About the Author
Jane McAdam is Scientia Professor of Law and director of the Andrew & Renata Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). She holds an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship, and is a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC, as well as a research associate at the University of Oxford’s Refugee Studies Centre. She has published many books and articles on international refugee law and forced migration and is joint editor in chief of the International Journal of Refugee Law. Fiona Chong is a recent law graduate of UNSW. She was the research associate to Professor Jane McAdam, undertaking research on international refugee law, complementary protection, and climate change-related displacement.

I'd like to resell it

I received this book as a gift. I'd like to resell it, but I'm afraid it's a little damaged, from being thrown against the wall.

Briefly, any argument that refuses to deal with reality is worthless. The reality is that there are 11.7 million persons in Australia's part of the world that the UN counts as refugees. This does not count people in other regions, such as the horn of Africa or the middle east, nor those people who would become refugees if they left their homes. 11.7 million is a figure that the authors themselves quote, and then simply refuse to consider its implications. They are remarkably coy about any specific policy, but they imply that any refugee who comes to Australia should be resettled in Australia. The whole book is an assault on any other policy, and by that fact an assault on reality itself. What they propose by implication is impossible. The impossibility is two layers deep. Not only is it politically impossible - the Australian people would instantly hurl from office any government that proposed anything remotely like that - but it's also plainly physically impossible. It simply takes no account whatsoever of reality.

Instead, they invoke a fantasy: what they call 'international law'. Unlike the real numbers, this is a mental construct that doesn't actually exist in the real world. Law is what can be, and actually is, enforced. If someone tries to enforce on Australia whatever provisions these authors think are law, let them try. Until then, stop talking nonsense.

About the Author

MATTHEW POTTEIGER is Professor of Landscape Architecture at the College of Environmental Science and Forestry at the State University of New York at Syracuse.

Discovering and Telling the Multiple Stories of the Landscape

Landscape Narratives consider the landscape as a nonverbal text to be read as a story of place. The reader is cautioned about developing a too-literal "one-liner" version of the story of the landscape. Instead, one should find ways to look at process and multiple readings to help the stakeholders derived a diversity of stories from the landscape itself.

The book is divided into three parts.

Part 1 "Theory" is concerned with describing just what a landscape narrative is, how meaning is drawn from the landscape and how to interpret the elements of a landscape. "Drawing from contemporary theory in literary criticism, anthropology, geography, and art, as well as significant landscape examples, [this section establishes] a theoretical framework for understanding the elements, processes, and forms of landscape narratives" (p. xi).

Part 2 "Practices" describes a set of narrative practices that can applied to projects from vernacular sites and historic preservation to public art, public participation, and sustainable design:
1. naming: identity, possession, memorial, place names (toponymy), the palimpsest of names, renaming/reclaiming places, indigenous names
2. sequencing: ordering, chronologies, period, process, spirals/mazes, stories
3. revealing and concealing: embedded/hidden meanings, secrets, suspense, transparency, process and integration, infrastructure, masking and unmasking
4. gathering: garden as allegory, fantasy/miniature landscapes, framing/controlling the narrative, condensing time, the souvenir, the collection, seasonal rounds
5. opening: "places with multiple stories shaped by a plurality of voices" as opposed to closed narratives which define a landscape (such as a themed landscape), exchanging stories, asking questions, loosening control, opening discourses, counter narratives, leaving space for the constant change of narratives (such as evolving works)

Part 3 "Stories" then shows how to apply what has been learned in Parts 1 and 2, using three examples from real life that examine the relationship between culture and nature, differences in the landscape narratives, and maintaining community traditions, and how application leads to further elaborations and process:
-"The Wasteland and Restorative Narrative" - the Arthur Kill wasteland of New Jersey and its restoration/healing through narrative process
-"Writing Home" - the preservation of Cazenovia (central New York), the designed neotraditionalism of Kentlands (Maryland), and integration of Puerto Rican community concerns in the face of a development project at Nos Quedemos in the South Bronx
-"Road Stories" - whereas the two previous chapters looked at community landscapes, this chapter looks at immense linear landscapes -roads, highways, trails- in this case the Natchez Trace Parkway and Highway 61: The Blues Highway (the Delta country of Mississippi)

Although the target audience is mostly that of educators and designers, _Landscape Narratives_ can inspire, enlighten, and teach many others (artists, writers, activists, preservationists, community members, video producers, folklorists, storytellers, etc.) how to engage with the sense of place and preserve the stories of one's own landscape. Highly recommended!

