minor lapses in an otherwise nifty--and necessary--book.

If you grew up watching these actresses, or if you just dig that retro look and attitude, you'll be delighted.

How can you go wrong writing about blondes from the fifties???
By Frank Ferruccio
This is a great book. If you want to learn about all the actresses in the fifties that were trying to take the limelight off Marilyn Monroe this is it. This is a well researched and written book. The only fault is when you try to cover too many subjects you must cut short on some of the information. I am biased because this is my favorite period of movies and I enjoy reading about each and every one of these ladies. I have written two books on actress Jayne Mansfield, and feel like i could write 20 more. I would love to see a whole book written about the underated Sheree North, I am so glad that she is featured in this book. Richard is writing a book about Jayne and I cant wait to read it.On the whole, dont think about it, just buy it.

A Fun and Delectable Romp with Some Platinum and Honey-Haired Goddesses!
By Johnnery
"Classic Hollywood" archivist par excellence, Holland's Richard Koper, has delivered an extremely appealing and visually striking look at the sexiest blonde bombshells and flaxen-haired starlets that won the hearts of movie fans everywhere in the glittering and garish 1950s.

This reviewer was delighted to see not only so many of his personal favorites contained here (including Merry Anders, Mari Blanchard, Marian Carr [a GORGEOUS woman], Peggie Castle [ditto], Myrna Dell, June Kenney, Barbara Lawrence, the tragic Belinda Lee and Lila Leeds, the outrageous, and somehow, largely forgotten Peggy June Maley, Dolores Michaels, the unforgettable Barbara Payton, Fay Spain, Karen Steele, the ABSOLUTELY LUSCIOUS Sally Todd, and Kerry Vaughn), but also a few women whose work and lovely countenance had totally escaped his attention until know (including Lucy Knoch, Diana Mumby, and Sandra Wirth).

Richard Koper has plumbed the depths of several big-time and obscure photo archives worldwide to compile this knockout collection of glamourous portraits, scene stills and pin-up art, while adding his own sparkling and knowledgable commentary throughout. The end result is a winning project, lovingly compiled and rendered, and one which I hope will be just the first of many similar-themed books from this extremely talented man. Highly Recommended!!!

Blacks in the Dutch World
The Evolution of Racial Imagery in a Modern Society

Allison Blakely

Examination of the development of racial attitudes and color prejudice.

"In Blacks in the Dutch World Blakely provides scholars with a valuable record―in word and image―of the complex interaction between Dutch history and black history even as it examines, sensitively and persuasively, some of the intricate combinations of factors which are involved in color bias and its cultural expression." ―Catherine Levesque, New West Indian Guide/Nieuwe West-Indische Gids

"... provocative and exceptionally well written―a significant contribution to the history of Dutch overseas expansion." ―Johannes Postma, Journal of Interdisciplinary History

"This is a very interesting, well-written, and thoroughly researched study based on a great variety of sources." ―Choice

Blacks in the Dutch World examines the interaction between Black history and Dutch history to gain an understanding of the development of racial attitudes. Allison Blakely reveals cracks in the self-image and reputation of Dutch society as a haven for those escaping intolerance. Pervasive images of "the Moor" and "the noble savage" appear in Dutch art and popular culture; and "Black Pete" is a servant to Santa Claus in Dutch Christmas tradition. These and many other cultural artifacts reflect the racial stereotyping of Blacks that existed in the Dutch world through the time of slavery and servitude, and then freedom.

Blakely weighs the proposition that factors unique to the modern period have contributed to the creation of this racial imagery in Dutch folklore, art, literature, and religion. By viewing evolving images of Blacks against the backdrop of Western expansion, the agricultural, scientific, and industrial revolutions, and the advent of modern secular doctrines, Blakely discovers that humanism and liberalism, hallmarks of Dutch society since medieval times, have been imperfect guardians against racial bias.

Allison Blakely, Professor of European History and Comparative History at Howard University, is author of Russia and the Negro: Blacks in Russian History and Thought, winner of an American Book Award.

