In 1993, while climbing one of the world's most difficult peaks, Mortenson became lost and ill, and eventually found aid in the tiny Pakistani village of Korphe. He vowed to repay his generous hosts by building a school; his efforts have grown into the Central Asia Institute, which has since provided education for 25,000 children. Retold for middle readers, the story remains inspirational and compelling. Solid pacing and the authors' skill at giving very personal identities to people of a different country, religion and culture help Mortenson deliver his message without sounding preachy; he encourages readers to put aside prejudice and politics, and to remember that the majority of people are good. An interview with Mortenson's 12-year-old daughter, who has traveled with her father to Pakistan, offers another accessible window onto this far-away and underlines Mortenson's sacrifice and courage. Grade 6–8—Hiking in the mountains of Pakistan in 1993, Mortenson got lost. He found his way to a small village where the locals helped him recover from his ordeal. While there, he noticed that the students had no building and did all of their schooling out of doors. Motivated to repay the kindness he had received, he vowed to return to the village and help build a school. Thus began his real life's journey. Mortenson's story recounts the troubles he faced in the U.S. trying to raise the money and then in Pakistan, trying to get the actual supplies to a remote mountain location. His eventual success led to another, and yet another, until he established a foundation and built a string of schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Mortenson manages to give the story an insider's feel despite being an outsider himself. His love of the region and the people is evident throughout and his dedication to them stalwart. The writing is lively, if simplistic, and for the most part the story moves along at a fairly quick clip. In this specially adapted edition for young people, new photographs and an interview with Mortenson's young daughter, who often travels with him, have been added.—Jody Kopple, Shady Hill School, Cambridge, MA

Important Story, But the Story-Telling is Less than Ideal

This is an incredibly important, uplifting story of an "average" American who made great sacrifices and risked his life to help others in a land far, far away. Greg Mortensen is a true hero and has done more to help eradicate the root causes of terrorism (the lack of education and/or the brainwashing of impressionable children in the guise of education) than just about everyone else. He is a great example of how much difference one person can make in the lives of thousands of others. This should be required reading for students, politicians, and others around the world.

Having said all of that, I did not like the way that Greg's story was told. The author, David Oliver Relin, is a journalist and I expected him to be more objective. It is clear that Greg Mortensen is a hero, but the author feels the need to bludgeon the reader over the head with that statement when is not at all necessary. Anyone reading the facts will come to that conclusion.

I appreciated the photos which were provided. They put a face to several of the key Pakistani and American people portayed in the book, so they were more real. The map was also helpful except that several of the towns which were discussed in the last quarter of the book weren't pictured (so it was harder to place them in geographical context).

I recommend this book to everyone, and I plan to donate to the charity which Greg established.

A MUST-READ FOR EVERYONE!

I loved this story and am very impressed with Greg Mortenson as a human being. He's pretty much everything I admire in a person. I loved his own personal story as well as the story of his career, and reading this book has given me the desire to do something altruistic myself (don't know what yet, but something).

I would like to say, however, that in places this book did become quite slow, and I picked it up and put it down many times. Although I do not agree with some of the vitriolic comments other reviewers have made about David O. Relin's writing, I think the story could've been more "lively". I struggled over whether to give this book 3 or 4 stars, and only gave it 4 due to its message.

Oh, yeah... I've heard some negative things regarding Mortenson's atheism and the fact that he (unlike his missionary parents) is not striving to "save" non-Christian souls. I think this is very wrong. His intention is to bring "basic education" to children, not to convert them to another (America's)faith! I think it is sad that this story - and this man's work -is not being appreciated by many who consider themselves to be spiritually enlightened.

a fine story, but it's not about politics or war

Three Cups of Tea : One Man's Mission to Fight Terrorism and Build Nations ... One School at a Time

I noticed this book because of its title: How to Fight Terrorism. I was intrigued, so I ordered a sample downloaded to my Kindle. It was a real page turner. Couldn't put it down. So, I ordered the book and read it.

Every now and then, politics made a brief appearance, but it was no big deal. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion. This is America, right? But the book isn't about politics.

Mortenson's story begins before 9/11 and continues after it. There's a before and after comparison that gets made. A vaguely political story gets to be a little bit about war also. But not how to fight it.

Essentially, the book is about a humanitarian mission that Mortenson makes as his life's work. How one interprets the significance of his work may be influenced by one's own political point of view.