An intimate redfinitive of one's perception of space

Potteiger and Purinton team up in what in essence is a cultural geographic survey of the American Landscape. The anthropologic influence of nature is explored. Chapters deal with broad topics such as restoration ecology and urban renewal, and each is seen through the an intensely personal lens. This is a bit of a breath of fresh air, given that similar books in this genre are more about the author's personal philosophy than the true impacts of man's manipulation of nature. Fortunately the Potteiger and Purinton's lens is filtered through the eyes of real characters, characters rich in personality and chalked full of lore.
The book targets the academic but is quite readable to the layman.

Landscape for Screenwriters

"Landscape Narratives" is a source book for screenwriters searching for thematic ideas. As writer and director, it helps me to decode places as textual landscape of my stories. Inspired by the readings I have written several short films, mostly dealing with the way fictional characters react to landscapes. Chapter 4 discusses time-altering devices found in landscape: jump cut, flashback, fade etc. plot structuring techniques also used in film. It is a joy to reread this classic book as would a traveller journeying home.

I'm a sucker for vampire books

This must be a new author cause this is the first time I come across Fallon Jones and there were no reviews to guide me, but on a whim I decided to buy this novel because, what can I say, I can't get enough of vampire novels! This one doesn't disappoint. It's very readable, moves quickly, characters are well developed and 3-dimensional and by the time it ends, you'll be left wanting more. Vampire lovers, you'll get your fix. I look forward to the next installment. Hope they don't keep me waiting too long!

Vampires, Werewolves and Teenage Love!

Written by a teenager for teenagers (though adults will enjoy also), "Bite Me" introduces us to a remarkable young writer, Fallon Jones, and a winning teen heroine, Holly Hawthorne. Holly falls in love with a vampire (forever 19) who is being chased by a pack of rabid werewolves (is there any other kind?) in this fast-paced thriller that rushes at breakneck speed to a startling cliffhanger of a finish. No doubt we will be seeing more of the resourceful and dry-witted Holly as well as her very talented creator. I actually ran into Jones at MacWorld earlier this year sitting at an exhibit booth with a copy of "Bite Me" in front of her, struck up a conversation, and she signed and gave me this book. Can't wait to see what's next for Holly Hawthorne AND Ms. Jones!

Budgets are not evil.

If you're afraid of budgets, read this book. It's written in everyday English, brief, easy to read, and will remove all mystery from budgeting.

Dated, but good on basics

Here's my quicky summary of this book:
1. An overall budget predicts income, expenses, and cash flow.
2. Don't bother building a budget if you're not going to look at actual spending and try to determine the cause of any variances. If the variances come from reasonable causes--as they almost always do--the budget must be changed to reflect the new conditions.
3. Researching and documenting assumptions are the key to good--and justifiable--forecasts and budgets. Don't budget based on pie-in-the-sky sales wishes or broadly-stated percentage increases over previous periods. What's going to increase and why?
4. An expense can be estimated from current and historical information, reasonable growth projections and timing estimates. It should include the effects of current or improved controls (approval processes, expense reports, centralized purchasing, appropriate categorization, etc.).
5. Working capital matters: set aside reserves, collect accounts receivable promptly, plan inventory and capital purchases, use controls. Use a Cash Flow Statement to project cash balances and avoid running out of cash.
6. When a variance occurs, determine whether the problem is due to a false assumption--in which case the budget must be revised--or a failure of controls--in which case, processes may need to be introduced.
This book is a bit dated. It seems unaware of spreadsheets and other computerized financial management tools. Even forgiving that, its proposed forms for changes and documentation seem a bit simplistic and therefore unhelpful.
On the other hand, it's a very good introduction to budgeting, and the main message ("Document your assumptions!!") seems like a great one to learn.

recently needed to create a large budget and discovered that i bought this book in May 1990. it never leaves my desktop. great insight into creating budgets that really work. and what to watch for before they break. great examples. excellent index!

Watch Over Me

PLOT: Lucas is dead and he's been living in the house he built since he died. His home's newest owner is Caprice. She's just been dumped by her boyfriend. Lucas comforts and supports her as best a ghost can. He grows to love her. He has the chance to join the living again but at the risk of forgetting everyone he's ever known and loved - including Caprice.

