Great book! I used mine to create a mini poster wall. Also I bought mine used and it came with a 1983 issue of Penthouse (even though this book was published in 2009) but i'm not complaining..

Pseudo Hippie and Post Hippie Fluorescence

In my 1967 UC Berkeley apartment hung two blacklight posters: one of an Escher drawing and the other of a dazzling distant city skyline overseeing an orange and green landscape. I had hoped that this book would include similar fluorescent posters from 1966 to 1968, the early innovative days of this art when mind and alternative realities were subjects of exploration. Instead, the book is heavy on early 1970 shallow, pseudo-hippie and hippie-inspired pop works and later ever more garish fantasies. A couple early Crumb works, however, are included. Several other posters---one based on the 19th-century art and philosophy of Geroge Catlin, an artist who painted Native Americans; one depicting the Rolling Stones; and several geometric patterns---are more worthy in my view. The real test was when at night I put the book's pages to ultra-violet illumination. Despite my reservations on content, the 69 fluorescent wonders stood out and I could again appreciated the effect. Some historical background on the art is included. The book of posters certainly is unusual (how many offer actual fluorescent printing?) and recommend it as a supplement to books that present old Fillmore and Avalon Ballroom posters with their neo-Art Nouveau text and graphic approaches.

INCREDIBLY BRIGHT

THIS IS A FANTASTIC BOOK. All of the posters glow vibrantly under blacklight and I never get tired of them. I cut them out to use as actual posters, instead of just flipping through the book. Instead of buying one big blacklight piece, buy this instead. Worth the price as you get so much blacklight material!

Priest, one of Granta's Best Young British Novelists (1983 list), has not been overproductive since he made a small reputation with The Affirmation and The Glamour, published here more than a dozen years ago. His new novel (the title of which refers to the residue left after a magician's successful trick) is enthrallingly odd. In a carefully calculated period style that is remarkably akin to that of the late Robertson Davies, Priest writes of a pair of rival magicians in turn-of-the-century London. Each has a winning trick the other craves, but so arcane is the nature of these tricks, so incredibly difficult are they to perform, that they take on a peculiar life of their own?in one case involving a mysterious apparent double identity, in the other a reliance on the ferocious powers unleashed in the early experimental years of electricity. The rivalry of the two men is such that in the end, though both are ashamed of the strength of their feelings of spite and envy, it consumes them both, and affects their respective families for generations. This is a complex tale that must have been extremely difficult to tell in exactly the right sequence, while still maintaining a series of shocks to the very end. Priest has brought it off with great imagination and skill. It's only fair to say, though, that the book's very considerable narrative grip is its principal virtue. The characters and incidents have a decidedly Gothic cast, and only the restraint that marks the story's telling keeps it on the rails.

Having seen the movie,

I was surprised how unremittingly dull the book was. Diary entries put everything into some boring (and predictable) venue. And MY GOD it was slow. And boring. And predictable. And completely lacking in magic. I don't care how many awards it won.

I gave it a shot ... and wish I hadn't.

Go see the movie, which is fabulous.

If you're a fan of Simon Vance's narration as I am, you should get this audiobook. I first discovered Vance when listening to his reading of The Ludwig Conspiracy and I've been a fan ever since. If Simon Vance can't make a book interesting, it isn't worth listening to.

Focusing on first grade reading instruction, their study shows that individual reading aptitude actually has little direct relation to group reading achievement and virtually none to the coverage of reading materials once the mean aptitude of groups is taken into consideration. Individual aptitude, they argue, is rather the basis on which teachers form reading groups that are given different instructional treatment. It is these differences in group treatment, they contend, that explain substantial differences in learning curricular material.

Replete with errors but ahead of its time

The title of this book is misleading. First and foremost it is about ability grouping in the elementary grades, just one controversial aspect of how schools work. Furthermore, it is replete with methodological errors, the most damaging of which are running fairly complex manifest variable path models with, in some instances, fewer than fifty cases. And then trying to explain in substantive terms why coefficients that they expected to be statistically significant are not.