The political point of view is what is being used to sell this book. For this reason, I'll deduct a star.

Mortenson gets nowhere in his mission over there if he was deemed to be on a political mission. He would have been rejected or even killed. So the story is being used for political consumption over here. Too bad. It's a great story in its own right. Let's not spoil it by politicizing it.

Wicked + Divine made a fan out of me

Fandemonium continues The Wicked + The Divine's exploration of religion as fandom and fandom as religion, picking up a month after Lucifer's death with Number One Fan Laura still trying to figure out if the spark of the divine she felt within herself was real or just the product of longing. There's also the little question of who set Lucifer up to die, and most of the action here is precipitated by Laura's investigation.

The art of the series continues to amaze: not only is it beautiful, it can be extremely sly in dissecting fan culture, whether it's the layout of a fangirl's bedroom, the organization of a convention hall, or the desperation of a wannabe to belong to the in-crowd. There's also a pretty spectacularly rendered Dionysian rave, seen/remembered only in flashes, as such things so frequently are.

The creators end their volume with a bang which may seem like less of a cliffhanger to those with a bit of mythological knowledge, but there's more than enough awesome here to keep this fan coming back for more.

The Wicked + The Divine remains absolutely incredible. This is a long haul, broad scope book, so be ready for lots of cliffhangers and unresolved plots. Volume two focuses on characterizing the unwieldy large cast, which is no small undertaking. Gillen manages to expertly explore the complicated mythos of his universe, all while fleshing out and humanizing his cast of characters. (Which is a good thing, because there are casualties) I am terribly impressed with Jamie McKelvie's artwork as always, but with each issue of Wicked + Divine, his sensibilities and cultivated talent become more and more apparent. This is a beautiful book, with smart, medium-bending design, and some of the best covers on the shelves.

This is not just a high point for the careers of Gillen and McKelvie, it's a high point for the entire industry. Wicked + Divine has every potential to become a Vertigo-era style classic; a multi-volumed epic that every comic shop employee puts in the hands of eager comic book newcomers.

This did not disappoint being my first graphic novel series read

The Wicked + The Divine Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 and Rat Queens: The Deluxe Edition Vol. 1 were my first graphic novels. Regarding The Wicked + The Divine, the first two volumes read in succession are totally better than most movies in the last 10 years. The first volume hooked me. The second volume totally pulled me into the lore with excellent colour and artwork. (The owner of the book needs to get that artist back asap for the subsequent volumes). I wanted to research and read more about the historical gods the pop star characters portrayed. I heard the rights to a television show has been bought or produced. Amazon really needs to consider grabbing those rights. That ending in volume two.... I didn't see that coming at all. I screamed & cried. Yes, real tears!

About the Author
B. Brett Finlay, PhD, is professor of microbiology at the University of British Columbia and a world leader in how bacterial infections work. He has been studying microbes for over thirty years and has published over four hundred and fifty articles. Also a founder of the biotech companies Inimex, Vedanta, and Microbiome Insights, Brett is Officer of the Order of Canada—the highest Canadian civilian recognition. He lives in Vancouver, BC, with his wife, who is a pediatrician, and has two grown-up kids.

Marie-Claire Arrieta, PhD, has been studying how intestinal alterations lead to several immune diseases since 2007. She has worked in the Finlay lab as a postdoctoral fellow for four years. During that time she has established herself as an outstanding researcher in the field of microbiota. Claire has combined her knowledge of microbes and immunology to lead a major clinical study on the role of the microbiota in asthma. She played a central role in building the bioinformatics techniques needed to analyze the microbiota from these clinical studies and has demonstrated that certain species of the intestinal microbiota from three-month-old children determine whether that child will succumb to asthma later in life. This seminal finding is a major reason for this book, as scientists in many other fields are now starting to realize that the early life microbiota plays a major role in diseases that present many years later.�

Must read!! Incredible knowledge and scientific revelation

This book is a must read for anybody who is thinking about starting a family or has children. It provides amazing insight into how to create a healthy environment from gestation thereafter for your children and it may not be in the conventional way we have been taught over the last several years. It also helps significantly to dispel lots of myths and miconceptions about things like vaccines which is very reassuring as a new parent. The book is for sure to shock the vast majority of people. It is a fast and easy read backed by real science and microbiology. It is time we made sense out of why our population is being plagued by diseases which never used to affect us so severely or in such high quantities.

