A Must Have For Every Writer's (experienced or not) Bookshelf!

Do you have a story in you that's dying to get out, but every time you touch the keyboard, the beginning just isn't there? Do you sit and stare at a blank screen for hours? No doubt you've turned to one of the hundreds of different "how to write a novel" books that promise to fix this problem, but still haven't found the right one...
I know how you feel. I'm a frustrated author just like you. My problem isn't coming up with ideas, it's getting them onto the page. And like you, I've tried a lot of writer help books, but the fact is most of them read like boring old textbooks. They aren't fun or interesting. Even worse, they're hard to learn from. So when I saw this book, I was skeptical. I didn't want to get burned again, but really needed help starting my novel and decided to buy it. I'm glad I did because this book is not like any other I've read!
With his humorous wit and ability to teach as if he was sitting across the table talking to you, Mr. Chase has made How to Start Your Novel an easy to follow, interesting read. Best of all, I was able to use it for ideas not only on how to start my novel (which is his book's main focus), but also on how to begin new chapters, new scenes, and how to improve the power of dialogue (which is another of my problem areas). There are also many secrets and instructions on how to bring vitality to scenes and characters that make this book deliver way more than you'd expect. The author touches on every aspect of writing, right down to the do's and don'ts, and sets up footnote links throughout the book which you can click to gain extra insight into why different strategies and techniques work or not.
With the likeness of the magician, Mr. Chase opens his bag of tricks to reveal the secrets of how to start novels, short stories, series, and more. He provides the spark you need to light your creativity fuse. Writers of every genre will benefit from this book. How to Start Your Novel is one of the best writer's guides I've come across.

You'll never look at opening lines the same way again!

As a writer, I found this to be a welcome surprise. None of the other "how to write a novel" books I've read go into this much detail about opening lines: which kind work, and which kind don't. It explains the importance of hooking readers instantly and shows you how to do it, not just in the first sentence, but how to keep them hooked through the first paragraphs until they have no choice but to buy your book. Seven case studies from the author's own fiction analyze how to construct your entire first chapter. I found this fascinating. It revealed the author's creative process and I gained a new appreciation for his fiction. For all the detail packed in, it's incredibly easy to read and understand. There's no fluff or wasted pages. The author has a friendly, conversational style that sets this book apart from some of the dry, academic books that are out there. After reading this book, you'll never look at opening lines the same way again.

Extremely Helpful & Enjoyable To Read

Very insightful material in easy to read and understand language. Jackson Dean Chase cuts right to the point, with a very whimsical side. It's not something boring, like a study class, it's actual helpful tips on just How To Begin to get that novel that you know you have in you, on to paper. Very knowledgeable and helpful, because you don't just get barraged with what you should do, you're also recommended what's best not to do. This may be a very instrumental tool, as I've got so many ideas in my head, yet when it comes to writing there's the "blank wall". Thank you Jackson Dean Chase for some fabulous assistance. I would highly recommend this to the beginner, even novice. You can never know too much!

About the Author

Jeanne H. Ballantine (far right) is University Professor of Sociology (emeriti) at Wright State University, a state university of about 17,000 students in Ohio. She has also taught at several 4-year colleges, including an “alternative” college and a traditionally Black college, and at international programs in universities abroad. She has been teaching introductory sociology for more than 30 years with a mission to introduce the uninitiated to the field and to help students see the usefulness and value in sociology. She has been active in the teaching movement, shaping curriculum, writing and presenting research on teaching, and offering workshops and consulting in regional, national, and international forums. She is a Fulbright Specialist Scholar and serves as a Departmental Resources Group consultant and evaluator. Jeanne has written several textbooks, all with the goal of reaching the student audience. As the original director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Wright State University, she scoured the literature on student learning and served as a mentor to teachers in a wide variety of disciplines. Local, regional, and national organizations have honored her for her teaching and for her contributions to helping others become effective teachers. In 1986, the American Sociological Association’s Section on Undergraduate Education (now called the Section on Teaching and Learning in Sociology) recognized her with the Hans O. Mauksch Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching of Sociology. In 2004, she was honored by the American Sociological Association with its Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award. In 2010, the North Central Sociological Association awarded her the J. Milton Yinger Award for Distinguished Career in Sociology.

