We now live longer today than at any time in history. In the UK, more people are aged over sixty-five than under sixteen and by 2050, over a third of the developed world will be over sixty. How should we deal with this phenomenon? What are the scientific reasons for ageing? And can - or should - we prevent it? Lewis Wolpert, distinguished biologist and octogenarian, explores the scientific background and the implications of our ageing population. In this engaging investigation, he tackles every aspect of the subject from ageism to euthanasia to anti-ageing cream and, through it all, tries to better understand his own ageing. Witty, frank and often inspiring, Lewis Wolpert is the perfect guide to 'looking very well'.

ig you are old, getting older, or think you might get old some day, this should be your book
By Gulf sailor
OK, I am sixty one and denial no longer seems to work. My wife and I were in England this summer and picked this up in a Hampstead bookstore. I found it informative and cautioned me about many of the strange changes happening in my life, as well as those yet to come. So much for 39 forever. The book is very readable, funny, supremely informative and practical. Louis Wolpert is a biologist and a very lively 80 years old himself; he knows of which he speaks. I am buying three more copies for my siblings. My poor brother turns 60 today, so I think I will give him my own copy.

A sober yet hopeful look at the problems of 'old age'
By Shalom Freedman
Louis Wolpert is in Britain a well- known biologist, and broadcaster. He wrote this book when he was in his early eighties. His approach is factual and informative. He gives a comprehensive survey of the problems of aging. He provides the latest scientific data on research directed toward extending life. He also discusses the problem from a historical and cultural perspective. He too looks at the overall human demographic which points to large increases in the percentage of elderly in the global population. He also discusses the painful question of the end game. He occasionally cites literary sources and this enriches the text.
There is nothing revolutionary or earth- shaking in the book. It is a very competent piece of work but recycles much of what is known. It is also very much directed to a U.K. audience as its discussions of the welfare- system and how to manage financially in Old Age focus on U.K. realities. I would recommend this book to those who wish to get a very clearly written and factually based account of the present understanding of Old Age.
A fine book.

A Crack in Creation: Gene Editing and the Unthinkable Power to Control Evolution, by Jennifer A. Doudna, Samuel H. Sternberg

A trailblazing biologist grapples with her role in the biggest scientific discovery of our era: a cheap, easy way of rewriting genetic code, with nearly limitless promise and peril.

Not since the atomic bomb has a technology so alarmed its inventors that they warned the world about its use. Not, that is, until the spring of 2015, when biologist Jennifer Doudna called for a worldwide moratorium on the use of the new gene-editing tool CRISPR—a revolutionary new technology that she helped create—to make heritable changes in human embryos. The cheapest, simplest, most effective way of manipulating DNA ever known, CRISPR may well give us the cure to HIV, genetic diseases, and some cancers, and will help address the world’s hunger crisis. Yet even the tiniest changes to DNA could have myriad, unforeseeable consequences—to say nothing of the ethical and societal repercussions of intentionally mutating embryos to create “better” humans.

Writing with fellow researcher Samuel Sternberg, Doudna shares the thrilling story of her discovery, and passionately argues that enormous responsibility comes with the ability to rewrite the code of life. With CRISPR, she shows, we have effectively taken control of evolution. What will we do with this unfathomable power?

A must-read popular science book
By Malvin
“A Crack in Creation” by Jennifer A. Doudna and Samuel H. Sternberg is simply a must-read popular science book. Professor Doudna led the research team responsible for the breakthrough gene editing technology, CRSIPR. This important book promises to stimulate informed conversation about the new, unprecedented powers of creation that have recently been placed in human hands.

The book is divided into two sections. Part I: The Tool documents the discovery process that led to CRISPR. No doubt, the author’s painstaking reconstruction of events will prove immensely valuable to students and scientists. The authors have a knack for explaining complex concepts in an accessible manner. Still, for generalists like myself, I found myself skimming through sections because the science (for my taste) trends towards the arcane.

Part II: The Task talks about the potential uses and abuses of CRISPR. The authors envision useful systemic applications including immunotherapy to fight disease, the purposeful engineering of more productive crops and livestock, and so on. Human germline applications, of course, are more problematic. The authors are sympathetic to the cause of eradicating genetic conditions but are concerned about unwise experimentation (e.g., designer babies). After reading the author’s reasoned thoughts and perspectives, I feel much better informed and engaged. There is no doubt that gene editing will be widely discussed and debated for many years to come.

I highly recommend this excellent book to everyone.