This isn't a bad book. It makes a very critical and necessary ...

This isn't a bad book. It makes a very critical and necessary point. But it makes the same point for longer than it needs to. But the first several chapters are the more substantive and interesting. The authors have a tough writing challenge and I don't think they were fully successful. First, there are many times when allusions to scholarship or studies that support their point, but none are provided in endnotes. Second, some readers can be misled or unhelpfully frightened by language that informs you of a serious problem but provides no context on likelihood or severity. If you are a mom that had a c section, this book can easily be read to say your kid is going to be fat and asthmatic. Again, context from the authors would be helpful. Lastly, the book falls into the trope of, "when all you have is a hammer then everything looks like a nail". Towards the end of the book the reader sees is led to believe that a healthy microbiome can prevent all many of ills. While this may be true, degree and context aren't provided to say by how much or to what degree. It reads like a lit review that got too long.

All that said, it is a helpful reminder that dirt isn't bad. Pathogens are. And it's a very accessible read for those who may not want to read a book with lots of jargon.

but we love our probiotics and it's fun to learn why they ...

I found this book to be so insightful and interesting on many levels. I couldn't put it down and read it in one day! The author successfully breaks down very scientific concepts to lamen terms so anyone can understand them.

I think every expectant mother should read this book! I wasn't expecting it to be so focused on pregnancy, breast feeding and birth. I'm far past that stuff with my kids, but I still found it fascinating. One of my kids has a plethora of allergies and the book really helped me understand why and what we can do about them. I think I still yearn for more info on what I can do for older kids, but we love our probiotics and it's fun to learn why they are so effective.

I pray all moms can get the knowledge in this book from their doctors, online research or from actually reading the book itself. Hopefully this book will be on many OBGYN and pediatrician reading lists.

This book is Our Pronoic, Visionary manifesto. A wake up call that'll shake you to your core. If you aren't already doing the work to create The More Beautiful World our Hearts Know is Possible, this will startle you to begin. A brave, authentic, self reflective, visionary and revolutionary read. Daniel Pinchbeck at his best.

And to requote the words I just saw from Rob Brezsny on Facebook ".....I'm also passionate about crafting a new world that will bypass the vortex of nonsense, that will render the institutionalized mayhem defunct. I value Buckminster Fuller's perspective: "You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete."

Another favorite counsel comes from sociologist David Cooperrider: "Almost without exception, everything society has considered a social advance has been prefigured first in some utopian writing."

A guidebook for the future

In this important book, Pinchbeck explores the nuts-and-bolts of how humanity may evolve to transcend our current global crises and bring a new era in the history of our species based on love and cooperation. All the tools we need to make this shift are present today, and future generations may wonder why we took so long to embrace this better world. We have the potential to be the most important generation in human history -- the one that swung the pendulum like no other and saved the earth and our future. This book comes from that future, where its nonconventional ideas will be commonplace. Unfortunately, in the present, esoteric-minded thinkers such as Pinchbeck are too often relegated to the role of Cassandras -- prophets who no one one believes. Here's hoping that this wonderful book is a herald of an imminent shift, and people will look to it as a guide to our new world.

Ambitious work that falls short

This is a book that should be a quick read, but I found it to be laborious read. Mr. Pinchbeck is using the book as a way to bring attention to the environmental challenges the world is currently facing. He starts with premise that the society in general needs to achieve a higher consciousness levels in order to take the appropriate actions to preserve the earth.For him achieving higher consciousness means resorting to substances that create an alternate state of mind. And that is the first problem I have with his premise. Not once in his book he mentions the most natural approach of all - meditation. Of course, taking drugs to reach the alternate state is the easiest way to gain some insight and meditation takes a lot of effort and training. However, meditators can reach samadhi - the state of bliss when one can experience how everything and everyone is connected.

Author that reverts to explaining the sources of pollution of the modern world: increase in meat consumption worldwide, particularly in highly populated countries like China and India. There are many books on the market today that explain problems related to production of meat and how the meat industry significantly drains natural resources and contributes to pollution. Then, there is the whole issue of energy: production of oil, gas and other materials that create ozone layers issues. We have issues with fracking that is causing earth to change its structure that nowadays is leading to earthquakes in places like Oklahoma that has never had earthquakes before. And the list goes on and on.