Keith A. Roberts is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Hanover College, a private liberal arts college of about 1,100 students in Indiana. He has been teaching introductory sociology for more than 30 years with a passion for active learning strategies and a focus on “deep learning” by students that transforms the way they see the world. Prior to teaching at Hanover, he taught at a 2-year regional campus of a large university. He has been active in the teaching movement, writing on teaching and serving as a consultant to sociology departments across the country in his capacity as a member of the American Sociological Association Departmental Resources Group. He has written a very popular textbook in the sociology of religion, has coauthored a book on writing in the undergraduate curriculum, and for 22 years ran an annual workshop for high school sociology teachers. He has chaired the Selection Committee for the SAGE Innovations and Professional Development Awards since the program’s inception. He has been honored for his teaching and teaching-related work at local, state, regional, and national levels. The American Sociological Association’s Section on Teaching and Learning awarded him the Hans O. Mauksch Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching of Sociology in 2000. He was honored with the American Sociological Association’s Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award in 2010. In 2012, the North Central Sociological Association awarded Keith the J. Milton Yinger Award for Distinguished Career in Sociology.

Kathleen Odell Korgen is a professor of sociology at William Paterson University, a comprehensive university in Wayne, New Jersey. Kathleen has co-authored or co-edited numerous books that teach students to use the sociological tools they gain in their classes and to find inspiration from public sociologists and fellow sociology students. These books include The Engaged Sociologist: Connecting the Classroom to the Community, Sociologists in Action: Sociology, Social Change, and Social Justice and Sociologists in Action on Inequalities: Race, Class, Gender, and Sexuality. She has also written or edited the following books on race relations and racial identity: Race Policy and Multiracial Americans (forthcoming), Multiracial Americans and Social Class, Crossing the Racial Divide: Close Friendships Between Black and White Americans, and From Black to Biracial: Transforming Racial Identity Among Americans. Kathleen works as a consultant for other sociology departments as a member of the Departmental Resources Group of the American Sociological Association. She has received William Paterson University’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship/Creative Expression and the university’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Principles of Optics

This is a great book that I have used often. This is a graduate text. You should have had an undergraduate course in optics first. A typical undergraduate text that I recommend is Optics by Eugene Hecht who also wrote the Schaum's Outline for Optics. This being a graduate text you should have taken math for each of the four years of your undergraduate studies. My graduate work is in Microelectronics & Photonics and I use the book now as reference book. This book covers the theory very well; I have not found any other book that even comes close.

Optics by Born and Wolf

This book is the most comprehensive and readable book in all my books collected in optics. I specifically like the chapters devoted to geometrical optics and the rigorous treatment of diffraction. I have do doubt at all in my assignment of five stars to this book. It is no wonder that many of the scientists and engineers in NASA have the book in their possession.

About the Author
Fr. Richard Rohr is a globally recognized ecumenical teacher bearing witness to the universal awakening within Christian mysticism and the Perennial Tradition. He is a Franciscan priest of the New Mexico Province and founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation (CAC) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Fr. Richard Rohr is one of my spiritual teachers and mentors. He's been around the block a few times and has much to teach us about spirituality. Having been a Franciscan monk for many decades, he is not a "company" man. But he empowers seekers of all faiths, walks of life to venture into the fearful unknown and realize God is there at every turn, waiting for you, and waiting to be experienced. Sometimes our spiritual journey is foreign, frightening, disconcerting and down right illusive. But that's why this book was written to encourage you, that while the atmosphere of spirituality can be just light breathing under water, so everything belongs to you finding, experiencing and living in fullness of God. This is not a religious book, or a book on theology or doctrine, but it is deeply spiritual and will cause you to go deeper than you thought possible.

The person who held the aforementioned office with the tongue-twisting title was none other than Niccolò Machiavelli, who, suddenly finding himself out of a job after 14 years of patriotic service, followed the career trajectory of many modern politicians into punditry. Unable to become an on-air political analyst for a television network, he only wrote a book. But what a book The Prince is. Its essential contribution to modern political thought lies in Machiavelli's assertion of the then revolutionary idea that theological and moral imperatives have no place in the political arena. "It must be understood," Machiavelli avers, "that a prince ... cannot observe all of those virtues for which men are reputed good, because it is often necessary to act against mercy, against faith, against humanity, against frankness, against religion, in order to preserve the state." One of the most influential books of all time

The idea of "reviewing" this is more than a little silly -- it's arguably the most influential non-religious work of all time -- but I thought a few comments & historical notes might still be worthwhile.

"The Prince" was essentially the first work of political realism in Western thought -- the first work of Western political philosophy that concerned itself not with the ideal government (as Plato had done in his _Republic_) but with the practical realities of getting and holding power. To describe the impact and influence of that willingness, that first notion that conventional morality might not be the best guide to success, would be as impossible a task as trying to summarize the influence of Galileo. Napoleon is rumored to have written extensive annotations to this book; Stalin allegedly kept a copy on his nightstand. Half of Shakespeare's villains (Iago, Richard III, etc.) derive their character in whole or part from this text.

Most of this book is extraordinarily controversial, even today, yet still fundamentally difficult to argue against; there's a reason the Catholic Church kept it on the _Index Librorum Prohibitorum_ for centuries. If you're looking for food for thought, it's here.