From Publishers Weekly
Following her ethnographic survey of Korean women (Shamans, Housewives, and Other Restless Spirits), Kendall returned to her field notes to quarry this book devoted to a single person. The aging, garrulous shaman whom Kendall calls Yongsu's Mother recounts her life and times in a flock of rehearsed, windy tales, the events now distilled and dramatized. The pattern is not exotic: denied an education by the need to help support her family; given no love by a philandering father; bearing an illegitimate child after her lover left her; pressured into a bad marriage; jailed briefly during the Korean War, etc. Even her description of her religious calling is circumspect (she refers to gods as grandfathers), and the prosaic, familiar complaints of social injustice give this a universal but impersonal air. Kendall tries for something more by acknowledging that, as observer, she has an effect on her subject. So she mixes personal with professional comments and balances her affection for Yongsu's Mother with her doubts about certain tales' truthfulness. Finally, the faithful anthropologist, hanging on the words of a lonely old woman, stands in for the shaman's absent children. The premise is not uninteresting, but nothing in the book comes alive.

Interesting study of folk culture
By C. E. Stevens
The story of "Yongsu's Mother" is compelling, informative, and thought-provoking at the same time. Yongsu's Mother clearly enjoys telling her stories, and has developed a flair for the dramatic (at the expense of accuracy from time to time it appears). I read this book for a class on East Asian folklore, and while I realize Yongsu's Mother is not the archetypal shaman, her experiences shed light on not only Korean shamans, but Koreans in general.
The most interesting part of the book, besides the stories, is Kendall's struggle to ascertain the accuracy of Yongsu's Mother's stories. Yongsu's Mother is presumably not deliberately lying to Kendall, but instead exhibiting a fundamental human paradox: the past, presumably done with and set in stone, is made fluid by the human mind and memory. The point is not that Yongsu's Mother's variations destroy her credibility, but rather that the variations give insight into her, and presumably her culture's, psyche.
This was a wonderful book ... don't be scared off by the title: this is not a book specifically about religion, but a biography about a woman who happens to be a shaman. 5 out of 5 stars.

Fascinating Reading Material, but not comprehensive
By A Customer
This is an exhiliarating account of the life of a Korean Shaman, and her interesting life in modern Korea. It is fun to read just for pleasure and it's interesting. Because it is a case study, it does not necessarily purport to be representative of all Korean Shamans, but nevertheless it teaches a lot about Korea in this century.

a good sample of life in Korea
By Wyote
I've lived in Korea for 3 years, and recently read this book as part of my exploration of the culture here. I consider this one of the better books I've read for this purpose.

Everyday I see these old people, and my Korean isn't good enough to have a conversation of any substance with them. I can communicate well enough to know that they have fascinating stories of another world, one I can barely imagine. And then, I can't understand any of the details!

Well, this is one of the stories they'd have to tell me.

As another reviewer pointed out, it's a biography, not an exploration of Korean shamanism; Kendall has written a good book on that topic, however.

The subject, called "Youngsu's Mother," was a young girl at the time of the war, so her memories are quite fascinating. Her perspectives of the family dynamics, jealousies among siblings, relationships between first and second wives, and between a new wife and her in-laws are quite revealing.

A Korean friend told me about her mother, whose mother secretly threw her school books to her over a fence so that the grandfather wouldn't know the girl was going to school. Youngsu's Mother tells a similar story.

In other ways as well I sense that Youngu's Mother's story is not too remarkable for women of her generation. But it's not a summary of Korean history or anything, just one woman's story. And it's a good one, thanks to the story-telling talents of Youngsu's Mother and Laurel Kendall.

I love this book! The projects have so much personality -- I was going to say "cute" here but you can already see by the cover photo that they are wonderful. Excellent photos and directions. I am so pleased to have added this book to my library.

but unnecessary headband), penguin (adorable)
By D. Sah
Some are cute, but not many. Maybe it's the clothes on the hippos/reindeer. Just don't find them as cute as I thought based on the cover. haha, don't judge a book by its cover. I was going to return, but I didn't buy it with prime, so I might as well keep it for the patterns, I can obviously not make clothing for the animals (scarf pictured on cover is cute). animals in the book: tall bird (with striped blue shirt), aofrementioned hippo, fawn (cute, but unnecessary headband), penguin (adorable), husky, duckling (I'd prefer it not on its feet, weird beak), awful looking panda, cute cow (minus the outfit), front cover hedgehog, "standing" fox which will never stand like that on its own, lamb (pretty cute), turtle, kangaroo with its joey in her pocket (not cute but i think it's the thin nose and tiny eyes, so easy fix, with a lame flower on the head), fox (pretty cute, not in love with the extra white wrinkles to the face- I do like the tiny legs vs large tail and head), scary looking reindeer- he looks ill), Maybe they should have stopped with book 2.