His initial solution to many of these issues is the attempt to promote love. No this is a topic that I also have a problem with. Author is proponent of free love. I do not consider myself prude, but I must admit that sleeping around with unlimited number of partners in a world when new germs and viruses creep up constantly is not something I would promote no matter how consensual those relations are. There will always be people who will be proponents of such lifestyle, but I must say that even the most casual of sex can promote emotions that can be difficult to control at times. I just do not believe in free love with no consequences. Every sexual contact causes the mix of koshas (energy layers that ancient yoga texts explain in great detail). Every contact of the bodies offers the exchange of such energies that can be long lasting (yogis say it takes up to 7 years to have the smallest essence of those particles leave the body). I personally would not want anyone's emotional baggage and negative energy traces trapped in my body for such period of time. And with multitude of partners, things can only get worse.

There are ways to reverse some of the negative impacts on environments and they can be implemented right away. I am disappointed that author is not focusing on the power of the new generation - young children and teenagers whose minds are not polluted with greed, negative thought patterns, etc. These new generations need to be thought in schools on how to create compost (so we can get rid of harmful fertilizers), they should be encouraged to create community gardens that will teach new generations on how t create food, herbs and other produce in limited spaces that will promote people to be self sufficient with local food production. I wish cities and other places would be encouraged to plant more trees. Children should use work study of some sort ot paint their school rooftops white so that harmful sun rays can be reflected back into space. He completely overlooks the new generation of very young kids that can be thought in early age on how to be self sufficient. Why is it that we cannot promote vegan and vegetarian diet in schools in order to reduce meet consumption. Finally kids should learn meditation. At young age their brains are so open to new experiences and they could reach a new state of consciousness of learning how to keep their body healthy by exercising, their mind calm with breathing exercise, they can learn to eat healthy food and avoid eating junk all the time. He does not mention that at all.

Also at times I was frustrated with authors philosophical quotations. He reminded me of a person who never went to college but read everything that came his/her way without any structure. He is a self thought philosopher who hops from one thinker to another t the point of being incoherent. The advantage is that there are so many references to other authors and their works, bit the disadvantage is that he mixes those people's philosophy with their personal moral codes. Foe example, John Lennon may have been inspirational musician with a message that spread around the world, but he was a terrible father to his eldest child and first wife to the point of repulsion. Same goes for Steve Jobs who may have created Apple and iPhone but did not have a morsel of humanity towards anyone - even his own daughter, which is despicable in its own way.

Obviously, I have mixed feelings about this books. Author's intentions are good but in my opinion they are too incoherent. He statements "things have to change or we will die" will not work with people who do not have evolved brains. Most people just look for instantaneous gratification because they do not know any better. For them change is hard and we are all going to die - so why bother. Those types of individuals will never get author's point of view - which in a world we currently live in is about 50% of the population ( I am referring to US population only i f one takes into consideration the results of out latest presidential election).

About the Author

Jonathan Gennick is an O'Reilly & Associates editor specializing in database and programming titles. Prior to joining O'Reilly, Jonathan amassed some 17 years of programming and database management experience. During the latter part of his career he specialized in relational database programming, and more recently in database management. Jonathan got his start with relational database systems in 1990, first working with Ingres, and later with Digital's Rdb software. During that period he developed a fondness for SQL, and for the challenge of applying SQL creatively in ways that leveraged it's set-oriented capabilities. In 1994 Jonathan made the leap to Oracle, and is now often found writing about it. Recent projects include Oracle SQLLoader (O'Reilly & Associates, 2001); Oracle SQLPlus Pocket Reference (O'Reilly & Associates, 2000); Oracle SQL*Plus: The Definitive Guide (O'Reilly & Associates, 1999); More recently, Jonathan has made forays into other database products, coauthoring Transact-SQL Cookbook (O'Reilly & Associates, 2002) and editing Practical PostgreSQL (O'Reilly & Associates, 2002). Jonathan is certified as an Oracle DBA and is a member of MENSA and the Oracle Technology Network. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Information and Computer Science, with a Business Administration minor, from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan. Jonathan currently resides in Munising, Michigan with his wife Donna and their two children: Jenny and Jeff. Thorough book on SQL Plus

I enjoyed this book. It described features of SQL Plus that I did not even know it had. I go to this book when there is something in SQL Plus that I was not sure about (setting or parm) and I am always able to find the answer.