A Well Told Journey of Scientific Discovery That Equals "Microbe Hunters" and "The Double Helix"
By Ira Laefsky
Not since "Microbe Hunters" by Paul de Kruif Microbe Hunters and "The Double Helix" by Watson and Crick The Double Helix: A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA has the excitement of discovery in the biological sciences been expressed and made vivid for lay readers in the way that Douda and Sternberg's account of their research into Bacterial Immunological Systems and application of CRISPR/CAS9 for Gene Editing displays. This easily understood scientific autobiography documents much of the research that led to one of the most important discoveries in molecular biology and genetic engineering in recent decades. The clear prose and simple diagrams which document CRISPR and its mechanisms make clear and make exciting this journey of scientific discovery,

The advent of Khan Noonien Singh is nigh : jaw dropping technology
By Eliot Rosewater
A CRACK IN CREATION is written in the voice of the main author, Jennifer A. Doudna, who is one of the lead researchers into the CRISPR gene editing techniques. The co-author, Samuel H. Sternberg, also a leading expert in the field, is literarily in the background.

Though gene manipulation and the editing of DNA is not relatively new technology, the CRISPR (Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats) techniques are notable for being inexpensive and incredibly accurate at editing genomes. If you Google "CRISPR" you will retrieve ad based links to companies that are already selling inexpensive CRISPR editing kits and customized sgRNA (single guide RNA) which is used to make specific modifications.

The first part of the book, "The Tool," is a fairly dry explanation of the development and function of CRISPR. If anything, the author may suffer from being too familiar with the topic leading to this being the least accessible part of the book. Scientific dilettantes (like myself) should soldier through the array of genetic terminology and themes, but the reward is a deeper understanding of the actual technology. Dr. Doudna could benefit from expanding on the personal aspects and interactions with other players in the field. There are hints of a deeper and more fascinating human story in this first part.

It is the second part of the book, "The Task," that the authors use to explore the potential of CRISPR, and the related ethical issues that, in the past, were more theoretical. Earlier genome editing techniques have required more extensive laboratory infrastructure and were thus self-limiting in their impacts (though the impact of genetic manipulation is not trifling). Dr. Doudna and Dr. Sternberg emphasize the ethical questions particularly surrounding the editing of the germline, i.e., human embryos. Humans have always manipulated their environment, and sometimes to our own detriment, e.g., global climate change. With CRISPR, the authors posit we have the atomic bomb of gene editing tools, and that we should approach ethical concerns about research in the same manner. As with nuclear energy, the potential benefits are astounding. As with nuclear energy, the potential threat is also astounding.

The title of this review, "The advent of Khan Noonien Singh," refers to the iconic character from the Star Trek universe, who is the leader of a genetically manipulated crew of super humans. The authors have convinced me that creation of designer humans, such as Khan, is no longer just possible but probable. In one section of the book they discuss being approached by a biotech firm for assistance in creating embryos that are designed to avoid known genetic diseases. Though the proposal is prophylactic in nature, they make the case that it is obvious that editing the genome for desirable traits (strength, intelligence, gender) involves the same inexpensive CRISPR techniques.

The call in this book is for more involvement by the world community beyond the sphere of the scientific experts. There are no easy answers, and the second part of the book involves raising the questions and the importance of involving a wider universe of stakeholders. Stakeholders = human beings.

This book easily stands alongside The Double Helix: A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA by James Watson.

The NOTES section at the end is one of the best I've seen. Not only does it give the page number of the footnote and citation to more in depth information, it also includes a snippet of the phrase which originally references the note. E.g., Page 46. . . . the institute had over a thousand employees producing tons of phages per year: Carl Zimmer, A Planet of Viruses (Chicago : University of Chicago Press, 2011).

This is a must read. Period.

Comprehensive

On my second read. I had the old edition and this is definitely an easier read. Has everything the general radiologist needs to know on MSK.

from PGY-4 diagnostic rads
By HANS BAKKEN
preparing for Core exam, and this book is easy to read and appears very high yield. It is improved over the previous version, there are more images. Downside is the "case review" accompanying this text has not yet been updated. Also I feel that all the new Requisites seem physically "cheaper" than the old editions (thinner paper, less robust book construction). Perhaps this is the industry trying to push me to the electronic version? I am old (second residency here) and simply CAN'T STUDY FROM AN IPAD.

Poor image quality
By Amazon Customer
I'm a rad trainee and heard great things about this book but the poor print quality is a let down. I have returned the book for another copy and it is the same washed out pictures which look like they've all been windowed badly, not a good way to learn. Very poor standard compared to the ultrasound requisites which has excellent image contrast.