PROS: The author does an excellent job of drawing you in and making you interested in the plot and characters.

CONS: It needs editing for errors. The formatting is an issue. There are spaces between the quotation marks and the first word when someone is speaking. It sometimes made it difficult to tell who was speaking. Aside from that, I found the ending to be confusing. I finished and I'm not sure of Lucas's fate.

3 - 3.5 STARS: Enjoyable read but some editing and a better conclusion are needed.

Wait! What?

The book was far from awful. I wanted to love it because of what it tried to be. Toward the ending, I thought the smoke had cleared and we had safely found our way to the other side. Nope. The ending was more than a cliff hanger. It was downright baffling, convoluted and blurry. There were too many layers, too many voices speaking at once about different things - or was this upheaval... the reader's total and complete confusion... being so unsure and unsteady... was this what the author intended? Aargh! All that being said, it was far from awful.

This was a short story and a fast read but I'm sorry to say that Ms. Mumford needs to get a better proofreader. There were a lot of grammatical errors (I'm sorry to say). The story was cute but it did seem unfinished because it ended so abruptly. However, I do feel that Ms. Mumford should continue writing because she has some cute stories waiting to be written.

Picked it up as a free eBook so wasn't expecting much - boy was I wrong!! Highly engaging from start to finish; I had a hard time putting it down. Can't wait to see how the next books evolve the world and progress the storylines!

A refreshing new take on old fairy tale tropes.

This book is quirky, a mix of fairy tale and dark fantasy, and I loved it.

The action is fast-paced, the characters are well-developed, and you really do get immersed in the story. Dragons, knights, witches, fairies, trolls--it's got it all, but not necessarily in the ways you might expect.

But the strength of the book comes from following the main character's slow descent into darkness. Will she use her black magic for good or will she eventually take the big fall?

Anyway, pick it up and you won't be disappointed.

Good pacing. Fun characters

Good pacing. Fun characters. Nice use of questioning societal rules and norms.

Particularly enjoyed Raglet's treatment of children. Unconventional to see someone who actually knows how to behave well in bad circumstances.

Since this has a "1" on the end I assume there will be more. Looking forward to them.

About the Author
Terry D. Warfield, Ph.D. is associate professor of accounting at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He received a B.S. and M.B.A from Indiana University and a Ph.D. in accounting from the University of Iowa. Professor Warfield's area of expertise is financial reporting, and prior to his academic career, he worked for five years in the banking industry. He served as the Academic Accounting Fellow in the Office of the Chief Accountant at the U.S. Securities and Exchange commission in Washington, D.C. from 1995-1996). Professor Warfield's primary research interests concern financial accounting standards and disclosure policies. He has published scholarly articles in the Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting and Economics, Research in Accounting Regulation, and Accounting Horizons, and he has served on the editorial boards of the Accounting Review, Accounting Horizons, and Issues in Accenting Education. He has served as president of the Financial Accounting and Reporting Section, the Financial Accounting Standards Committee of the American Accounting Association (Chair 1995-1996), and on the AAA-FASB Research Conference Committee. Professor Warfield has received teaching awards at both the University of Iowa and the University of Wisconsin, and he was named to the teaching Academy at the University of Wisconsin in 1995. Professor Warfield has developed and published several case studies based on his research for use in accounting classes. Theses cases have been selected for the AICPA Professor-Practitioner Case Development Program and have been published in Issues in Accounting Education.

Jerry J. Weygandt, PhD, CPA, is Arthur Andersen Alumni Professor of Accounting at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has a Ph.D. from the Univ. of Illinois. His articles have appeared in the Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, Accounting Horizons, Journal of Accountancy, and other academic and professional journals. Professor Weygandt is author of other accounting and financial reporting books and is a member of the American Accounting Association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Wisconsin Society of Certified Public Accountants. He is the recipient of the Wisconsin Institute of CPAs Outstanding Educator’s Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2001 he received the American Accounting Association’s Outstanding Accounting Educator Award.

