About the Author
Gershon J. Shugar is the author of The Chemist’s Ready Reference Handbook, also published by McGraw-Hill, and professor emeritus of engineering technologies at Essex County College, Newark, New Jersey. In 1947, Dr. Shugar founded a chemical manufacturing business that became the largest exclusive pearlescent pigment manufacturing company in the United States. In 1968, he was appointed assistant professor of chemistry at Rutgers University, where he taught until his appointment at Essex County College. Donald A. Drum is chairman of the technology/natural sciences division of Butler Community College in Butler, Pennsylvania. An expert on hazardous materials, he is a member of the Butler County Hazmat Advisory Team, which has been cited in more than 100 texts and professional and governmental publications. Jack Lauber is section chief of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Division of Air Resources. He is a diplomate of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and a Qualified Environmental Professional, certified by the Institute for Professional Environmental Practice. Shari L. Bauman is a research assistant and laboratory technician with the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Minerals Resources.

Dennis Shasha is a professor of computer science at New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. His previous books include Database Tuning: A Principled Approach, and two mathematical detective stories, The Puzzling Adventures of Dr. Ecco, and Codes, Puzzles, and Conspiracy.

Cathy Lazere is a freelance writer who specializes in international corporate finance and technology. She has worked as an editor at McGraw-Hill and Business International, a division of the Economist Group. Ms. Lazere holds a B.A. from Yale and an M.B.A. from New York University.

Dedicated, high-level writings. I have kept this book by my side, and recently just read the chapter of Edsger W. Dijkstra when working on some graph problems, which depicts a three-dimensional figure of this mathematician/computer scientist --- a computer science student.

good survey of 15 important individuals

Very enjoyable and entertaining book. But I've been working in the computer business for 30 years, a novice would have other opinions.

The subtitle is very descriptive -- "The Lives and Discoveries of 15 Greaat Computer Scientists".

Each is covered in a chapter, mixing together an account of how their life's journey ended up in important work.

I knew some of the stories, but this book filled in lots of others. For example, I just know of Leslie Lamport's LaTeX system, not his other work!

If you have an interest in computer science, this is a good survey of the
individuals behind some of the fundamental discoveries.

In short, I liked it

I just finished reading Out of their Minds: The Lives and Discoveries of 15 Great Computer Scientists. In short, I liked it. I wouldn't say I liked it as much as, say, Coders at Work, however, I'm glad I read it. What I liked most about it was that it contains biographies from really early computer science pioneers such as Ada Lovelace, John von Neumann, John Backus, and John McCarthy. I know computer history after 1970 really well, but this book contains a lot of stuff from before 1970.

I jotted down a few interesting tidbits while I was reading the book. However, since I read the Kindle version of the book, I only have percentages, not page numbers. Anyway, I hope you're as entertained by some of these as I was.

John Backus, who lead the team that created Fortran at IBM, flunked out of college [2%]. He had a metal plate installed in his head [3%]. He disliked calculus but liked algebra [3%] (just like me!). These days, Backus is a proponent of functional programming [7%].

John von Neumann, who helped establish the fundamentals of computer architecture, thought that creating a programming language (i.e. Fortran) was a waste of time since programming wasn't a big problem [4%].

Ada Lovelace, who was the first programmer (not to mention, a girl!), was a gambler, an alcoholic, and a cocaine addict. She died of cancer at the age of 36. She is credited with inventing loops and subroutines [5%].

Fortran only had globals. Algol, which is considered an ancestor of C, added locals, thus permitting recursion [6%].

McCarthy, who designed Lisp, was born in 1927 to Communist party activists. He had an Irish, Catholic father and a Lithuanian, Jewish mother [8%]. McCarthy is the reason Algol had recursion [11%]. (I didn't know that C got recursion because of Lisp.)

Alan Kay, who did pioneering work on object-oriented programming and helped create Smalltalk, got thrown out of school for protesting the Jewish quota [15%].

Edsger W. Dijkstra, who did influential work on a lot of early computer science problems such as concurrency, did very well in school and wanted to turn programming into a respectable discipline [21%].

Fred Brooks, who wrote "The Mythical Man-Month", wrote this about iterative development, "In 'The Mythical Man-Month' I said build one and throw it away. But that isn't what I say anymore. Now I say, build a minimal thing--get it out in the field and start getting feedback, and then add function to it incrementally. The waterfall model of specify, build, test is just plain wrong for software. The interaction with the user is crucial to developing the specification. You have to develop the specification as you build and test."

A brilliant synthesis of historical perspective and the critically revealing story of "Fear, American Style," the account explores the classics of political thought by Hobbes, Montesquieu and Tocqueville and the portrayal of evil by Arendt in order to locate fear as the decisive underpinning of contemporary liberal theory. In doing so, Robin argues for the groundlessness of, on one hand, a "liberalism of anxiety" that perceives society as a debate over communities of identity and difference with low emphasis on social cohesion, while on the other hand a "liberalism of terror" that turns to abject evil as the summum malum grounding for morality. For Robin, both of these descriptions of political realities ignore the subtle threats fear wages in our everyday lives, most notably in the workplace. The closing chapters document how the Constitution and federalism's factionalist orientation aid that everyday fear. Conceived of before 9/11, but inclusive of its results, Robin's analysis predicts that when the war on terror does end, "we will find ourselves still living in fear."

