Good at diagnosing the problem, rougher for solutions

The first thing that strikes me about Ctrl-Alt-Del is the title. It feels a bit retro for an author who celebrates his MacBook Air to revert to this Windows metaphor for the reboot. And note that the Windows reboot does not send you in a new direction; it just returns you to where you were before it crashed.

I think, however, that Ctrl-Alt-Del may be about right here, however, because while Joel does an excellent job of showing you what's going wrong, he doesn't do as well as he might in trying to provide the tools to do something truly different after your reboot.

The first part of this book, about business and the internet age, hits a lot of solid points about where older companies totally fail to get it. The second part talks about how you need to become your own brand online and in life and it makes the case persuasively. Too many businesses don't understand that one bad Yelp review can cost you big bucks. Too many individuals don't understand that privacy settings are nice but the only key to a clean online profile is not posting stupid things or problematic photographs. That said, what is missing in this book is clear cut strategies to address the biggest threats to your or your business' online profile and, especially, to create a positive web presence instead.

When you are done with this book, you will know a lot more about what's wrong with the way businesses and people present themselves and find themselves presented online than you will about what to do about it. That said, there is one excellent idea which makes it worth the trouble of reading: In the world of the web, you do not sell. You add value and let your contributions and reputation sell you. Too many businesses think a blog is for advertising their specials and a web page is just about e-commerce. They'd never make their physical storefronts so much all about them and so little about their customers, but online they just don't get it.

If you think your web presence is just fine but you really can't explain why anyone else would want to visit your web pages, this is a great book to help you understand why you need to re-think. But if you already know that your online resume is about the people you want to hire you and your online business is supposed to be about what your customers need, not what you do, then you can skip this one.

Compelling & Indispensable Road Map to the Social Media Future

If you are looking for a road map to the post-disruption digital world, this provocative book offers one. If this new world of business feels like a foreign country, consider the author your translator. While I was reading this book I felt like I was in a different country, a new landscape, where the author acts like a wise and compelling guide. It seems like a new universe is being created. Some of the major planets have already formed - we know them by name: Google, Apple, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, and YouTube which deal with content and connection. We are travelers - mobile - and consumers and makers of content.

As this new digital universe is forming, we're in a kind of 'purgatory' says author, Mitch Joel. We're waiting for the cosmic dust to settle, to get the lay of the land and see where we fit in the new "promised land". If we don't want to be dinosaurs (I'm mixing metaphors here), Joel suggests it's not too early to identify and act upon the five key converging forces that are already in play in the field of marketing and communication. He describes a number of actions you can take to utilize these to your company's benefit. Does anyone think these dynamics aren't here to stay? These five dynamics are in brief:

#1 - Direct relationships with consumers - own a strong and direct relationship with your consumers. It's not about social media as in having customers like you on Facebook. Consumers are more social via media, so companies have to be social with them. The author details steps how to do this.

#2 - Utility - provide something consumers need through your marketing. Think useful not sexy marketing. Joel explains just what this kind of marketing is.

#3 - Active media - create media that touches consumers and creates interaction; don't just broadcast or 'spray and pray' messages.

#4 - Sex with data - mine data to determine what it takes to acquire customers and keep them. Joel quotes Google when they say, "In God We Trust...everyone else must bring data." "The math is smart," says my son's professor in his PhD economics program. It leads you to discoveries and action.

#5 - One Screen - it's about the screen that is currently in front of your consumer at that moment. Very likely it's increasingly a mobile screen.

This book has very practical actions you can take in your business and work to align yourself with these forces and make them work for you and your company. By understanding them, it provides a mindset and sense of direction on where to go and what to do to reboot your company. But it's not only companies which need to reboot, Joel suggests, so do individuals. In the second half of the book, he outlines seven ways individuals need to think to thrive in this new world. He then describes what individuals can to do to accomplish these.

One of the seven ways to reboot ourselves, which Joel describes, is to "embrace the next". Joel lists trends he sees on the horizon we will want to prepare to respond to.

Some of the author's insights which struck me - you'll enjoy finding your own:

* "People confuse what makes something social. The commonly held misperception is that social media is all about the conversation. I do not believe that to be true. For social to be social, it has to be something that people can both easily find and share."