American Arsenal: A Century of Waging War, by Patrick Coffey

When America declared war on Germany in 1917, the United States had only 200,000 men under arms, a twentieth of the German army's strength, and its planes were no match for the German air force. Less than a century later, the United States today has by far the world's largest military budget and provides over 40% of the world's armaments.

In American Arsenal Patrick Coffey examines America's military transformation from an isolationist state to a world superpower. Focusing on fifteen specific developments, Coffey illustrates the unplanned, often haphazard nature of this transformation, which has been driven by political, military, technological, and commercial interests. Beginning with Thomas Edison's work on submarine technology, American Arsenal moves from World War I to the present conflicts in the Middle East, covering topics from chemical weapons, strategic bombing, and the nuclear standoff with the Soviet Union, to "smart" bombs, hand-held anti-aircraft missiles, and the Predator and other drone aircrafts. Coffey traces the story of each advance in weaponry from drawing board to battlefield, and includes fascinating portraits of the men who invented and deployed them -Edward Teller, "the father of the hydrogen bomb", Robert Oppenheimer, head of atomic bomb design at Los Alamos; Curtis LeMay, who led the fire-bombing of Japan; Herman Kahn, nuclear strategist and a model for Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove; Abraham Karem, inventor of the Predator, and many others. Coffey also examines the increasingly detached nature of modern American warfare- the ultimate goal is to remove soldiers from the battlefield entirely- which limits casualties (211,454 in Vietnam and only 1,231 in the Gulf War) but also lessens the political and psychological costs of going to war.

Examining the backstories of every major American weapons development, American Arsenal is essential reading for anyone interested in the continuing evolution of the U.S. defense program.

Review

"Patrick Coffey s American Arsenal: A Century of Waging War offers a brisk account of the development of key weapons and technologies, from poison gas to drones, in that arsenal. Many of his stories are fascinating, gruesome, even lurid, and some are largely unknown." --Los Angeles Review of Books

"Coffey delivers an interesting book that introduces the general reader to a little-known perspective on military history." --Publisher's Weekly

Praise for Patrick Coffey's Cathedrals of Science
"Weaving together the lives of the leaders of modern chemistry, Coffey shows how fights over priority, backstabbing, cronyism, and grudges shaped the history of chemistry just as much as the actual discoveries. It is an effective antidote to the bromide that science is the work of selfless, Spock-like automatons."--Books and Culture

"A gripping page-turning narrative that elegantly combines popular science with a serious history of science."--Chemistry World

"This superbly crafted book traces the intertwined careers of scientific Titans whose work, despite human failings, created major parts of the conceptual edifice of modern physical science. It is a grand saga, as illuminating for our era as the Canterbury Tales are for the age that erected great masonry cathedrals."--Dudley Herschbach, winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry

"[Coffey's] book zeroes in on how the military has helped to transform America, from the growing pains of World War I up through today... impressive in its focus. With a 'behind-the-scenes' approach to many war-related and political topics and extensively researched... it brings fresh perspective and information to a topic that is sometimes overlooked. " --Tony Bandy, History Writing with Tony

Engrossing, disturbing, and very readable
By Richard J. Leskosky
Patrick Coffey’s well-researched and well-written book provides an enlightening and unnerving look at the technology and the politics of American weaponry over the last century (from submarines and poison gas in World War I to today’s drones). Inventors, bureaucrats, scientists, politicians, and military brass are seen maneuvering here in pursuit of often conflicting goals and ideals as they seek to develop and deploy (or prevent the deployment of) various fearsome weapons systems. Coffey gives an unflinching account of the horrific efficacy of those weapons (or their potential, in the case of those that were developed but, like poison gas, not used) and a behind-the-scenes look at the refinements and the occasional literal and figurative misfires in their development. Those missteps occasionally introduce a wry undertone, such as when Coffey describes the Army’s disastrous tests in 1943 of a plan to attach incendiary bombs to bats and release them over Japanese cities. Readers who know about America’s armaments and their use only from government press releases or other sanitized accounts will find particularly sobering, among other revelations, just how much more destructive American fire bombings were on Japanese cities than the atomic bombs dropped there and the ever-expanding definition of strategic targets that translates into lost civilian lives. Despite these grim details, though, American Arsenal is eminently readable and engrossing.