Be Very Afraid

Throughout history, leaders have made use of fear to consolidate their power. Repressive dictators of the Stalin variety inflict fear directly on their populations, while those of the Hitler variety enforce obedience by claiming threats from "others" either inside or outside the territory. In fact, this is taking place in America right this minute, though not in such a dictatorial fashion. Here Corey Robin constructs an initially fascinating intellectual history of the use of fear by heads of state, through the works of philosophers who have explored the concept. This includes informative and occasionally revisionist analyses of the long misinterpreted or forgotten writings of Thomas Hobbes, Baron de Montesquieu, Alexis de Tocqueville, and Hannah Arendt. The first two-thirds of the book take us on an educational journey through the political fear, terror, anxiety, and totalitarianism observed upon by these philosophers.

Unfortunately this book derails in the final third, in which Robin attempts to tie these concepts into current events, but misses the boat badly. The supposedly authoritative closing chapter is an anemic summary of the lack of privacy in the workplace and corporate actions against unions. Robin postulates that this phenomenon indicates political fear amongst the workforce, but fails to adequately explain how this is so, missing the structural phenomena engendered by the ideological and economic connections between many corporate leaders and politicians. More fundamentally, Robin leans primarily toward blaming political "liberalism" for modern political fear of any stripe. I realize that Robin uses the intellectual political science definition of "liberalism" in terms of active government, which is far less accusatory than the version of that term used by politicians and media pundits. But any criticism of the equally inclusive practice of conservatism (once again, not just the pundit's definition of the term) is strangely missing from the book, even in Robin's long discussions of the (mostly) rightist-fueled McCarthyism. This indicates a creeping personal outlook into a book that started strongly and objectively.

And finally, there is a catastrophic omission here, especially since Robin claims that the book was partially inspired by 9/11 and subsequent events - the current conservative administration's use of fear, especially of terrorist attacks, to drum up support not just for war but their own policies and political plans. Regardless of whether Robin (or the reader) would be for or against current political trends, at the most basic of levels this would be an immensely illustrative example of the use of political fear that is supposed to be the reason for this book's existence. Don't let this one escape you

Corey Robin began this book prior to the events of 9/11 and the politics of fear that have gripped this nation, culminating in the recent presidential election. Unfortunately, this scholarly work on the history of fear as both a political idea and a reprehensible social instrument was rather late to arrive in the recent avalanche of mostly mindless books. It has yet to be recognized for its thoughtful and lucid analysis.

Well-researched and documented by nearly 50 pages of references, it's a watershed book on this subject like no other. Seldom will you find a more thought provoking book so in tune with the times.

NOW WE ARE SIX

I have ordered this book for each of my grandchildren as they turn 6. I have one to go. I received a copy from my grandmother. My oldest daughter took a passage from this book and placed it on the wall in the kids' bathroom. So the parents do read it too. This is a book that should be read to the children until they are old enough for themselves. As this book was 1st released in the 20s and is still being published says everything.

I received this book and was read to from it by my mother when I was six. I LOVE those memories. I'm 53 now and bought this for my six year old granddaughter and when she visits, she brings it so I can read to her. It's a timeless classic and so much better than an electronic gizmo that requires to imagination or human interaction. Love it!

This book was published in 1994. I guess not much has changed since then. It is not a very good read, but the homework questions are pretty straight forward.

Not bad, but not good either

I have this book, and have read it. At the university I give lectures in dynamics of electrical machines. For the students it is the first time they expirience electrical machines. A problem you always face is what is a good book on electrical machines? I know from expirience that the perfect book propperly will never exist. In this book, I must say, there are some very good explanations on how the different motors work and their dynamics. However, for long pasages it is _not_ clear what the aim is. For a person already knowing electrical machines, it is interesting to talk about motor-windings in a general way, but if want to learn how the basic motors as a DC_motor, a induction motor and a synchronous motor works, it is nescessary to explain electromechanical energy convertion first and then attack each of the motors individually. This is where this book fails. It is a mess with some good parts inside.

This book is all about English SYNTAX. Syntax is how the English language is spoken and written (the ordering of the words into a coherent phrasing). It is easy to understand and there are exercises in every section for practice. It is the perfect book for someone studying English as a second language. For instance, if your primary language is German, you say "I am to the market going". The correct syntax for this phrase in English is "I am going to the market". This book is invaluable to anyone who struggles with ESL and who wishes to speak it properly, not struggle to be understood. I highly recommend it.

Of course the book is disfigured by its own preposterous reliance on foolish theories, that will find themselves in the dustbin of history within a generation or two. Nevertheless Parker is indeed a careful reader, even though her comprehension is undermined by things she perceives wrongly as certainties about Shakespeare. Her naive acceptance of the dating of the plays is as predictable as it is pitiable. But one can derive some useful ideas from her hard work, even though they will be unintended by the author.