Nevertheless, for a book published in 1983, Barr and Dreeben's emphasis on the importance of aggregated contextual variables is novel, exhibiting a good deal of explanatory power. This is exactly the sort of conceptual approach one would expect from sociologists. Until recently, however, with the development of multilevel modeling, it has been difficult to find.

To their credit, Barr and Dreeben also specified a plausible mechanism for their use of group mean aptitude as a contextual variable: pace of instruction varies with group mean aptitude, and measured adchivement varies with pace of instruction.

I still have serious reservations about ability grouping and its efficacy in promoting achievement. Moreover, the obvious methodological errors in Barr and Dreeben's book are too numerous and damaging to overlook. But in one way -- use of contextual variables before their application had become commonplace -- their book is ahead of its time and shows a commitment to thinking sociologically.

Emotionally gripping!

Wow...this was a surprise from Monica McCarty. Since this novel was barely reviewed and not glowingly, I was hesitant to purchase it. I was pleasantly surprised. It had a number of unexpected twists and went in directions I didn't expect. The main characters were very multi-layered and complex....both having good and bad sides to their personalities. They each made many mistakes and paid the price for them. I liked that they were so much more than the typical hero and heroine of the average historical romance. I really felt the emotion of what they were going through and shed a few tears at their pain. Any book that can make me cry must be exceptional as it rarely happens. It tells me how invested in the characters I was and how strong the story is to draw me in so completely. I also want to mention how hot the love scenes were...scorching hot!
I would recommend this novel to those who are looking for an unusual historical romance with some raw, darker and deeper elements running through it.

My least favorite Monica Mc Carty book.

I have read most all of Mc Carty's books and, to be honest, this is my least favorite. Her writing is still good, although this book dragged in places and then skipped some storyline in an attempt to keep the book moving. It began as heartwrenching, but it never really broke through that mold. Although the main characters seem to heal at the end of the book, there is no joy in this story. I only felt their agony, mainly because they never seemed to feel anything but that emotion. Even at the end, the happiness that we should have expeienced with the characters never materializes. I found myself simply depressed. I want to come away with emotion at the end of a book, but this book seemed to evoke only one emotion in me and that was sorrow. Simply not an edifying read.

The Unthinkable

Monica grabs your attention from the very beginning and she won't let go until the very end.......leaving you wanting more. I don't know if she plans on making a series from this story, but I can only hope.

There are a couple of her characters in this story that I'd love to see developed into something more and there is one particular unsavory ass that I'd love to see his downfall.

However, the two main characters in this book are torn apart from the very beginning and their journey back is a long and arduous one. With lots of bumps in the road ahead of them, some large and some small, makes the coming together that much more poignant. With tragedy, betrayal, mistrust, and a deep unwavering love (which neither one totally understood), they finally come together again. Still not totally convinced, Genie cannot give herself fully to Fitz until she looses him.....or she thinks she has.

Beautifully written and a departure from her Highlander series, this Ton story is well worth the adventure Ms. McCarty takes you on. Highly recommend this book. Happy reading! Cheers!

Yes sir, this is the one and only book you will need for BMW. Bob is one of my favorite artist and so I wanted a complete collection. Every other book I found fell way short. There are other books with this same cover (be sure to see song list), but this particular book contains all the songs from the 4-disc album Song of Freedom and more. Well worth the extra cost and wait to get shipped from Europe.

Casual fans will probably be OK with books of smaller collection, but for those following his career since his songs were only available on 45s this is a must have.

Intense and thought provoking. Two SO Clich� words I know but that's a good way to describe this poetry collection. Atypical in its approach, Underwood has a knack for maybe leading you on a thought pattern and then sideswiping you with the next line. At times, uncomfortable, it's a collection that makes you feel... and to me, that's of the highest compliments to poetry. Although some highlights do exist, I think it's a matter of mood, mindset and what poetry you like that will ultimately decide how much you enjoy this collection. That said, the talent is there and the emotion is direct