Interesting and well-written.
By James Colbert
This book has a wealth of fascinating information for anyone (like me) who is interested in the subject matter, and it presents that information in a well-written narrative spiced with wry observations on the often perverse actions of the soldiers, scientists and politicians who have guided (and sometimes misguided) our nation's military decisions. Anyone with an interest in the military history of the 20th century will enjoy this book.

An Excellent Review of 20th Century Weapons Systems
By Bernard Percarpio
For WWI and WWII history fans, this book adds an essential element to these complicated conflicts. The chapters on the development of the Norden bombsight and Napalm are especially detailed and complete. The author excels, however, in his description of the people behind these weapons systems. Curtis LeMay is shown to be less the crazy general, as depicted in the popular press of the 1960's and 1970's and more of a warrior dedicated to winning any conflict. Glenn Seaborg and Edward Teller are revealed to be intelligent men but far too interested in celebrity and recognition. Patrick Coffey has written a fine addition to any military history collection.

The Nix: A Novel, by Nathan Hill

A Nix can take many forms. In Norwegian folklore it is a spirit who sometimes appears as a white horse that steals children away. In Nathan Hill's remarkable first novel, a Nix is anything you love that one day disappears, taking with it a piece of your heart.

It's 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson - college professor, stalled writer - has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn't seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she's reappeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the Internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high school sweetheart. Which version of his mother is true? Two facts are certain: She's facing some serious charges, and she needs Samuel's help.

To save her, Samuel will have to embark on his own journey, uncovering long-buried secrets about the woman he thought he knew, secrets that stretch across generations and have their origin all the way back in Norway, home of the mysterious Nix. As he does so, Samuel will confront not only Faye's losses but also his own lost love and will relearn everything he thought he knew about his mother and himself.

From the suburban Midwest to New York City to the 1968 riots that rocked Chicago and beyond, The Nix explores - with sharp humor and a fierce tenderness - the resilience of love and home, even in times of radical change.

This is something special. A great big read from a great big talent with a great big heart.
By RobynJC
Samuel is an underachieving assistant professor of literature at a nothing college outside Chicago who dislikes his students, spends way too much time playing an online fantasy game, got a huge advance for a novel he never wrote, and is pining for the girl he loved when he was eleven. His life is stalled out big time, but he is dragged out of stasis when his estranged mother, who abandoned him when he was eleven and has never been heard from since, makes national headlines for throwing rocks at a Presidential candidate - she is the Packer Attacker! Through a ridiculous series of events, Samuel is tasked with writing his mother's life story, and is forced to investigate her life since leaving him. The Nix is the story of how mother and son came to where they are -- and where they might go from here.

But really, this basic plot description does not begin to do this book justice. Nathan Hill has a dazzling imagination, and the feats of writing that he performs are an absolute joy to experience. He writes one chapter from the POV of a gaming addict, an internal stream of consciousness in which the character makes elaborate plans to quit gaming, but talks himself out of it. This is ten pages, one paragraph, and it is absolutely mesmerizing -- funny and insightful and sad, about the stories we tell ourselves. Another chapter is just a conversation between Samuel and the lawyer who is representing his mother, nothing but dialogue, and it is hysterical. Another chapter is a Choose Your Own Adventure mini-bookl explaining how Samuel's relationship with a violin prodigy came unraveled, because Samuel does not choose wisely. Another chapter is...you get the picture.

The story of Samuel and his mother is a jumping-off point for Mr. Hill to write about a huge range of things: let's see, he covers second-rate higher education, gaming addicts, the ravenous news media, music prodigies, child abuse, child abandonment, thwarted love, the 1960s counter-cultural revolution, Allan Ginsberg, Walter Cronkite -- at one point, no joke, there is a sequence inside the head of Walter Cronkite where he imagines himself as a bird flying above the Chicago riots... and I still haven't skimmed the surface of all the things this book is really about.

And if I have a criticism, that's what it is. This book is about so many things, it is so wildly ambitious and imagined, that at times it seems to get a bit out of control. Around the time Walter Cronkite was imagining himself as a bird, I was thinking, hmm, a little editing might have helped some. Reading The Nix feels a bit like watching a wildly talented thoroughbred run -- and win -- its first race. You see the immense beauty of the animal, the strength, the speed, it easily outpaces the rest of the field, you know you're at the beginning of something special. Yes, the horse is a little wild, a little undisciplined, maybe veers around the track a bit, maybe tires at the end, but my gosh. You want to turn to everyone around you and say "Did you SEE that?"