* "The true marketing imperative is to tell a great brand narrative. It's a cohesive story that takes place over time and in different channels."

* "Few traditional career tactics train us for an era where the most important skill is the ability to acquire new skills."

* "...take that opportunity to help the prospect fall back in love with the business they're in."

" *Be brilliant, be brief, be gone." - words displayed in his colleague's office

This book is brimming with actionable ideas, examples and suggestions. When Google wanted to explain online marketing to the top brands in the world they called in Mitch Joel to Googleplex. You will understand why. His narrative is bracing, deep, with insights accompanied by practical recommendations. He walks his talk as president of a digital marketing company, and is one of iMedia's 25 Internet Marketing Leaders and Innovators in the world. One of the best books I've read recently - am recommending it to many.

Like Taking a Shower in a Firehose

I have no doubt that Mitch Joel knows a lot. But the problem is, I can't understand half of what he writes. This book is chock-full of info, statistics, apparent insights and anecdotes, but it lacks a cohesive structure and a good editor.

Joel needed someone to slow down his thinking and writing enough to make him connect the dots. I have a master's degree from a top-notch university, I'm an online business owner, and I've read a lot of marketing books so I'm not unintelligent or uninformed. But the way he tossed factoids around was making me dizzy -- as was the constant use of parenthetical statements, a dead giveaway that his thought structure needs some work.

I would read a page and be somewhat along for the ride, taking in the statistics and anecdotes, but then suddenly the train would jump the tracks or the chapter would end or Joel would say something like, "Amazing, right?" And I'm like, "Umm, amazed by WHAT? What's the takeaway? What am I supposed to do with this barrage of information?"

I think there are some gems hidden in here, but I really am not inclined enough to search for them.

They say that great minds think alike, and Michael has a great mind. I have known him for years, and every piece of advice he's ever given me is brilliant. His new book is not like most of what you'll find in the finance section. Like our mentor Benjamin Graham, this is intelligent investing, and an encompassing assessment of modern stock market psychology. I especially liked the paragraph in the opening chapter with the header: "Businesses are not static". So many investors today forget that the future is both something that exists, and is always changing.

The rest of the book is also excellent. He draws a clear distinction between when to buy and when to sell, and how to even find good opportunities in the first place. Most importantly, he covers how to both ignore and exploit the short-term foolishness that we encounter on a daily basis in the stock market. The reading is focused and easy to digest, and I recommend it whole-heartedly.

which is a good introduction or reminder

Just finished this book. It contains a lot of decent advice, in a general sense, to encourage long term investing. There are a lot of biographical stories that profile many long term (forever) investors, which is a good introduction or reminder, for those who knew about them already. The bad is that the advice is sort of overly broad, as nobody is truly a "forever" investor. Eventually, we die. We have a couple of decades, maybe forty or fifty years at most, realistically, in which to invest. While everyone would love to have started at age 18, and held until age 70, that just doesn't happen. The other problem is that the book encourages long term holding if you bought the right stock, and hold through periods of underperformance, since they are often a part of any long term strategy. However, if the stock doesn't perform well over the long term, don't buy it. (With apologies to Will Rogers.) Don't chase short term profits at the expense of long term success. That is the bottom line. The author seems to have his head and heart in the right place, by all accounts, but don't expect another Security Analysis or Intelligent Investor here.

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in reading an in-depth explanation of the investing concept “Forever Investing”, where earning above market returns is best achieved by purchasing outstanding businesses, with exceptional management and the intention of owning them forever.

While the Forever Investing approach to money management may not be suitable for everyone, as described in Chapter 1, those with a long-term time horizon, ability to endure the volatility of price fluctuations and invest within their “circle of competence” will best succeed utilizing the Forever Investing approach. It is clear that history’s most successful investors utilized the Forever Investing concept as explained through stories of Rockefeller, Carnegie, Mellon brothers, Warren Buffett, Phil Fisher, Ben Graham, Michael Steinhardt, Carl Icahn, Koch brothers and others.

The book dives into what makes up a Forever Investment. It describes both quantitative and qualitative aspects of a great business with a durable competitive advantage, importance of management and what to consider when valuing a business. It also touches on how Forever Investing applies to portfolio management, such as when to buy, diversification or concentration, risk management, and when to sell a business.