In Boys Should Be Boys, one of our most trusted authorities helps parents restore the delights of boyhood and enable today’s boys to become the mature, confident, and thoughtful men of tomorrow. Boys will always be boys–rambunctious, adventurous, and curious, climbing trees, building forts, playing tackle football, and pushing their growing bodies to the limit as part of the rite of passage into manhood. But today our sons face an increasingly hostile world that doesn’t value the high-spirited, magical nature of boys. In a collective call to let our boys be boys, Dr. Meg Meeker explores the secrets to boyhood, including

• why rules and boundaries are crucial–and why boys feel lost without them
• how the outdoors is still the best playground, offering the sense of adventure that only Mother Nature can provide
• the essential ways to preserve a boy’s innocence (and help him grow up)

Parents are blessed with intuition and heart, but raising sons is a daunting responsibility. This uplifting guide makes the job a little easier.

Review
“If you want to raise a boy you’ll be proud of, read Boys Should Be Boys.”—Dave Ramsey

“Filled with inspirational vignettes, Boys Should Be Boys empowers parents to stay involved and protect their sons’ innocence. It’s a wonderfully written and eye-opening book–a must-read.”—Neil Bernstein, Ph.D., author of There When He Needs You

From the Inside Flap
Let Boys Be Boys

Boyhood used to be a time of freedom and fun--of catching bullfrogs, playing tackle football, and roaming the woods--but not anymore. Rambunctious, high-spirited boys--healthy boys--nowadays face an increasingly hostile world that doesn't value the unique gifts of boys, that discounts their masculine virtues, and that undermines what boys need to become mature, confident, and thoughtful men. In Boys Should Be Boys, Meg Meeker, pediatrician and author of the critically acclaimed Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters, unlocks the secrets of what parents can do to restore some of the magic of boyhood and help their son become the man they want him to be. In Boys Should Be Boys, Dr. Meeker reveals:

* Why the most important factor in shaping your son's behavior isn't "peer pressure" (it's you)
* How to preserve your son's innocence (and why it's essential to help him grow up)
* Why boys need less, not more--whether it's computer games, organized sports, or lessons
* How to talk to your son--the pitfalls that moms and dads face
* Why it's not normal for teenage boys to be moody and rebellious
* Why teaching your son about virtue isn't an option, it's a necessity

Full of practical advice and examples from her own medical practice of more than twenty years, Dr. Meg Meeker reminds moms and dads that there is no greater blessing--and no greater responsibility--than raising healthy, strong young men. In Boys Should Be Boys, she shows you how.

From the Back Cover
Praise for Boys Should Be Boys

"I wore out my yellow marker highlighting the nuggets of wisdom in Meg Meeker's book. Begin with the concluding chapter on `Ten Tips for Making Sure You Get It Right,' and you'll find yourself immediately thinking about how to put these gems into practice with your own sons (and daughters!). As a father, grandfather, and character educator, I loved this book for all that it teaches us about how much we matter in the lives of our children."

--Dr. Thomas Lickona, author of Character Matters: How to Help Our Children Develop Good Judgment, Integrity, and Other Essential Virtues

"Dr. Meg Meeker issues a call to arms for anyone concerned about the character and healthy development of boys. Filled with inspirational vignettes and a stern warning against overexposure to a toxic pop culture, Boys Should Be Boys empowers parents to stay involved and protect their sons' innocence. It's a wonderfully written and eye-opening book--a must read."

--Neil Bernstein, Ph.D., author of There When He Needs You: How to Be an Available, Involved, and Emotionally Connected Father to Your Son

"Meg Meeker's new book, Boys Should Be Boys, once again demonstrates that the most important element in wisdom is common sense. Dr. Meeker provides insight, information and, ultimately, inspiration."

--Michael Medved, nationally syndicated talk radio host

An excellent guide to raising happly boys who become healthy and productive men
By Craig Matteson
As the father of three daughters, I really admired Meg Meeker's "Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters". Since I also have three sons, I was happy to read her new book "Boys Should Be Boys". Note that her first book had 10 secrets every father should know. This book has 7 secrets to raising healthy sons. I guess boys are simpler creatures.

The main thrust of the book is that boys need to explore, test their limits, and this can often lead to scrapes, bruises, dirty clothes, and even a broken bone or two. However, in our obsession to protect boys from their natural tendencies, we cosset them in a toxic environment of video games, online pseudo relationships, sexual influences from TV, movies, and the Web, and give them everything but our personal time and attention. Then we wonder why they have ADHD, stunted emotional growth, and difficulty in transitioning to manhood. The point of the book is not to blame parents, but to alert them to the dangers, to what it is that boys need, and to help them realize the extra effort that must be applied to raising their sons in order to counter the awful societal influences that are drowning our boys.