And one last thing. So many books these days are being written with a lot of technique, but they're lacking in heart. What makes this book special, to me, is that Mr. Hill's heart is as generous as his talent. He writes fantastic sentences, he has astonishing craft, but beyond that, he has true empathy, compassion and hope, He sees the insanity of the world, but he also has hope for our future. And I have tremendous hope for his.

Refreshingly different
By Donna S. Meredith
Some chapters in this novel were truly outstanding. The one where a professor listens to a college student try to justify why she cheated on a paper is roll-on-the-ground funny. Toward the end, I confess to skimming some of the chapters from law enforcement's point of view. I didn't think they added to the story and wish the author hadn't constructed those parts of the book that way. Nonetheless, the story was so original and entertaining as it captured the angst of the Vietnam War era, I highly recommend it.

One unusual style element the author employs is long--really long--sentences. Many times this adds to the humor of scenes.

Best book of 2016 for me
By J. Strimer
This is my goodreads review:
It's been awhile since I've been as affected by a book as I am by The Nix. Jason Sheehan reviewed the book for NPR, and captures some of my feelings:
http://www.npr.org/2016/08/31/4901018...

"After 10 pages of Nathan Hill's debut novel, The Nix, I flipped to the dust jacket. I wanted to see what the author looked like because I was thinking to myself, Jesus, this guy is gonna be famous. I wanna see what he looks like. At 50 pages in I smiled when my train was delayed — a few extra minutes to read about Samuel Andresen-Anderson, the assistant English professor and gone-nowhere writer who'd failed to live up to a tiny bit of early promise. At around 100 pages, Samuel is in 6th grade — lonely, panicky, a crier at the least little thing — and I know I'm going to miss anything like a reasonable bedtime. At 200, it is stories of Samuel's mother that keeps me turning pages: A teenager in 1968, driven, tightly wound. It is the sketched background of the woman who will abandon Samuel at 11 years old and wreck him in all the million ways that such a thing will wreck a delicate boy; the woman who will float back into his life years later on cable television — briefly notorious for throwing a handful of rocks at a conservative republican presidential candidate in a Chicago park....The Nix is 620 pages long. My last dog-ear is on page 613. It's nothing important. Just a funny story told by one character to another about the Northern Lights and the burden of expectation. It is lovely in precisely the same way that a thousand of Hill's other paragraphs are lovely — these looping, run-on, wildly digressive pages which, somehow, in their absolute refusal to cling together and act like a book, make the perfect book for our distracted age."

This book fits our time like David Foster Wallace was able to do with Infinite Jest, and Nathan Hill has that same brilliant, challenging writing style, on top of a satirical eye that covers the range of our modern world's obsessions. I have so many sticky notes in the book that it's hard to choose, but here are some of the lines that will stay with me, as he skewers everything from politics and journalism to materialism and obsessions. Mainly, all I can say is READ THIS!! :-)

He opens with one page of the old Buddhist tale of the blind men and the elephant--which is woven so creatively into the book. These characters--especially the mother, Faye, and her son, Samuel--are all "blind", in the way of humans to be limited in our perceptions of both life and ourselves. Faye says, on p. 565:
"In the story of the blind men and the elephant, what's usually ignored is the fact that each man's description was correct. What Faye won't understand and may never understand is that there is not one true self hidden by many false ones. Rather, there is one true self hidden by many other true ones. Yes, she is the meek and shy and industrious student. Yes, she is the panicky and frightened child. Yes, she is the bold and impulsive seductress. Yes, she is the wife and mother. And many other things as well. Her belief that only one of these is true obscures the larger truth, which was ultimately the problem with the blind men and the elephant. It wasn't that they were blind--it's that they stopped too quickly, and so never knew there was a larger truth to grasp."

Parts of the book make my heart ache--for the abused boy Bishop, for the stinging descriptions of what went on at the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago, for my favorite character Pwnage--lost in a video game since real life has become unbearable.

But also, at times I was laughing out loud and saying, "Right on!" when Hill uses satire as viciously as Vonnegut and Twain ever did. Here, on p. 65, he nails road rage as Samuel explains why he hates to drive in Chicago:
"The closer he gets to the city, the more the highway feels malicious and warlike--wild zigzagging drivers cutting people off, tailgating, honking horns, flashing their lights, all their private traumas now publicly enlarged.

On p. 107, he captures all the inane, ludicrous qualities of a shopping mall, beginning with a long list of meaningless merchandise:
"With its hundreds of stores and booths, the mall seemed to make a simple promise: that here you would find everything you needed....the mall's overwhelmingness was meant to replace your imagination. Forget trying to dream of your desires; the mall had already dreamed them up for you."