I think the concept of Forever Investing provides a great contribution to the value investing school of thought and a refreshing perspective on how to approach investing compared to the ever-shorter outlook on corporate performance so common to Wall Street analysts and other institutional investors. I love the line in the book, “Forever Investors think of their investment portfolios as holding companies or conglomerates, they are the purest definition of investors, with day traders being the most impure and speculative. Forever Investors strictly adhere to the famous line from Benjamin Graham: ‘Investing is most intelligent when it is most businesslike’”. After reading this book I’m convinced that the best approach to achieving above market returns is through Forever Investing.

Ok, I realize this is very old, outdated, and Koontz' first major publication. It was a quick and easy read, and very predictable yet still enjoyable enough. I am currently on a mission to read all of Koontz' works. I just read Demon Seed,and now Shattered. I am reading them all in order. Although I should have saved Demon Seed for when it was updated. Which is why I am leaving Winter Moon and Icebound for their revised dates and moving on to Night Chills next.

Solid, but Very Dated Thriller

I remember reading "Shattered" ages ago, and really enjoying it. Seeing as how it clocks in at just over 200 pages, I recently picked it up again to pass the time on a lazy Sunday. The good news is that the base story of "Shattered" is still a gripping thriller. A man begins a cross-country drive from Philadelphia to San Francisco in order to make a fresh start in a new job with his new wife. Tagging along for the ride is the man's new "younger brother" through marriage. It's a chance for the two men to bond, get to know each other and prepare themselves for the momentus changes coming their way. Unfortunately, they've nabbed the attention of homicidal maniac who plans to waylay and murder them somewhere along their long journey.
It's a fun story, and as stated it's just barely over 200 pages, meaning you could retire the entire thing in half a day, or spread it out over two lunch hours. The story is reminicent of the films "Duel" and "Joy Ride". There is lots of action, and Koontz does a great job of ratcheting up the suspense as the story unfolds.
The only drawback to "Shattered", which first hit bookshelves in 1973, is that it is terribly dated. Quite a bit of the novel deals with the protagonist running into prejudice against "hippies". References to Vietnam and Charles Whitman's sniper shootings, as well as Charlie Manson and Richard Speck as recent events also tie the novel to a certain time in American history, which is now three decades past. The police in the story discuss the "freaks" tearing apart the moral fabric of the country seems pretty antiquated now as well.
I still recommend this novel, but would love to see Koontz update this story as he has done with "Twilight Eyes".

First of all, if you want a book you can read fast this is your book. It's a very short novel, one of Koont's first writings (which you can immediately tell by repeated references to the looks of the main characters, and the concept people, specially those in law enforcement, have of them). I did like the fast read and to tell the truth, I was glad to be able to read the novel after learning about it a few years ago, because I found the synopsis rather interesting.
The problem with this book however is that it leaves many loose ends and as fast as it goes it really avoids a deeper approach to the story. Many readers are reminded of Duel, I was also remimded of the movie Joyride, but to tell the truth we never get a real nailbiting, mind shredding chase on the highway itself, except when the van catches up with our heros in a deserted road. The book is broken down in six parts, one for each of six days (monday, tuesday...), but you start reading that they get a glimpse of the van on tuesday morning, they get scared about it, lose it, and on the next page it's already tuesday night.
Tension is better built on the second part of the book, specially towards the end but then the ending is too abrupt. As in Whispers this book has no epilogue, but you start feeling shoved to the exit.
One of the things I didn't like, and which I realized a little while after finishing the book, was the waste of time with the cop and the forensics technician. I remember a scene in the book when the cop is sitting at a restaurant (or a cafe, something along those lines) and the technician approches him all of a sudden and starts inquiring about the case. I had this image of the worried cop and the Gil Grissom-like tech coming up with a mindblowing way of how to catch the maniac, which would lead to a great climax, but then all of a sudden we never hear from them again. They are completely forgotten, so I don't really know why they were given the importance they were given in the first place.
Not the best Koontz I've read but it keeps you entertained for a while. If instead you wanna try a more interesting short novel by Koontz I would recommend The Voice of the Night.