The book has twelve chapters and the first is an overview of this problem. The next seven go over the seven areas we need to pay attention to in raising our sons and grandsons. The second chapter discusses that we need to help our boys through the difficulties of peer pressure. While this is true in every generation, since our time is particularly toxic towards boys we need to be very careful about the influences and values being taught to them. The third discusses the natural tendency of boys to explore the woods, climb trees, play rough sports, and other `dangerous' activities. This is what boys SHOULD be doing. Meeker points out the health neighborhood games when teams are formed with boys of different ages and they have to work out leadership and test their limits versus the packaged formal team sports where every boy is the same age and the parents run everything including protecting the boys from winning and losing.

The fourth chapter explores the dangers of boys getting lost in the world of electronics. While there is nothing wrong with computers, iPods, or other electronic devices in and of themselves, there are very bad influences there that they need to be kept from. They also must not be allowed to become addicted to them and the influences they can find there. Spending vast numbers of hours on video games, online `relationships', and who knows what else, is a very bad thing for growing boys. They need real world friends, experiences, and skill development - especially social skills.

The fifth deals with societal animosity towards teenage boys. I know some will scream that this is not true because they are thinking of the kind of moody, depressed, and angry boy they have created and then want to fix. This kind of moody teenager is much more a media creation and now a societal reality than it should be in the real world. Yes, depression is very serious and should be treated by competent medical doctors, but if you raise healthy boys that experience healthy activities and friends, they will be much less likely to develop these problems.

The sixth tells you the true way to build self-confidence and mental health. You encourage them at all times (praise should dominate criticism ten statements to one). You should also help them, train them, and show them activities they can master. The feeling of accomplishment is a powerful emotional resource builder. And you help them get into competitive experiences and especially those where they can taste winning more than losing. Viewing themselves as winners and knowing that feeling is also a powerful force as they move through life.

The seventh chapter examines the role of mothers in a son's life and the necessity of the unconditional love a mother provides. She is his defender, will praise him when no one else will, and comforts him when he does feel defeated. The eighth is the strength a dad provides when he participates in a son's life in a real and present way. Providing an example of the virtues you want your boy to have is essential. Setting high standards for him that you model and support him developing (through encouragement, not criticism) is essential.

Chapter nine shows us why so many men are just older boys. They never made that difficult step of transitioning from being boys to men. This is a stage they must be helped through and having a role model of a good man (the father) to emulate along with providing a loving expectation that they must make the transition is critical to supporting them taking that difficult step.

Personally, I think chapter ten is one our society should pay very close attention to. Too many families stay away from Church. Oh, they may say they are of this or that faith, but they don't get involved as a family that makes their faith a part of their everyday lives. By helping your boy develop a strong faith in God you will help him build reserves of hope, an understanding of love beyond the erotic, the importance of truth, an understanding of repentance and forgiveness, and a security in the unfolding of his life. No, you can't just send them to church and think you have done your job.

Chapter eleven examines the some other core virtues we want our men to have so they must develop them as boys. These virtues are integrity, courage, humility, meekness, and kindness. Just because we want the boys to be strong and confident does not mean we want them to be blustering bullies.

Meeker ends the book with a chapter listing ten tips.
1) Know that you change his world
2) Raise him from the inside out (worry about his inner life and the outer life will follow)
3) Help his masculinity to explode
4) Help him find purpose and passion (other than being a video game master)
5) Teach him to serve (this is where Church can come in handy)
6) Insist on self-respect
7) Persevere
8) Be his hero
9) Watch, then watch again (pay close attention to what is going on in his life)
10) Give him the best of yourself (not just the leftovers)

An excellent book that I highly recommend.

SAVE OUR BOYS
By Kindle Customer
As an elementary school principal, I see boys who are being "smothered" and whose well meaning "helicopter mom" is crushing them. Our educational system is primarily female at the elementary level and these incredible educators need to know what boys are like. Boys are not disfunctional girls.

This is a great book that brings together some of the most sound advice on helping boys become men.

Boys are wonderful!!
By ANSSO
I am a mother of two boys 9 and 12 and this book is helping me have adifferent attitude. yes, we are different. Both males and females think differently, act differently, and have different needs. It does not mean one of us is better. Very informative and easy to read. I read another book by this author and I think she explains concepts in a plain and understandable way. Great book for both mothers and fathers.