Donald E. Kieso, PhD, CPA, received his bachelor’s degree from Aurora University and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. He has served as chairman of the Department of Accountancy and is currently KPMG Emeritus Professor of Accountancy at Northern Illinois University. He has public accounting experience with Price Waterhouse & Co. (San Francisco and Chicago) and Arthur Andersen & Co. (Chicago) and research experience with the Research Division of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (NY). He has done postdoctorate work as a Visiting Scholar at the University of California at Berkeley and is a recipient of NIU’s Teaching Excellence Award and four Golden Apple teaching Awards. Professor Kieso is the author of numerous other accounting and business books and is a member of the American Accounting Association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Illinois CPA Society.

It's a textbook. For anyone who likes reading textbooks, I commend you. But I have never enjoyed reading a textbook, whether it was for class or for fun and I love learning new things.

But it helped me with my class work and it was easy to learn the information presented in the book.

Interesting reading, moves along well.

Believable end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it story. Liked it when first read 30+ years ago, and the story holds up pretty well today, although some of the interpersonal relations seem naive now.. The basic premise of the catastrophe is flawed, as simple arithmetic will show*, but if you ignore that (or don't do the calculations), you can get caught up in the impending doom predicted by "The HAB Theory".

*Spoiler, don't read this if you don't want to know the flaw.
The Theory is that asymmetric accumulation of polar ice causes the earth to tip over about 90 degrees every few thousand years. The necessary volume of ice in this Theory is about the same as putting two very small pieces of Scotch tape on the bottom of a child's gyroscope (not on the wheel, but at one end of the axis) and expecting that mass of tape will be sufficient to make the gyroscope so unstable it'll tip over while spinning at full speed.

This is a great "apocalypse" book written before apocalypses were cool

This is a great "apocalypse" book written before apocalypses were cool. This particular book is not easy to read because it is so big (8"x12"?), but it is so hard to find, I was happy to find it at a decent price.
In summary, it is about an old man who figures out why those wholly mammoths were found frozen under tons of earth with undigested buttercups in their stomachs. No one will listen to his theory, so he goes to the utmost extreme to get the world's attention leaving his daughter to deal with the aftermath and huge job of explanation. Even though this is a fiction book, the HAB Theory makes so much sense it is scary!
Great read and well worth the trip.

I bought this book in paperback from a garage sale 10 years ago. I almost loved the cover off it then and when I got a Kindle for Christmas one year I immediately looked to see if Amazon had this wonderful book. Hurrah! They did! Without a doubt this is one of the best--if not THE best--scifi books I have ever read. The amazing thing is it offers a plausable explanation for the absolutely craziest thing that could happen to the earth. I can't say more or I will give away the plot. It is so rational in its explanations that I began to wonder if it might be true!! Now THAT is how good the book is. If there were 10 stars to give out, I would give The Hab Theory no less than 8. (Incidentally, I have read it 3 times.) Hurry to order it, Kindle or hardback. Doesn't matter which---just get it,read it, and you will enjoy it, too. (Maybe more than once, like me!)

An Ancient Delight

This, like the Iliad and the Odyssey, has been out of fashion for many decades, and that's just too bad, because these ancient epics are truly not dry, dusty, boring stories--they were the action movies of their times, and once you get into them, they're as exciting as any battle epics you've ever read or seen. At the same time, they are literature. The action is relentless and the characters all larger-than-life heroes.The story does require a little patience. It's one very long poem, written in blank verse--unrhymed, so there's no sing-song quality to it--and the rhythm of the verse is powerful: it propels the reader through the story with sonorous and powerful language. There are, naturally, some peculiar constructions forced by the rhythm; there are some ancient unfamiliar words and expressions, but you'll get used to them. Let them rhythm carry you along, as a poem should. Of course, if the latest blockbuster action movie full of car chases and explosions is your meat, maybe you won't appreciate this, but it won't hurt you to try it. And if you enjoyed sword-and-sandal epics along the lines of "Duel of the Titans," this will lift you out of your seart.--Bill Marsano is a professional writer and editor.

Ovid's Metamorphoses, Translated by J.J. Howard

This is a translation from 1807 by J.J. Howard. It's free, so maybe we shouldn't complain about weird typos and such, but there's something else that we ought to complain about: the translator's note. In it, he admits to 'chastening' the text and making Ovid's sometimes 'prurient' language more tolerable to the ever-so-fragile 19th century British sensibility.

This is an ancient classic - inspiring many other authors. It is the history of the world and this modern translation makes it more understandable for us. It has helped me greatly in understanding how people thought about God and the world 2,000 years ago.