This particular kindle edition is fairly good; the text is cleanly presented with few typographical or scanning errors, and the translator has clearly made a significant effort to present the text as accurately as possible in a modern translation, with several footnotes detailing possible alternate translations of particular words, etc. In addition to the text of _The Prince_, this edition also includes two shorter historical works by Machiavelli, "Descriptions of the Methods Adopted by the Duke Valentino When Murdering Vitellozzo Vitelli, Oliverotto da Fermo, the Signor Pagolo, and the Duke di Gravina Orsini," and "The Life of Castruccio Castracani of Lucca." ("Duke Valentino" is an alternate name for Cesare Borgia). Both additional texts are, in essence, case studies of how contemporary historical figures achieved success by acting according to the precepts which Machiavelli outlines in the main body of the text, and as such are very useful and interesting companion reads.

Introduction to basic political manipulation.

I decided to buy the Prince along with the Art of War and The Book of 5 Rings as a set, since these works have a reputation for helping people understand the ways of war and power. Of the three, I would say that the Prince holds up the best in our modern time. Machiavelli's lesson on how to gain and maintain power are fairly basic, but still important. Niccolo uses a lot of examples of other rulers, particularly from Italy, to illustrate his points. While having a working knowledge of the history of these men would certainly make the book better, he provides enough detail to get his point across without it.

One note: After the introduction, the author of the forward includes a lengthy sample of his own fiction book 'The Malice of Fortune', that takes up half the book before you reach the Prince. I see it more as bonus content, but just know you'll have to flip a lot of pages to get to what you bought the book for.

Machiavelli's classic, now for Kindle

This review is of the (currently free) Kindle edition of The Prince.

As others have stated at much greater length and with far greater eloquence, this is one of the most important books of political thought and philosophy ever written, and a truly timeless classic. As such, the fact that it's available for free on Kindle makes this a terrific deal, worth every single penny and many more. All the usual conveniences of Kindle applies here: very fast to download via Whispernet, the handiness of being able to annotate and highlight important passages, bookmarking pages you want to reference again later, etc. The slickness of the Kindle format and capabilities plus the inherit worthiness of the book itself easily nets 4 stars.

It's been about forever since I last read The Prince, plus I don't really know anything about Italian, so I'm not really fit to talk about the quality of the translation. Suffice it to say that it's a fairly easy book to read and make sense of, but again I can't speak to how true this particular edition is to its source material.

Unfortunately, there are a few problems with this edition of The Prince that need to be mentioned, and which in the end detract a little from the overall score. The first and biggest is in the formatting of the book. In short, it looks like a plain-text notepad file converted into a Kindle book; there's no navigable Table of Contents or chapter breaks as with most commercial Kindle books, and the book itself flows from the title page almost directly into the background about Machiavelli and then from there straight into The Prince itself, with scarcely a break in the text to mark the transition. For someone well versed in The Prince this probably isn't much of an issue, but for the more casual reader it's a little distracting and may confuse some. The other problem is more one of personal preference, which is that there's no annotations alongside the text to put specific lines into context. Again, for someone well versed in Machiavelli's life and the real-world examples he uses throughout The Prince, this probably isn't a significant issue. For more casual readers, having a little context for the examples he uses would be helpful from time to time.

In the end, you get what you pay for, and as the above-reviewed version of The Prince was free, I can't complain too much. It's brilliant, it's relevant, and it's very convenient to have on my Kindle. What more do you want for the price?

This is a facinating book. Written by John Haywood, who was a judge in NC. At retirement he went of to follow his love of history. The book includes a lot of mysteries and native American explanations of some of those mysteries.

It's basically the original book photocopied onto the pages of a new book. It is clear, readable, and helps paint a picture of not only the Native history of Tennessee but also how settlers viewed that history. Very fascinating.

'This lovely book is clearly written by someone who has been immersed in reading faces all her life and who spent twenty years before writing it, studying further from Chinese medical and other texts and from family members. It clearly lays out all the theories and principles of face reading, mostly relating to understanding personality ( but also in a final chapter to medical diagnosis) and illustrates these with numerous black and white and colour photographs.

This is simply the best book on face reading that we have seen, and if the subject fascinates you, you just have to get it.'

the real expert

I have read most books on face reading and this book immediately shows the real wealth of knowledge and sensibility of the author. A lot of people take a seminar and write a book, this is just the opposite. The author shows experience and an open heart, I know she is the teacher to a lot of face readers like Jean Hanner so If you want to know the real source for a lot of what is out there this is a most and Lillian is the best.

This book is full of fascinating information about reading the lines, bumps, and configurations of the face. It is based on ancient Chinese tradition and will intrigue you enough to get out your mirror. Putting it into practice will require re-reading the book but you will never again look at someone's face the same way. Amazing!