On p. 530, he captures the despair of Walter Cronkite, trying to make sense of what is happening in Chicago in 1968. Even though Hill says he wrote the political sections a few years ago, the chilling timeliness of these lines is disturbing:
"It's a chilling thought, that politicians have learned to manipulate the television medium better than the television professionals themselves. When old Cronkite first realized this was happening he imagined the kinds of people who would become politicians in the future. And he shuddered with fear."

I could go on and on--but I want to get at the reason for the unusual title. At the beginning of chapter 5, Faye explains the old myth of the Nix from her Norwegian heritage--a beautiful white horse that allows a child to ride it, and then the child wants to show off to others--and "when they most wanted to be celebrated for it and thus felt the most vanity and arrogance and pride" the horse jumps off a cliff and are drowned. Then she tells Samuel:
" 'The Nix used to appear as a horse,' she said, 'but that was in the old days.'
'What does it look like now?'
'It's different for everyone. But it usually appears as a person. Usually it's someone you think you love.'
Samuel still did not understand.
'People love each other for many reasons, not all of them good,' she said. 'They love each other because it's easy. Or because they're used to it. Or because they've given up. Or because they're scared. People can be a Nix for each other.' "

I must tie this up, but need to mention two conventions of the book that worked so well, imho. Samuel loves "Choose Your Own Adventure" books as a child, and one entire chapter is titled "You Can Get the Girl" and is written in the format of those books. The other is the chapter about Pwnage, which is 11 pages of one sentence, and it works powerfully.

Because I'm a grandma who plays Wizard 101, Pwnage's escape into a video game held special poignancy for me (in gaming, "Pwn" means you "own", or have beaten, an opponent. (And if it seems strange that a 76 year old would know that tidbit, it is! :-) This whole chapter is his attempt to break free of the addiction. Just read it straight through to get the total effect.

I'll conclude with some of the blurbs from Amazon:

"A mother-son psychodrama with ghosts and politics, but it’s also a tragicomedy about anger and sanctimony in America. . . . Nathan Hill is a maestro.” —John Irving

“A fantastic novel about love, betrayal, politics and pop culture—as good as the best Michael Chabon or Jonathan Franzen.” —People

“It broke my heart, this book. Time after time. It made me laugh just as often. I loved it on the first page as powerfully as I did on the last.” —Jason Sheehan, NPR.org

“Hill has so much talent to burn that he can pull of just about any style, imagine himself into any person and convincingly portray any place or time. The Nix is hugely entertaining and unfailingly smart, and the author seems incapable of writing a pedestrian sentence or spinning a boring story. . . . [A] supersize and audacious novel of American misadventure.” —Teddy Wayne, The New York Times Book Review

“Irresistible. . . . A major new comic novelist . . . . Hill is a sharp social observer, hyper-alert to the absurdities of modern life. . . . his enormous book arrives as one of the stars of the fall season. . . . readers will find this novel. And they’ll be dazzled.” —Ron Charles, The Washington Post

Saxony in German History: Culture, Society, and Politics, 1830-1933 (Social History, Popular Culture, and Politics in Germany)From Unive

During the hundred years examined in this volume, ordinary Germans discovered a new and powerful attachment to the nation. But throughout this period, national loyalties competed with preexisting loyalties to the locality and the region. The resulting tension made it difficult for Germans to assign clear priorities to one kind of symbolic attachment over another.
Focusing on the east German state of Saxony, the contributors to this volume refuse easy resolution of that tension, seeking instead to illustrate how local, regional, and national cultures commingled, diverged, and influenced each other over time. By considering both the erosion and the persistence of traditional identities and regional boundaries, these essays help to restore an appreciation of regional "ways of seeing," suggesting they really did matter--in their own right, and for the nation as a whole.
Topics considered include the expansion of a German reading public, Jewish emancipation, the formation of socio-moral milieus, working-class leisure, the expansion of the public sphere, the rise of consumer co-operatives, gendered attempts to fashion the "new" liberal man, and degradation rituals in the 1920s. Presenting to English-reading audiences the fruits of cutting-edge research conducted in Saxon archives since 1989, the contributors offer innovative ways to reassess the larger sweep of German history.
This book serves as a how-to guide for the study of any region in history. Beyond its primary appeal to European historians, it will also speak to students and scholars in comparative politics and sociology.
